Description
NASA's WB-57 aircraft captured thermal images of the SpaceX Falcon 9 Flight 13 rocket on its descent after it launched in September 2014 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The data from these thermal images may provide critical engineering information for future missions to the surface of Mars.

The 21 September 2014 night launch occurred at 1:52 am local time, and the first images shown in the video occur approximately 3 minutes after launch.

Seven discrete events are shown in the video:

  • post stage separation, with the first stage in the second stage plume
  • first stage maneuvers out of the second stage plume
  • first stage coasting near peak altitude of approximately 140 kilometers (87 mi)
  • first stage boost back burn to limit downrange translation
  • first stage prepares for the reentry burn
  • first stage begin reentry burn at approximately 70 kilometers (43 mi) altitude
Note: this is the "powered flight through the Mars-relevant retropropulsion regime" that was stated to be of the greatest interest to the NASA researchers who were thermal imaging SpaceX' controlled-descent test on the CRS-4 flight.

Thermal imaging data gathered by NASA WB-57 aircraft flying at 15,000 metres (50,000 ft), using a telescopic Mid-Wave Infrared (MWIR) sensor. The display is color enhanced, and played back at a 10 Hz rate; color scale is MWIR sensor counts.

NASA video was produced by the Space Technology Mission Directorate, Game Changing Development Program, in cooperation with SpaceX. SpaceX provided the trajectory coordinates that NASA used to have the camera follow the ascent and subsequent descent and all attitude-control and retropropulsion events, and SpaceX is funding the technology development effort to build reusable rocket technology which includes this particular over-ocean controlled-descent test.
