Summary

Description
Frontispiece for Le théâtre de la foire by Le Sage and D'Orneval. The caption reads: "The Muse of Comedy [Thalia] brings together Poetry, Music, and Dance to form little entertainments under the name of Opéra Comique." On the balcony above the muses can be seen the commedia dell'arte stock characters Pierrot (leaning over the railing with his hat off), Harlequin (in characteristic motley costume and his leg raised), and other players. Scaramouche gestures toward a banner depicting a rope dancer and below him, an acrobat in a back bend.
