Junkers Ju 52 der I./KG.z.b.V. 1 mit dem Gruppenemblem "der Springer". Die rechte Ju 52 mit dem Kennzeichen 1Z + AA ist die Maschine des Geschwaderkommodores des KG.z.b.V. 1 (Kampfgeschwader zur besonderen Verwendung 1) Oberst Fritz Morzik. Die Transportflugzeuge haben vermutlich während der Landung mit Gebirgsjägern an Bord auf ungeigneter Landestelle "Bruch gemacht". Es ist nicht bekannt, ob sich Oberst Morzik bei diesem Einsatz an Bord seines Flugzeuges befunden hatte. NACA-Hauben und Townend-Ringe, sowie die Seitenruder der Ju 52 waren für das Luftlandeunternehmen "Merkur" auf Kreta in auffällig gelber Markierungsfarbe gespritzt worden, um die Verwechslungsgefahr durch die eigene Flugabwehr (Flak) mit gegnerischen, vorw. britischen Flugzeugen zu minimieren.
