"Feels Like Heaven" is a song by British dance music band Urban Cookie Collective, released on 1 November 1993 by Pulse 8 as the second single from their debut album, High on a Happy Vibe (1994). As the follow-up to "The Key the Secret", it was both written and produced by Rohan Heath, and peaked at number five on the UK Singles Chart, staying in the chart for nine consecutive weeks. The vocals were by Diane Charlemagne, who had provided the vocal for the band's previous hit and their subsequent singles.[2] Its accompanying music video was directed by British director Lindy Heymann,[3] featuring the band performing on the beach.
Critical reception
Andy Beevers from Music Week gave "Feels Like Heaven" five out of five. He wrote, "The follow-up to "The Key the Secret" unsurprisingly sticks to pretty much the same infectious upbeat house formula. It should not have much trouble following its predecessor into the Top 40, although it may not reach the same dizzy heights."[4] The Record Mirror Dance Update named it a "bright and catchy sequel".[5] Alex Kadis from Smash Hits gave the song two out of five, viewing it as "a sure-fire hit to follow their No 2 triumph". She also noted its "uplifting vocals and prerequisite soaring backbeat".[6] Another Smash Hits editor, Mark Frith, complimented it as a "corking" single.[7]
Chart performance
"Feels Like Heaven" was successful on the charts in Europe, Canada and Australia. In Europe, it entered the top 10 in Belgium,[8] Ireland,[9] the Netherlands,[9] and Switzerland,[10] peaking at number nine in all four countries. The song was also a top-10 hit in the United Kingdom, as well as on MTV's European Top 20, where it reached number three. In the UK, the single peaked at number five in its second week at the UK Singles Chart, on 14 November 1993, and spent a total of nine weeks within the chart.[11][12] On the Music Week Dance Singles chart, it was even more successful, reaching number three,[13] while peaking at number 22 on the UK Record Mirror Club Chart.[14] Additionally, it was a top-20 hit in Austria (11), Denmark, Finland (13), Germany (12) and Sweden (17). On the Eurochart Hot 100, "Feels Like Heaven" peaked at number 17 on 15 January 1994,[15] after debuting at number 37 in November 1993, when it charted in the UK.[16] On the European Dance Radio Chart, it rose to number one for three weeks.[17] In North America, "Feels Like Heaven" peaked at number four on the RPM Dance/Urban chart in Canada, while in Oceania, it peaked at numbers ten and 47 in Australia and New Zealand, respectively.
