Notes In the painting, Lü is shown as a mediating Taoist mystic. The green sword-holding figure behind him is the Willow Deity, one of Lü's disciples. It was a tree that the master had animated and which from then on served him faithfully. Behind Lu stands a large alcohol pot, the so-called jiu'ou, and in front of him a vessel for heating jigs with alcohol. The piece is a good example of figural painting unconnected with the wenren style, and instead borrowing directly from the tradition of the Song and Yuan dynasties. The artist uses delicate shades of just a couple of colours, creating the impression of domination of brush technique.
