File:Canal tunnel under Sydney Road - geograph.org.uk - 2171080.jpg

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Original file(2,000 × 1,500 pixels, file size: 806 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

This is a photo of listed building number 1395966.

Summary

Description
Which came first? The canal was constructed through Sydney Gardens between 1800 and 1810, and Pevsner describes Cleveland House, which is over the tunnel, as being early 19C. I should think that the canal was made in a cutting and covered over, with a tunnel portal at each end, and the house built on beams over an arch. I now wish I had walked through to inspect the inside of the tunnel.
