Han var generalfälttygmästare i tsar Peter den stores armé och deltog på den ryska sidan i slaget vid Narva år 1700. Där blev han tillfångatagen av de svenska styrkorna och tillbringade åren 1701-1711 som krigsfånge i Sverige.
