Summary

Description
Vasudhārā is the bodhisattva of wealth, prosperity, and abundance in Buddhism.

The Vasudhāra dhāraṇī is a Buddhist text where the Buddha teaches the merchant Sucandra, a lay person who has lost all his wealth. The recitation helps him regain his material wealth. The dharani embedded in this Buddhist text enumerates the benefits and ritual instructions on how to use the text for prosperity.

This palm-leaf manuscript is dated to 1123 CE and is one of the oldest known manuscripts of the Vasudhara dharani. It is evidence of ritualism and worship in esoteric Buddhism traditions.

Cecil Bendall purchased this manuscript in February 1898–9 in Nepal. The manuscript is now preserved as MS Or.142.1 at the Cambridge University LIbrary.

Language: Sanskrit

Script: Pala
