whoever posted the pic originally said it was shot on April 1, 2004, during anti-regionalization protests

They seem to be carrying:

a FAMAS (most probably for throwing tear gas grenades; they apparently hadn't received Cougar grenade launchers)
bulletproof vests
a shield
gas masks
a BPDPL (Bâton de Protection à Double Poignée Latérale) or BPPL (bâton de protection à poignée latérale) ??? - the long stick

IndyMedia Paris has a prominently displayed link to the GFDL (see at bottom), and besides, a text saying, in French:

Which means:

"The documents on the site [...] and, without contrary indication: are the property of their author, may be freely copied and broadcast by anybody, and not broadcast for commercial purposes."

Since it is quite unclear what they meant by it, I concluded the content could be used under GFDL.
