Hittner outside now to Faber on the wing. Maroons in their dark away uniforms. The rams in home white. Here is a bounce pass up high. Now down low to Sarcone. She's doubled. Back out. Shot up. No good by butler. Rebounded by Sarcone. She traveled with it. >> Let's the talk keys to the game for Polk. Rebounds. Don't let them get the offensive rebounds. Faber and Sarcone are a one-two punch. Polk needs to control the tempo. Dowling will try to slow down the game. Polk, don't play their style. Be patient. Don't break down on defense when Dowling is being patient on offense. >> A left-handed runner off the glass. It's 2-0 southeast Polk. >> Keys to the game for Dowling, use the size advantage. Faber and Sarcone, a punch, the big high-low combination. They can score inside and outside. So can Hittner. They need to defend the three. Southeast Polk, nine threes to beat valley. They are shooting 44% from the three-point line. >> Shot missed by Dowling. Southeast Polk on offense again. >> 40 years they have been involved in Iowa girls high school athletics P in some way or another. Coaching at several schools. Won a state championship at Des Moines east. Four at Dowling Catholic. >> Over 700 wins, fifth all time in the state of Iowa. The shot is good and we are tied. >> Faber made the all tournament team in 2013. >> She's an all-state player this year. Just under five to go in the first. Six. Here a steal by Hittner tries to save it. Goes into the media row. It will be southeast Polk ball. >> Hittner, just a 5'11" sophomore. So much fun to watch play. She can rebound. She'll bring the ball up the court. She shoots outside and inside. Definitely a D-1 prospect. >> We have talked to several coaches who are are looking at her now. Rams nearly lose it. They are back on offense. Bounce pass. Cutting in. Scoring is Penquite. >> She had 14 points in the championship game last year. Polk won that one 43-34 over Dowling. >> Here is the three pointer, up and in by Daniel. It's a long two-pointer. We are knotted at four. 5:19 the to go here in the first. Maroons on offense. A tie ball game. Short jump shot up and in by Daniel. Three pointer on the way. That's an airball by Penquite. >> Polk has been good from the three point line. Shooting 44%. They need ten of those. Ten threes. They made only 15 field goals in the game. Ten threes to beat Waterloo west to get into the championship game. >> They are so efficient. Polk 45%. Dowling, 52%. From downtown at the edge there, really goes to Dowling as well. They hit 43%. They can both shoot the ball. That's for sure. This is still good on the rebound and back up. Sarcone outside. Here's the three-pointer rattled in that time by Hayden butler. >> Catholic using their size advantage. Two rebounds in a row. >> 9D-4 . The runner doesn't go on the rebound by butler. Gets it out to Faber. Butler will take it up. Under four minutes to go in the first quarter 5a championship game. From Wells Fargo Reyna in downtown Des Moines. Final game of championship week inside to Sarcone. She fouls. That foul on Penquite. >> Sarcone working the block here. Look how hard they work on the O boards. Beck ka Hittner dishes it out to hit the three. . >> Dowling will in-bound. Hittner thought about a shot. Splitting two defenders high off the glass and it's in. That's what was talked about earlier. She's only a sophomore. That's why schools are looking at her now at the next level. >> She was so good in the state tournament. The championship game, she struggled. Had 15 or 17 in the SEM I game. Made the all tournament team. >> Abby Penquite, no. Hittner playing on a bad ankle she sprained earlier this week. Didn't think she was going to play. Coach said if she doesn't play we don't have ten. Dowling, that shot in and out. No good by butler. Rams trying to stop the Dowling run in the first. Hittner calling out the play. Now over to uhl cutting around many the paint. Nearly traveled. Pass is outside. Abby Penquite THOKs down the three. >> Abby Penquite, capable of putting up big numbers from the outside. >> Averaged nearly 14 points a game during the year to lead the Rams. >> Just a sophomore. Her sister Annie, a senior. >> Inside to Sarcone for two. 13-7 Dowling. Big crowd on hand here tonight. At Wells Fargo on the drive is Huinker. The rebound, they scramble into the corner. The ball goes out of bounds. The official will wait for the call here. It will be Dowling basketball. >> Those are tough as a player. She let it go out of bounds. When in doubt grab the ball. Don't make the ref make the decision. >> A veteran crew working tonight in the state championship game. Dowling now with it. Again inside to Faber. Knocked away. Now outside. The ballast touched by KWUL. Still Dowling ball. 1:50 to go in the first. >> Dowling beat Johnston 38-35 to earn their 17th trip to state. >> Jump shot in and good by Daniel. Dowling up 15-7. These teams met early if this the regular season. It was Dowling with the victory. 