List of episodes

The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.[1]

The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.

The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, is set to consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote at least four of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023, with production moving from Roath Lock Studios to Bad Wolf's Wolf Studios.

Nineteen years ago, a mysterious hooded woman abandons her baby outside a church. In the present day, the foundling – Ruby Sunday – is trying to find her birth parents using a DNA test, to no avail. After an interview with Davina McCall, Ruby finds herself repeatedly experiencing unnatural bad luck and has several encounters with the Fifteenth Doctor. After her adoptive mother, Carla, fosters another baby, Ruby witnesses goblins kidnap the baby and boards their flying ship in an attempt to save her, encountering the Doctor once again. Held captive by the goblins, the Doctor reveals the goblins have manipulated time to cause Ruby’s bad luck and feed on coincidence – namely Ruby and the baby sharing a birthday on Christmas Eve. The Doctor and Ruby save the baby from being eaten by the goblins and return her home to Carla. However, coincidences binding the Doctor and Ruby together lead to the goblins travelling back in time and eating Ruby as a baby. The Doctor uses the TARDIS to travel back nineteen years and save Ruby as a baby, destroying the goblins and their ship in the process. Returning to the present day, the Doctor is reunited with Ruby but goes to leave in the TARDIS. However, Ruby deduces the Doctor is a time traveller and decides to accompany him.

Casting

Ncuti Gatwa (2019) appears in his first series as the Fifteenth Doctor.

In July 2021, Jodie Whittaker announced her intention to leave the programme as the Thirteenth Doctor following the thirteenth series and three associated specials, to air by 2022.[6] Mandip Gill and John Bishop, who portrayed Yasmin Khan and Dan Lewis, later stated that they were unsure if they would continue starring following the 2022 specials, but Gill confirmed her departure from the show on 3 May 2022.[7] Davies confirmed that auditions for the fourteenth series would begin in late 2021.[8]

On 8 May 2022, Ncuti Gatwa was announced as Jodie Whittaker's successor as the programme's lead, and many reports, including that of the BBC itself, stated he would play the Fourteenth Doctor and that Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor would regenerate into an incarnation portrayed by Gatwa.[9][10] Casting director Andy Pryor assisted in the casting of Gatwa.[11] Upon Whittaker's final appearance as the character, she instead regenerated into a form seemingly identical to the Tenth Doctor. This character, portrayed by David Tennant, was confirmed to be the Fourteenth Doctor, with later clarification that Gatwa would actually portray the Fifteenth Doctor.[12] Auditions for the next companion took place on 24 September 2022.[13] On 18 November 2022, during Children in Need, Millie Gibson was announced as the new companion Ruby Sunday.[14]

On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series.[15] On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday.[16] On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series.[17] On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series.[18] On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma (who previously portrayed Suzie Costello in Torchwood) would join the series to play The Duchess.[19] On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series.[20] On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris.[21] Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.[22] On 25 December 2023, the BBC revealed that Yasmin Finney will reprise her role as Rose Noble in the series.[23]

Production

Development

In May 2017, it was announced that due to the terms of a deal between BBC Worldwide and SMG Pictures in China, the company has first right of refusal on the purchase for the Chinese market of future series of the programme until and including Series 15.[24][25] In October 2019, a deal was made between HBO Max and BBC for an additional two series of Doctor Who, including the thirteenth and fourteenth series.[26]

On 29 July 2021, the BBC announced that Chris Chibnall, who served as executive producer and showrunner of the series for the Thirteenth Doctor, would depart the series after a run of specials in 2022.[27][28] In the BBC press release, Chibnall is quoted as saying: "I wish our successors - whoever the BBC and BBC Studios choose - as much fun as we've had. They're in for a treat!"[29] The new series was first teased by Piers Wenger on 25 August 2021, when he said an upcoming change for Doctor Who would be "radical".[30]

On 24 September 2021, the BBC announced Russell T Davies would return to Doctor Who as showrunner, after having previously acted as showrunner from 2005 to 2010 for the Ninth and Tenth Doctors. He took over from Chibnall for the show's 60th anniversary in 2023 and for series beyond.[31] Davies is joined by the Bad Wolf production company, which was founded by fellow former Doctor Who executive producer Julie Gardner and former BBC head of drama Jane Tranter.[32] In October 2021, it was announced that Sony would acquire a majority of Bad Wolf.[33][34] Bad Wolf also took over creative control of Doctor Who beginning with the 60th anniversary specials, allowing BBC Studios to focus on establishing Doctor Who as a global brand.[35]

Phil Collinson returned to the show as producer, having previously produced episodes from 2005 to 2008.[36] By January 2022, according to the CV of block producer Vicki Delow, it stated that series 14 was "currently in production";[37] Davies confirmed by March 2022 that production had begun at Bad Wolf Studios in Cardiff.[38] William Oswald is also editing for the new series, having last edited for Doctor Who in "Twice Upon a Time" (2017).[39]

In November 2023, Davies referred to the fourteenth series as "Season One" in SFX 372. Former showrunners Steven Moffat and Chris Chibnall had considered similar titles for their debut series.[1] The Christmas special's title and official airdate was announced via a Disney+ press release on 5 November 2023.[40]

