Description
The off-side of Arriva London special purposes fleet Routemaster bus RM2217 (reg. CUV 217C), operating London Buses route 159 on the last day of non-heritage Routemaster operation in London. As part of the special fleet, RM2217 was chosen to operate the official last Routemaster journey on the day, preceeded by two duplicates, operated by red RM5 and gold RM6 also drawn from the special fleet. This last service was to be a run from Marble Arch to Streatham Hill, Telford Avenue, a short working of route 159 terminating at the last stop before Arriva's Brixton bus garage, rather than the usual terminus of Streatham Station. With RM5 and then RM6 leaving a few minutes ahead of it, RM2217 was due to leave at 12.10. It's pictured here operating the last service, at the bottom of Haymarket in Westminster, heading south. Due to the public interest in the event, the journey had a police motorcycle escort to keep the bus moving and the road clear. They're just visible in this shot.