69-53 at home. That was real early before both teams settled in for the season. Southeast Polk now. Huinker, cut off. The pass nearly taken away. Now a three-pointer by Huinker. No good. A shot blocked by Daniel. Rebounded by southeast Polk. Another three from Penquite doesn't go. Now a foul. >> Penquite, fearless from the three-point line. Just not connecting. Look at the defense from Dowling. The size advantage. Daniel with the block there. >> Foul was on Huinker, her second. She has to go on to the ball game. Coach DALY wants an explanation. She'll take a time-out with 1:10 remaining here in the first. Southeast Polk will take a time-out with Dowling up 15-7. >> Dowling right now using their height advantage, crashing the O boards. On defense they are not getting easy shots. Southeast Polk is taking threes but not connecting now. >> Both teams had a very short trip down here to Wells Fargo arena. If you look at the old map sitting over there at the Iowa hall of pride we'll show you how far they had to travel. West Des Moines Catholic six miles down here. Southeast Polk, just ten miles. That's why we have a huge crowd here tonight at Wells Fargo arena. >> You could jog it. >> I don't know if I could jog it anymore. >> Lace up your shoes. I'll come from the west. You come from the east side. >> All right. Now Dowling leading 15-7. Coach Hanson talked about after the semifinals they got off to a bad start in the regional finals and the semifinals. Said it's critical we start better in the championship game. They have done just that. >> Good strong start by Dowling now. Doing it on defense. Rebounding. Good offense as well. >> Shot no good. Rebounded by southeast Polk. Rebound for the rams T. Dowling has 11 in the ball game. Abby Penquite. We have a foul here. The foul on Faber. >> That's two on Faber. >> We'll have to keep an eye on the foul situation. 44 seconds remaining in the quarter. Rams cut off the play for the last shot if they want. Annie Penquite on the dribble. >> The Dowling starters play the bulk of the minutes for the team. They don't go real deep. They can. >> Uhl with 26 seconds. Now to Abby Penquite. The runner doesn't go. Rebound by uhl. Up and in and the foul. >> The Rams showing rebounding guts of their own, getting in there. Doesn't matter that they are taller. Go in there and get a rebound. Be tough. Push somebody around. That's exactly what happened here. Take the contact and put it in. >> Uhl just 5'7" but got the board in. That's a three-point play after the free throw. 15-10, cut it is lead to five. Now Dowling can play for the final shot of the quarter. Maroons bring it up. 11 on the clock. Under 10. Three pointer. Butler, no good. On the rebound it's pulled down by the rams. Here they come. One second left. Will they get a shot off? They will not. So the quarter ends with Dowling with a 15-10 lead. Let's see how both teams got to the championship game. We'll go back upstairs to Paul YAGER. >> Exciting 4-A semifinals just like this is. Let's look at how both teams got here and their journey to the championship. In the 5a semifinal Friday morning at Wells Fargory rethat, southeast Polk's second year. Second final for Tracy DALY. Can she get there? Southeast Polk playing west Waterloo. Inside the Iowa state recruit Blair Thomas. Big night for her. It was Jessica Cole, the three ball from the right side. She had a big game. Cole again. This time from the other elbow. And the corner again. Jessica Cole with a big night. Abby Penquite throw it is ball in the air. Polk advances to play the winner of city high and Dowling Catholic. This is the last game of the semifinal round Friday afternoon. The gator chomp before Hailey heads to the University of oh Florida and becka Hittner, the big player for Dowling Catholic. Jones for three early. Then Hittner hits the three. Hayden but the LER won a scholarship. She's headed to Williams. She'll hit the three shot there. Dowling Catholic didn't lead until the fourth. They win it 49-44. That's the journey to the championship. Now back down stairs for the second quarter. >> Thank you, Paul. Dowelling with a five-point lead. If you go by rankings, they both had two upsets, respectively this the quarters and the search and rescue MIS to get here. >> They knocked off the number one team. Excuse me. Make it Dowling had to knock off the number one team. They did it with defense. Tonight the defense comes into play here. >> The Rams knock off Dowling and Waterloo west. The three-pointer doesn't go. Hittner tries to get it. She finally corrals it in. Dowling gets the board. They will bring it up. TLUSZ butler. Bounce pass to Daniel. Back to butler. Daniel again looks inside the arc. Throws up a long