The numbers in the diagram indicate how many times the given formula counts that particular portion of the Venn Diagram. In the first picture, for example, an element in the intersection of A, B, and C will be counted 3 times. Each term of the inclusion-exclusion formula gradually refines these numbers until each portion of the Venn Diagram is counted exactly once.

This math image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.
It is recommended to name the SVG file “Inclusion-exclusion-3sets.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.
