Illustration Description

Figure 292 -- Eddy currents in a solid armature

Eddy currents always occur when a solid metallic mass is rotated in a magnetic field, because the outer portion of the metal cuts more lines of force than the inner portion, hence the induced electromotive force not being uniform, tends to set up currents between the points of greatest and least potential. Eddy currents consume a considerable amount of energy and often occasional harmful rise in temperature.

Upload Notes

This technology image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.

It is recommended to name the SVG file “Hawkins Electrical Guide - Figure 292 - Eddy currents in a solid armature.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.