two. Doesn't go. Penquite the board. Rams work it the other way. In the corner on the drive. Now a kick out to Abby Penquite who hits the long deuce. A three-point ball game. Dowling 15, southeast Polk 12. Polk had the early lead. It's been Dowling ever since. Butler. Bounce pass right side. Over to Daniel. Daniel pulls up for another SQUUMP shot. Off the mark. Tipped away and rebounded by uhl. Uhl at 5'7" gets a lot of rebounds now for southeast Polk. On the drive, a little runner. Rebounded by Dowling. >> It's not the size of of the dog but the size of the fight in the dog. >> In position. >> She's been right where the ball is all the time. Butler. Now feeding down low. Sarcone uses the left hand. >> Speaking of size. Sarcone does a nice job using hers. One dribble drop. I love it for the young players. See how she went there. Didn't dribble straight down. >> The ball thrown away by the rams. >> Look at Sarcone again. She goes somewhere with the dribble. Make that dribble count and use the glass. >> She switched hands after she made the move. It was an easy two points for Sarcone. Dowling back with it. Nearing the six minute mark if in the second. The 5a championship game. A three pointer up and in by butler. >> It's the first three pointer for Dowling Catholic. >> 20-12. It's an eight-point lead. That matches Dowling's largest of the ball game. Cole with it. Now up high to Ira. No. It's rebounded by Hittner. >> Hittner grabbed the rebound and brings it up. Coach Hanson talking about his 5'11" standout sophomore. Always ready and has no fear taking big shots. >> Faber is fouled. They are feeding it to Faber or Sarcone. This time Faber makes the rams pay. >> Faber made that all-tournament team last year. Hadded a great tournament. Scored 45 points in the tournament. Last time they met 15 points, six rebounds. >> In scoring, rebounding, blocked shots. She's just a junior. >> Faber comes from a long line of athletes. The Des Moines register had a nice feature. 22 were children of former state championship tournaments from Iowa and other states. Grandpa Harold was on the state team in the 1950s. >> She makes them both. Mitchell checked in for southeast Polk. She's on the dribble now. Just a freshman. Knocked down by Ira. Ira for three in the corner. Now Dowling the other way. Daniel to butler. Again inside. This was tipped away. Faber gets it back. Daniel. Three-pointer. No good this time by butler and the long rebound goes to southeast Polk. 22-15. We have got a traveling violation on the rams. >> Southeast Polk, we know they love shooting in this gym. That lit it up next year and are lighting it up in this one. >> Abby Penquite back in for the Rams. 4:21 left here in the second. Butler and Daniel just passing back and forth now inside to Faber and a foul. We'll see who they call it on. Jessica Cole picked up the foul. Her second. Now southeast Polk will make another a substitution. It will be Anna. We are seeing more players than they would like because of foul trouble. >> Dowling crashing the boards, getting it inside. Putting them in that situation. >> Hittner has it back up high. Back to Hittner. Left side, wide open. Butler takes the three. 25-15. Here's the three-pointer by Penquite. You don't see Dowling run much when they get the rebound. They get back into the offensive set and methodically work it in. Here is the jump shot. Daniel hits it. It's a 12-point lead for Dowling. To Ira. She scores. Nice move around Taber. Thought she got pushed. >> Faber has two fouls. Take it at her. Penquite recognizing that. >> Nearing the 3:00 mark in the second. Butler eyeing the defense. Hitler has been quiet offensively. Inside, Faber the power move. She's fouled. Big mismatch there. They found that mismatch. Molly is 5'6". Can't handle Faber. First free throw is in. Faber, 74% on the season. Second free throw is short this time. Tipped into the hands of Ira. Gives it to Penquite. Still southeast Polk ram ball. Let's watch the block here. That ball was blocked. Rams. A 13-foot jump shot is good by Ira and the foul. That's going to be on Hittner. >> And keep going. Sure they will block shots. They're taller. That doesn't mean you avoid contact. Sometimes when you make contact you force the ref to call the towel. >> Hittner will sit down with two fouls forcing the maroons to put in Kennedy childers, junior guard. Free throw made. 28-20. The Rams cut it to eight. Key fouls in the basketball game to keep our eyes on as we move into the second half. 2:31 remaining in the first. >> Kennedy played just a minute in that semifinal game against Iowa city high. Not seeing a lot of minutes here. When the team is in foul trouble your bench players have to come in and step up. >> Back outside. Cross court pass. A traveling violation here. It is. Daniel traveled and the Rams will have a chance to cut into the lead more. Nearing the two-minute mark in the second. 