photo of Haarlemmerhout, oldest public park in the Netherlands. Since the middle ages open to the public, it wasn't designed as a park for recreational use until 1756, when the landscape designer Jan van Vorel introduced the French garden system of straight lines and star-shaped woods, still to be found in the lines of the park today.
