![Statue of Pierre Cambronne, general of the Garde Impériale at Waterloo (sculpture by Jean Debay, 1848). He is famous for having replied to the British general Colville (according to the legend): La Garde meurt et ne se rend pas ! (the Garde dies and does not surrender). Actually, he didn't die and did surrender, but the sentence is still engraved on the pedestal of its statue in Nantes, its natal city. When Colville insisted, Cambronne is known to have answered Merde !, the interjection being then known as the Word of Cambronne. He always denied having said any of that.](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/13/Cambronne_-_buste.jpg/800px-Cambronne_-_buste.jpg)