28-20. A rematch of last year's 5a championship. On the dribble is Ira. Inside. Rebounded by Dowling. The maroons bring it down court. Lots of contact there. Are they going call the foul or out of bounds. Southeast Polk gets the ball back. >> Tracy DALY telling the Rams to be patient. >> Patience is usually what Dowling thrives on. They love to be patient. Whether it's offense or defense. Crashing through is Ira for the score. It's a six-point game. 28-22. >> Rick, I know southeast Polk got here with three-point shooting but this game they win by driving in, causing foul trouble. Getting to the hoop. That helped with the comeback run. >> Childers, a 7-0 run now by southeast Polk. Butler, under a minute to go. Faber, no. Rebounded by southeast Polk. Here. Come the RALS. -- Rams. Abby Penquite to Ira. Left side Mitchell. Spin move. Pulled back. Thinks about it. Instead gives it to Abby Penquite. Lots of contact there. Bounce pass. Mitchell for three from downtown and nails it. The freshman buried the three. That's a three-point game with 15 seconds to go this the half. Under ten. They're looking for Faber. She's got it this the paint. Turn around and the contact. Two free throws coming up for Faber. >> Mitchell had nine points this is the opening round victory against west Des Moines valley. >> Got shut out of game two in the semifinals. Faber stands many in. Two free throws coming up. The first is good. 29-25. >> Faber 15 points, five and a half rebounds on the season. >> Connects on both of them. Five-point lead for Dowling. Three seconds. They have to get a quick shot off. Abby Penquite from half court. Just a bit too hard. We are at the half. Dowling with a five-point lead over the southeast Polk rams looking for a little revenge this year. It's 30-25 maroons. >> Southeast Polk with a 7-0 run late in the second quarter. You saw them heat up from the three-point line. You saw them exploit the fact that Dowling is the in foul trouble, getting to the hoop. That's what they THEED to do. This is a taller team. They got shots blocked. We saw it. But putting the ball on the ground, it's a good game plan for southeast Polk. >> Let's go up to Paul with coach Hanson. >> Thank you very much. Coach, good first half there. What's working for the maroons now, coach? >> We're not really very patient now. They started many the triangle. We had a game plan. Thousand they have come back out. Sort of a 3-2. We haven't had the patience to get the ball in the hands of the kids who need to be shooting. Defensively they were worried about three pointers. We're giving up the lane. We have to play basic defense and cover the threes out there. >> Penquite has not had a great game from outside. Neither has the Rams. Does that concern you? That the law of averages will come back and look hotter in the second half? >> We have to guard. Play defense, guard and rebound. We've done a decent job. We have kids who are almost guarding one kid. We have to get help defense inside on the dribble penetration. >> You're even on rebounds. Is that good or bad? >> It's good, yep. >> All right. Thank you very much. That's coach BAB Hanson from the maroons. Thanks for joining us at the half. We'll go back down to the floor here at Wells Fargo arena for a special presentation. >>> The scholarship was with established in 1991 as a tribute to the man who guided the women's high school athletic union from 1954 to 2002. Thanks for making the journey. >> Thank you. >> Craig hill, thank you very much. Growing up in Iowa city with the last name LaurenZEN isn't a way to fly under the radar in competition. But the family name and a common bond was the foundation for Hailey. Years ago when it seemed basketball stardom may not be in the cards for Hailey, hard work and sound advice brought her to the doorstep of a very special senior season. As she discovered it's all in the family. >> She's accompanied by her mother Karen Napolitano, brothers, her father Al and step mom barb springs. >> As the daughter of two former University of Iowa with athletes, Hailey has always been a little hawk. Add to the mix step mom barb Frankie from the University of Wisconsin, one might easilies mistake Hailey TR a natural. >> I started in sixth grade. That seems late actually for most people. Most stories start at 5 or 6. I changed as a player from starting at literally the bottom, being on the end of the bench all the time. Not playing in games. There was a period where I ran like I had bricks in my shoes. >> I came from long island on a field hockey scholarship. There is a natural inclination as an athlete that you want your child to be an athlete. Hailey's transformation is fun. There would be moments of complete awkwardness. Her dad and I would look at each other like whose child is