File:Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad open observation car 1917.JPG

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Original file(1,320 × 740 pixels, file size: 204 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

Summary

Description Postcard photo of the open observation cars operated by the Denver and Rio Grande railroad through the Royal Gorge and also through the Black Canon of the Gunnison circa 1917. Note that unlike some lines who operated the open observation cars for their "tourist class" passengers while "first class" riders could use the enclosed observation car, the Rio Grande termed this an "extra" and charged a quarter per person to ride in the open car.

  • Note there are cancellation marks on the right side of the card. My thought is that they may not be able to be removed without altering it considerably. This is the first example I've seen of the D&RGW's offering the cars on more than their Royal Gorge line and also that it was considered an extra instead of a less luxurious way to see the scenery as was the case with other railroads. I believe this information is important enough to have the card stand "as is" because it offers new to us information on the D&RGW in earlier times. If another identical card is located, I will replace the flawed one.
