Kühlewindt absolvierte eine Lehre als Photograph in Leipzig und Wien, unterhielt ab 1893 ein eigenes Atelier in Nakel/Netze & in Königsberg ab 1899.

Im Ersten Weltkrieg fertigte Kühlewindt als "Hofphotograph" Manöver- und Kriegsbilder für die Oberste Heeresleitung, insbesondere vom östlichen Kriegsschauplatz.

Kühlewindt starb am 30. Januar 1945 in Bad Frankenhausen / Thüringen.
