The Ferrari SF21 is a Formula One racing car designed and constructed by Scuderia Ferrari to compete during the 2021 Formula One World Championship. The car is driven by Carlos Sainz, Jr. and Charles Leclerc.[1] The car made its competitive debut at the 2021 Bahrain Grand Prix.


The SF21 was designed as an evolution of its predecessor the SF1000.

Head of chassis Enrico Cardile says that the aerodynamics on the SF21 have undergone a “radical” revision with two goals in mind given the new 2021 rules that cut downforce around the car's floor and rear wheels. It seems, as a result, that the team's development tokens have been spent on the transmission and rear suspension.

“Aerodynamics was one of the areas affected by the regulation changes aimed at reducing the ability to generate vertical load, in order not to put too great a strain on the tyres,” said Cardile. “That’s why, as we began developing the car’s aerodynamics, we set ourselves two goals: recovering more aerodynamic downforce than was lost through the regulations and reducing drag. “We opted for the rear end, designing a new gearbox and new suspension system. This, in addition to the efforts of our power unit colleagues has led to a much tighter rear end."[2]

The entire front section of the car has undergone refinements, with the new front-wing returning to a greater 2019-style out wash effect. It also features a new lateral drift which is inspired by the Mercedes-Aston Martin solutions, both for the shape of the bulkhead in the outermost edge, and in the “foot curb” area with a small flow diverter in front of the tyre. There is also a new cape, which is the flow diverter located behind the nose, which helps to manage the flow of air that passes through the lower part of the frame. Also noteworthy are the “horns” placed in the front part of the frame, similar to those on the Alfa Romeo with four separate flow diverters.[3]

Development of the car ended after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as Ferrari switched their attention to the car's successor.[4]

Power unit

Addressing the power deficit of their 2020 contender, Mattia Binotto stated that "the [new] engine is running well on the dyno" and that its performance had progressed "significantly" compared to 2020. He also explained that 2021 will be a "transition" year in preparation for 2022 and that the SF1000's high aerodynamic drag is a point of focus for development.[5]
