Summary

Description
Watercolour image by Robert Westall, painted in 1848, of Battersea Fields in London, United Kingdom.

This view is from Pavilion Terrace (per OS map), on the north side of Battersea New Town. The Royal Hospital Chelsea and (in the foreground) Battersea Pumping Station (which was built eight years previously in 1840) are both visible. This was painted in the early years of railway development, but the only railway through Battersea at the time was the LSWR line to Vauxhall and Waterloo, which lay behind the artist. Later, after the area became extensively urbanised, Battersea Power Station was built where the ponds are.

The date and artist are known, however the original title of the painting is uncertain.

Robert Westall is known to have exhibited a painting 'London from Pavilion Place, Battersea Fields' - possibly this painting - at the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1849.

The original painting is part of the collection of the Museum of London, and this faithful photograph of the original painting (of which there are several similar versions online) is believed to have also been taken by the Museum of London.

Date of original creation is approximate (only the year is known). Precise year of death of Robert Westall could not be readily ascertained, however given date of creation the PD-Art tag clearly applies for any reasonable age of death.
