Notes Calisher and Terry breech loading carbine, circa 1852 As issued to NZ Armed Constabulary previous label copy- Calisher and Terry carbine, 1850 The Calisher and Terry carbine was issued to the New Zealand Armed Constabulary, in the 1860s. The .30 bore Terry patent was issued in London in 1852 but the weapon was not long-lived for it was quickly superseded by the superior Snider rifle. Notes- a) This weapon was issued in New South Wales, but it is possible that F-567 is a Forest Rangers issue number. Donor, WH Ross, author of Te Kooti Rikirangi Te Turuki, was also a nephew of Captain G Ross who was killed at Turuturu Mokai in 1868. b) “With the outbreak of the War in 1860 the NZ Colonial Government and Provincial Governments looked to buy modern firearms from NSW and Victoria. On 26 July 1860 NSW ordered 150 Terry Carbines at 135 shillings each and a small over supply was accepted the total received was 164 Carbines. It is possible that this weapon is one of the NSW carbines which was on sold to NZ." Information from John Osborne, 2010.
