"Fantasize" is an unreleased song by American singer Ariana Grande written and recorded in August of 2021. The song was composed by Grande, Max Martin, and Savan Kotecha for an unreleased comedy sketch. The song was fully leaked in June 2023 and went viral on TikTok.

Grande then recorded "The Boy Is Mine" which contained elements of "Fantasize" in light of the song going viral for her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine. The song was released as a single on June 7, 2024.[1][2]

Background and composition

"Fantasize" was written by Grande and featured production by Max Martin and Savan Kotecha. The track is a mid-tempo, 90s inspired pop-R&B song that Grande described as "parody of a nineties girl group".[1][3] The song, originally titled, "90s idea number 3 2.1", leaked in three demo versions on June 25, 2023[4], the third receiving the most attention.[5] Grande stated that the song was meant for an unreleased television series that was produced by Seth McFarlane.[6]

A leak of the third demo was posted to Spotify by user "Adriana Venti" on August 19, 2023 as "But Just Before I Go, There's Something You Should Know" and garnered over 1.2 million streams by September 4, 2023 debuting at #200 on the Philippines' Spotify Daily Top Songs. The user was allegedly fined $10,000 and ordered to do over 48 hours of community service.[7][8][9]

Reception

Fans described the song as their "new obsession" and said it's throwback sound "scratched their brains".[10] It gained track and went viral on TikTok, soundtracking 130,000 videos by August 2023.[11]

Grande was not happy with the leak, and urged people to stop spreading leaks.[12] Many said that Grande should release the song due to it's 90's sound, however it was never released but she had plans to reinvent it for her next album. She did end up reinventing it, sampling the 1998 Brandy and Monica hit "The Boy Is Mine" for the song of the same name for her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine. Commenting on the leaked song's huge success she jokingly remarked "Thank you so much. I’ll see you in jail. Literally."[13]
