Suomi: Evankelis-luterilaisen kirkon vaakunoista annetun lain (785/1986, kumottu 250/2012) 2. §:n mukaan:
  • Kirkon vaakunan hyväksyy ja vahvistaa kirkkohallitus.
  • Hiippakunnan vaakunan hyväksyy tuomiokapituli. Päätös on alistettava kirkkohallituksen vahvistettavaksi.

Kirkkolain (1054/1993, muutettu 249/2012) 25. luvun 18. §:n mukaan:

  • Kirkon vaakunan hyväksyy kirkkohallitus.
  • Hiippakunnan ja piispan vaakunan hyväksyy tuomiokapituli. Päätös on alistettava kirkkohallituksen vahvistettavaksi.
  • Seurakunnan vaakunan hyväksyy kirkkovaltuusto tai seurakuntaneuvosto.Päätös on alistettava tuomiokapitulin vahvistettavaksi.
Koska evankelisluterilaisella kirkolla on julkisoikeudellinen asema, tekijänoikeuslain 9. §:n 1. momentin 4. kohta ("tekijänoikeutta ei ole - - viranomaisen tai muun julkisen toimielimen päätöksiin ja lausumiin - -") koskee myös kirkkohallituksen, tuomiokapitulin, kirkkovaltuuston ja seurakuntaneuvoston päätöksiä. Tämän vuoksi evankelisluterilaisen kirkon, hiippakunnan, piispan tai seurakunnan vaakunaan ei ole tekijänoikeutta.
