Erythroxylum (Erythroxylon) is a genus of tropical flowering plants in the family Erythroxylaceae. Many of the approximately 200 species contain the tropane alkaloid cocaine,[1][2] and two of the species within this genus, Erythroxylum coca and Erythroxylum novogranatense, both native to South America, are the main commercial source of cocaine and of the mild stimulant coca tea.[3] Another species, Erythroxylum vaccinifolium (also known as catuaba) is used as an aphrodisiac in Brazilian drinks and herbal medicine.

Erythroxylum species are food sources for the larvae of some butterflies and moths, including several Morpho species and Dalcera abrasa, which has been recorded on E. deciduum, and the species of Agrias.

Transcription

Its origin is in South America, such as Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Argentina North. Shrub, 1-2 m woody stems. It is one of the world's most controlled plants. Whole leaves, petiolate, with an intense green colour. Divided into 4 areas and central nerve longitudinal. The flowers are tiny and white with 10 soldierís stamens. Gynaecium tricarpelar, and only 1 carpel matures. Its fruit is a red drupe. It has an ovoid shape and measures about one cm. The cultivation is very restricted due to side effects. Leaves extract the best-known local cocaine. Anesthetic alkaloid, because of a high addiction risk its use is reduced to eye surgery. By chewing it avoids the feeling of hunger and fatigue. In the traditional Andean culture it was a very used masticatory by the people. It is found in salt and crystals. The salt is consumed by inhalation or intravenous route. Its constant use is by nasal inhalation (sniffing) It is consumed because it increases the psyche and the working muscle along with auditory visual disturbances, hypersensitivity, intellectual difficulties, etc. The cocaine is one of the drug which presents a higher impact.