In December 2023, Gatwa commented that he was told off for using profanity while in-costume, and that the younger audience of Doctor Who contrasted with what he had become used to from his previous role on Sex Education.[41][42]

Writing

In December 2021, Davies confirmed that he had already written some episodes,[43] and in November 2022, he was quoted in Doctor Who Magazine as having written a further special episode outside of the 60th anniversary specials.[44][45] In December 2022, Davies further stated in Doctor Who Magazine that the series would consist of eight episodes, to be followed by a further festive special.[46] On 12 February 2023, Davies was quoted on the Michael Ball show on BBC Radio 2 stating that the fourth episode was "one of the greatest things I've ever made in my life".[47][48] On 24 October 2023, Kate Herron and Briony Redman were announced as co-writers of an episode for the series,[49] with their episode being directed by Ben Chessell.[50]

In March 2024, it was confirmed that former head writer Steven Moffat would return to write an episode of the series,[51] the third for the series,[3] directed by Julie Anne Robinson.[51] Moffat, who had previously served as a writer on the series from 2005 to 2017 and was showrunner from 2010 to 2017 for the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctor, commented in December 2021 that he had talked with Davies about his plans for the series.[52] Davies also reportedly asked Chris Chibnall, who had served as showrunner from 2018 to 2022, to return as a writer, but this offer was declined.[53]

Filming

Filming for the series marked a change in the studio location, with the new studio, Wolf Studios, taking over from Roath Lock Studios as the company for in-house filming, where the series has filmed since 2012.[54] This change came about as Bad Wolf was set to co-produce along with the BBC going forward.[32] Bad Wolf further filed for a new subsidiary company, also run by Gardner, called "Whoniverse1 LTD".[55]

Pre-production for the series commenced on 26 September 2022,[56] and filming began on 5 December.[57][58] Dylan Holmes Williams directed the first block, consisting of the fourth and fifth episodes.[13][59] Mark Tonderai directed the second block, consisting of the 2023 Christmas special, having previously directed the eleventh series episodes "The Ghost Monument" and "Rosa" (both 2018).[60][59] Julie Anne Robinson directed the third block, consisting of the first and third episodes.[61][62] Ben Chessell directed the fourth block, consisting of the second and sixth episodes.[63] Jamie Donoughue directed the fifth production block, which consisted of the seventh and eighth episodes.[64][65]

Filming concluded on 14 July 2023.[66]

Music

On 24 April 2023, the BBC announced that Murray Gold would be returning as composer for the 2023 specials,[69] and the fourteenth series.[64] The theme tunes for the Fifteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday, titled "Fifteen" and "The Life of Sunday" respectively, debuted on BBC Radio 2 on 12 October 2023, as part of Doctor Who @60: A Musical Celebration.[70][71]

Release

Promotion

On 30 November 2023, the title, synopsis and guest cast for "The Church on Ruby Road" were revealed.[72] A trailer for the special was released after "The Giggle" on 9 December 2023.[73] The cast attended a press launch at the BFI Southbank on 12 December 2023, where Gatwa and Gibson lit the London Eye blue; this was part of a "Doctor Who takeover" of the London South Bank, which featured an interactive 'Art of Regeneration’ sculpture, and a showcase of the Fifteenth Doctor's sonic screwdriver.[74][75] Gatwa appeared on The Graham Norton Show on 15 December 2023 to promote the special, where a preview clip was shown.[76][77]

On 25 December 2023, the first teaser trailer for the fourteenth series was shown on BBC One after the airing of "The Church on Ruby Road", confirming that the series will start in May 2024.[78][79] On 18 February 2024, the first promotional poster was released on social media.[80] The premiere date and new broadcast plans were announced on 15 March 2024, along with the release of a second teaser trailer and poster. Davies said it was his "great delight to unleash a whole new season of the Doctor and Ruby’s adventures together".[81] A March 2024 press release teased that the series will feature "adventures all the way from the Regency era in England, to war-torn future worlds".[82]

Disney+ released its official trailer for the series on 22 March 2024.[83]

Broadcast

The series was preceded by three specials which aired between November and December 2023, marking Davies' return and the show's 60th anniversary, as well as the first episodes to be released internationally on Disney+.[84] The 2023 Christmas special, "The Church on Ruby Road", aired on 25 December, serving as Gatwa and Gibson's first full episode. The fourteenth series is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, with a midnight release of the first two episodes on BBC iPlayer and Disney+, before both are aired on BBC One later that day, with subsequent episodes following the same release pattern.[4][85]

Doctor Who: Unleashed

The series is set to be accompanied by Doctor Who: Unleashed, a behind-the-scenes companion show on BBC Three. Adopting a similar format to Doctor Who Confidential, Unleashed follows every new episode of Doctor Who with a 30-minute installment on BBC Three, hosted by Newsbeat presenter Steffan Powell. The show was announced on 27 September 2023, after accurate reports of the show surfaced the previous year.[86][87]
