Article

F.E.A.R.

Portion used

The entire screenshot: because the image is taken from the game, the entire image is needed to identify the product, properly convey the meaning and branding intended, and avoid tarnishing or misrepresenting the image.

Low resolution?

The copy is of sufficient resolution for commentary and identification but lower resolution than the original screenshot. Copies made from it will be of inferior quality, unsuitable as artwork on pirate versions or other uses that would compete with the commercial purpose of the original artwork.

Purpose of use

Other. The image is used for identification in the context of critical commentary of the work for which it serves as screenshot. It makes a significant contribution to the user's understanding of the article, which could not practically be conveyed by words alone. It is used to illustrate some aspects of game as discussed in the article. The image from the PC version of the game, shows the use of slow-motion (referred to in-game as "reflex time", a game mechanic which slows down the game world considerably, whilst still allowing the player to react at normal speed. One of the aspects of using this ability is that the screen blurs and colours become dsistored, as seen in the image. We can also see the bullet trails, another visually important element. The image highlights these aspects in a way the article text itself could not describe as intricately, and thus enhance the reader's understanding of the prose. Use for this purpose does not compete with the purposes of the original artwork, namely the creator providing graphic design services to relevant concerns and video game marketing to the public.

Replaceable?

As a screenshot, the image is not replaceable by free content; any other image that shows the packaging of the item in question would also be copyrighted, and any version that is not true to the original would be inadequate for identification or commentary.

Other information

Use of the screenshot in the article complies with Wikipedia non-free content policy and fair use under United States copyright law as described above.