this? >> What you want to do is set your child up to succeed. We never wanted to hold it out that if you don't achieve at this level you aren't a success. Just because your mom and dad and step mom had success doesn't mean you have to. If you set your heart on oh it, we'll help you. >> It was a struggle for her. She's competitive. She wasn't good and those things don't go well together. >> With her ambition outpacing her athleticism, Hailey turned to the home bench for advice. >> I picked her up at the end of camp. She was bummed. She said, I wasn't an all-star. >> I came up to mom and dad and I was crying. They're like, what's wrong. I said, I wasn't selected to play in the game. They said, what do you think you could do to change it. I said, I don't know. They said, practice and get better or you can quit and just be done. I said, I want to get better. >> It took from sixth to ninth grade for the transformation to happen. In that period she grew six inches. >> Of course growing helped a lot. It hurt me a little bit, too. I had to grow into my body and I was awkward. >> She worked hard at every aspect. It cull my that itted at the right time. That allowed her to excel as a junior and senior. >> Excel she did. Now standing 6'3" 1/2 she led the hawks to the tournament following an undefeated regular season. >> She's made as much improvement from the first day the she was here as any student athlete I have had in my 16 years here. What makes Hailey good is she makes her teammates better. She's talking to them all the time. I would like to red shirt her. It will take two players to replace her next year. >> She once found herself at the end of the bench. She now sits at number 35 on ESPN's list of top national recruits. >> September 1 of her junior year was the first year you could receive mail. I came home, opened the mailbox and literally could not take out. There was so much jammed in there, I couldn't pull it out. She went from a kid who was never going to play to probably 90 schools writing her . >> Just as the littlehawks are preparing for life without Hailey, Hailey is preparing for life as something other than a hawk. >> I'm going to the University of Florida. They are known as the gators. One of the top things for me was school. You can't play basketball forever. Let's be honest. Florida is number three in the country for interior design which is what I would like to be when I grow up -- an interior designer. >> There is this Hailey, Al's daughter or people know her as my daughter. Even her step-mom, going down to Florida she getses to be whoever she wants to be. >> I may feel lonely once in a while. I know that. It will be a hard thing. I get to be me. >> In her final season at city high the family is taking time to enjoy their tradition and continue the legacy of Iowa high school basketball. My freshman year my mom makes me waffles and strawberries as a quick snack before I play. That night I had one of the best games I had all year. We decided before every home game she would make me strawberries and waffles. >> We have 45 minutes where she eats waffles, we chat and she takes off. We're grateful for those moments. I'll miss them. >> Hailey embodies the spirit of what women's, girls basketball is about in the state of Iowa. She's not just an athlete. She's a well rounded person. She's going to grow into an incredible woman as she continues to mature. Ultimately to me that's what the technician of girls basketball in the state is about. >> One of the biggest things my dad emphasizes is focus on effort and everything else comes naturally. >> Hailey and Paige Griner who we featured grew up playing on the same team. They traveled all over the state togethers as kids. They have remained close, attending each other's high school games when possible. I bet they watched each other's features on Iowa public television and I'm sure they will follow their careers as they advance in college. Let's look at the first half of the very good class 5a game at Wells Fargo arena. The 5a championship. Southeast Polk and Dowling. Hittner outside of butler for three. The big shot early on for the maroons. They had a 9-4 lead. Give and go underneath to Penquite. That's an think for two. To the second quarter. Butler for three. After the pass from Daniel. On the drive. Ira inside for two. Polk. Then a three-pointer from the freshman. Sierra Mitchell. They are within three at that point. That's as close as the rams would get. 30-25. Dowling Catholic. Joining us at the half is Dr. Tony papas. Good to see you. Southeast Polk is a good team. You have a very good team of your own. What's Polk doing right in the first half? >> They are hanging in there, moving the ball. If if they can get loose for more threes they will make it a tough game on Dowling. >> When you're a shooting team you keep telling the girls