Summary

Description

Algerine Swamp Natural Area sign along Gamble Run Road, Lycoming County–Tioga County line, within the Algerine Swamp Natural Area of Tiadaghton State Forest.

Located just west of Pine Creek Gorge, the 84-acre natural area protects a high-elevation boreal conifer bog at the headwaters of Red Run, a mountain stream. Balsam fir, black spruce, red pine, and tamarack—northern-latitude conifers rarely found growing naturally in Pennsylvania—are abundant here, along with the usual hemlock and white pine.

To my knowledge, no trails traverse the bog. The few footpaths that enter the bog from Gamble Run Road quickly vanish. I'll return to explore the bog's wetter sections after I map out a safe bushwhacking route. My brief exploration of the coniferous forest—deep, dark, and confining—convinced me of how easily lost one might become in this place. I'll also make time to explore the open wetlands of the nearby Reynolds Spring Natural Area.
