Summary

Description
The death and attainment of final Nirvana of Ānanda, the attendant of the Buddha and one of the patriarchs of the Buddhist teaching. Originally from Sikri, India. Sculpted in Greco-Buddhist style, the bas-relief depicts the death of Ānanda which took place in meditation posture [pictured at the right]. At the left, we can see half of the skeleton of Ānanda, which King Ajātasattu (Sanskrit:Ajātaśatrū) is worshiping. The other half of the skeleton was given to the Licchavi clan, but this is probably depicted in the right part of the relief, which has not survived.