to shoot until it goes in. >> Absolutely. They are the top shooting team in Iowa. They have shot the most and made the most. They have several people that can drain the three-point shot. Makes them extremely difficult to defend. Dowling is a great defensive team. They have size and length that really make it tough on anybodies, including Polk. >> Coach MctagGERT, what are the maroons doing right? >> They controlled the boards and got second shots. That makes it difficult. Dowling, as we found out yesterday, they are so long. But we have played Polk and they are a fine team. They can shoot the three as well as anybody. West is up there. >> Hittner had a big game against you. She's only got two points. They are looking at something knowing what they did to your team. Are they doing right on defense? >> They're doing a triangle two. You pick your poison. They will get wide open looks, Dowling is. They are guarding the Faber girl also. If they hit the wide open shots it makes it difficult. Now they are doing a nice job. It's an entertaining game. >> Very entertaining. Hopefully next year we can see both of the guys down there. You have to come spend time with me. >> We hope so. >> Thank you so much. We are at halftime. It's 30-25. Earlier tonight we had in the class 3-A Floyd valley and unity Christian. Those squads share the town of orange city. 1.4 miles apart. After the game they posed together for a picture. We'd like to thank twitter for finding that one on twitter. We posted it as well. Thank you very much for joining us at halftime. Let's go to the exciting second half. If it's anything like we have had so far, Rick and Molly, half two should be a doozy. >> It should, Paul. You have a five-point ball game. Southeast Polk weathered the storm. They have taken twice as many threes as Dowling. >> They love shooting in the gym. The girls told us they feel like it's home here. They shot here last year. They loved being here at Wells Fargo arena. Do you know who's not shot it much? Hittner. She scored 19 against Iowa city high. Only one shot off in the first half. >> She had two fouls as we look at the stats from the first half. You see Dowling shooting the ball better. Overall on the floor and then from downtown, rebounds are dead even. Dowling with way more assists in the ball game. Points in the paint. Ironically southeast Polk lead it is category. Sometimes that's a stat you've got to qualify a little bit. Dowling is getting the ball inside. They are getting fouled a lot. >> They are shooting free throws. Another stat worth talking about is bench points. Polk now, 11 bench points. Dowling, zero. Eight of those are are Ira off the bench for the Rams. >> You see the game leaders here. Butler, nine points and Ira off the bench with eight. We'll see if Hittner can get going in the second half. She's been the offensive force for Dowling in the quarter finals and the semifinals. Really with one good leg. She had a sprained ankle and the Hamptons weren't sure she would be ready to play Wednesday. What a gamer she is. Southeast Polk has kept her in check. You see both coaches at the half say the triangle and two defense for southeast Polk. They will key on Faber and Hittner and make everybody else beat them. >> Coach Hanson talked on offense the maroons need to show more patience. That's the brand of basketball they play. That's the brand of basketball they coach. She want it is right people getting the shots off. He meant Hittner. She needs P more shots in the second half of the team. >> I was talking to him after the semifinals. He put her in a big category. He talked about good players and great players. He's already calling her great at this young anyone. Hittner goes this, gets the rebound and puts it up again off the glass. No. Two shots for Hittner. She gets another offensive board. Tries to feed Sarcone. Dowling slows it back down. >> Hittner is frustrated. I love that she's still going after the ball, getting the O board. >> Dowling nearly loses it trying to go inside again. Butler. The ball in the corner to Sarcone. Back to butler. Now Faber. They crash in on her. In and out, though. On the rebound, Sarcone trying to battle away. Polk comes up with it. Penquite with the board. Rams trying to cut into the lead. Penquite. Huinker. In the corner for Abby Penquite. Two-point ball game. >> Abby went 1 for 7 from three-point land in the first half . She's a great outside shooter. >> Rams keep chucking it up from the outside and hope the law of averages works in their favor. Working the offense for Dowling. Holding on now to a two-point lead. Trying to get revenge on southeast Polk after the Rams beat them for the title. Inside, Sarcone with a left hand. >> High-low. Faber. >> Four-point lead for Dowling. 