Nederlands: Repronegatief. Het idee om in Deli tabak te verbouwen was veel ouder dan de Europese plantages die er vanaf de jaren '60 van de 19e eeuw opgericht werden. De Europese tabaksplanters hadden gezien hoe goed de tabak erbij stond die de Bataks verbouwden. Tabak was geen gewas dat oorspronkelijk in de Archipel voorkwam. Net als maïs kwam het uit Amerika. De bevolkingstabak in de Bataklanden werd allen voor eigen gebruik en voor de lokale markt verbouwd. In sommige streken van Sumatra, zoals de hoger gelegen delen van de Padangse Bovenlanden, Benkoelen en Palembang, werd er door de lokale bevolking tabak voor de export verbouwd. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
