Description
Photograph taken at Wilkes Station by Lieutenant Andrew Stanner, 17th Construction Squadron (Royal Australian Engineers) on Voyage 8 of the 1989/88 resupply season ANARE. Photograph shows a partially destroyed explosive satchel used for ice acoustic analysis. A large number of similar satchels were distributed over an area estimated at 1000m square after a prior failed attempt to destroy old explosives.

Photograph was taken while on a reconnaissance conducted over the period 28 Feb to 25 Mar 1988. The reconnaissance indicated that the volume of waste at Wilkes Base at the time was approximately:

  • POL (up to 100,000 litres, mainly diesel fuel)
  • approximately 300 assorted gas cylinders
  • approximately 2 tonnes of caustic soda
  • approximately 2 tonnes of ferrous silicate
  • a quantity of explosives