32-28. Just under way in the third quarter in the 5a championship game. Annie Penquite puts one up. No good. Rebounded by Dowling. Daniel with the rebound. >> Talk a little bit about the triangle and two defense. Two players for southeast Polk play man to man on Hittner and Faber. The other three girls play a zone defense in the form of a triangle. >> There is a baseline jump shot. Too hard for Daniel. Rebounded. Rams will run this time. Into the Toronto court. Three-pointer on the way. Penquite misses it. Rebounded by Faber. 5:30 remaining in the third from Wells Fargo aare rethat in downtown Des Moines. Butler. Inside they go. Turn around shot for Faber. It's blocked there by Sarcone. Now a foul. It looks like Hittner. That's number three on her if it is. >> Sarcone again. Using the long arms. You see Hittner at the end. Gives the ref a reason to blow the whistle and picks up her third foul. >> Molly just looked a little bit fatigued compared to the first two games we saw. When you're playing with an injury that can catch up. Especially when you have to play three games in three days. Four days actually. Make the second. Four-point ball game. 34-30. >> Hittner was big when the teams met in the regular season. She had 22 points when Dowling won 69-53. >> They go inside to Sarcone. She scores. 36-30 Dowling. Hanson will leave Hittner in with three fouls. They may not have a chance. Huinker passes it off to Annie Penquite. Now over to Cole. A loose ball is picked off by hit they are. She'll go all the way. It's a block and out of bounds. She's looking for the foul. It will be maroon ball. >> 5'7" uhl comes in and blocks the shot of the 5'11" Hittner. Great steals. Takes it all the way. Look at the hustle by uhl. >> Great defensive play. Ira checks in for Polk. Maroons ball after the block out of bounds. Hittner drives in. This time she scores up her fourth point of the ball game. 38-30. Dowling up by eight. Huinker in the corner for Penquite. Here's Annie Penquite. Jump shot Huinker, no good. Number two on her. Polk with just one foul in the second half ha. 3:21 to go in the third. They will lob it in. Corralled by Sierra Mitchell. Mitchell, just a freshman at 5'6". Gives it out to Ira who had a big first half. This shot, no. Rebounded by butler. Butler by hind the back dribble. Brought it up for the maroons. Sarcone in the corn. Back to butler. Daniel. Butler this time on the drive. Lots of contact and the foul there will be on number 44, ALLY Ira. >> What they do with the patience is lull you to sleep for a minute. You see them caught flat-footed. Butler recognized it and got to the hoop. >> An easy call for the official. Two free throws for butler. 81% free throw shooter. Knocks down the firstment. Dowling back up by nine. This could make it a ten-point lead. It's good. Polk 0 for 6 now. They dug themselves another ten-point deficit. Annie Penquite THOKed away. Nearly out of bounds. Saved by Ira. Now uhl with it. Back to Ira. Back out to uhl. Cross court pass. Abby Penquite. That's short. Pulled down by Mitchell. Back to Ira. Doesn't need the dribble. She uses the glass. Nice job by the post player. >> When the big girls have POBs it's when they catch the ball and want to put it on the floor and the little players knock it away. >> Those little P pesky players take it away. I might have had more points if I got rid of the dribble. >> Let's see what coach Daly is telling the rams. >> If we play defense aggressively it doesn't matter what we play. You are letting them do it and reacting to what happens. What's happening is the two-foot shot. Hey, run fusion on offense. Get it done. One, two, three, one, two, three. >> Daly coaching up her team in her second season. She won it all a year ago. >> Was in Missouri. Try to get this cut down or tied early in the fourth and forced the the Hansons to put her back in with four fouls. >> That's a great point, Rick. >> Cross court pass for butler. >> Butler pulls it back. I wouldn't be surprised if Dowling runs it all the way down. >> This is the patience we talk about. When I say we talk about, Bob and Sharon Hanson talk about with the maroons. The patience pays off when you have fouls. >> They worked the mismatch. They get Toyota Faber who was going against the 5'6" Mitchell who commits the foul. >> Three team fouls for southeast Polk. >> 16.3 reHANing in the third. Dowling trying to get it in. No college teams use this gym now. >> Let's go to Daly. Her team down by just six. >> You have to stay with butt with LER. >> Trying to decipher that a little bit from Tracy Daly it sounds like they are concerned about leaving butler open. >> They are talking about whether they should stay in the triangle and two. They will stay in it, is what it sounds like. Now two people getting the man to man coverage are Faber and butler. >> They saw one of the assistants there talk about the defensive change. They will eat clock now. Inside. Triple team. Faber, though POB with three rams around her. A ten-point Dowling lead. >> Who needs clock? I stand corrected. We thought they would go for eight, NIEB, ten passes. Go to Faberment. That's good, too. >> Faber trying for the rebound. A nice offensive board and put-back from Huinker. One thing Dowling will do if they see a mismatch they take advantage of it. They're smart. >> They have a height advantage in the game. Using it to their advantage. >> Both teams are well coached. Let's see what coach Daly says. >> You two, get in the corner. Get in Dorner. We are setting a screen. If you don't have a quick shot you're attacking the rim. Jump shot. Look for shooters out. When the shot goes out, go get a rebound. We are standing there looking at it. We are not shooting well. We have to get second and third shots. They will foul you. When they get the ball in we need to be looking. If they do this, you need to foul. Hey. If we don't get this I want to set a screen. Set screens for shooters. Look for the driving kick. We have to attack. Let's go. Keep fighting! >> You heard Daly say when I cross my arms, foul. She was doing it a lot on the last possession and they didn't. Back to the line she goes. >> Faber waits for the foul. You know it's coming. The junior playing a lot of poise tonight. Playing like she's on a mission. I'm so impressed with her play tonight. The way she rebounded. Back to Hittner on the bench. She had a bucket. She won a state championship. She's a sophomore. She has a lot of basketball left to play and has a smile on her face, as do the teammates. >> Free throw is in. 25 for Faber. Second one is up and good. Make it 26 for the junior. How would you like her coming back. 23 seconds left. Driving in and scoring is Cole. Now an over and back violation on Dowling. Actually southeast Polk will now get the ball back. Apparently Sarcone stepped over the line and tried to go back with the ball. That's a turnover. 20 seconds left. The three pointer is up in an air ball. It's Dowling ball with 14.4 seconds left. >> Bob and Sharon Hanson now five state titles. 14 seconds. Five state titles at Dowling. >> Butler is fouled. She are now shoot free throws. Talk about a winning combination. The Hansons have been around a while. They have put together 736 wins during the regular season. Now three more for 739 wins in their career. >> Championships in 92, 96, 2000, 2014. >> All the subs coming in. High fives for the Dowling maroons who win a championship tonight . We want to mention another person on the bench. Jerry chartthis -- chartNER. He get as title tonight. >> He's a volunteer. He volunteers time to coach this team. >> Great story. Two seconds left. One. The clock will run out. There will be no repeated 5a. The maroons are champions again. [ Cheers and Applause ] Five state titles for Dowling Catholic. The Hansons pull another one off. They haven't had one since 2000. For them that's a long drought, Molly. It may have seemed like forever. They have been pounding away at the state tournament. The 17th appearance for the maroons. The Hansons brought them here 11 times alone. They have won it five times. >> Got the first basketball championship in the yore 19 79. Not too long ago. Now five of they will at Dowling Catholic. >> They wave to the maroon fans. They will take home the trophy. Just a few miles west of here. And put it in the trophy rack in another championship for the maroons. What a run for southeast Polk. We'll toss it to the P.A. for the post game. >> The 2014 class 5a all tournament team presenting awards is Craig hill, president of the Iowa farm bureau. From south OOIS Polk, Abby Penquite. [ Cheers and Applause ] From Dowling Catholic, Audrey Faber. For Waterloo west, Hailey puck. From Iowa city high, KIARA washbun. From southeast Polk, Annie Penquite. And the captain of the 2014 class 5a all tournament team from Dowling Catholic, BECCA Hittner. >> So Hittner is the all-tournament captain. It may not have been her best game. She had five points and five rebounds. Keep in mind that in the quarter final she scored 24, 19 in the semifinals and she's done all of this with an a ankle that was sprained earlier in the week. What a gutsy performance. Now it's the runner-up trophy presentation. >> Your class 5a runner-up is the Rams from southeast Polk and coach Tracy Daly. Ladies and gentlemen, our 2014 class 5a state champion, the maroons from Dowling Catholic and coaches Bob and Sharon Hanson! [ Cheers and Applause ] We are the champions My friends We'll keep on fighting to the end >> The maroons are hoisting the trophy, showing it off to the fans. Number five in their storied history. And the Hansons have done it again. What a combination at Dowling. They give a little payback to southeast Polk who took the title from them a year ago on the this same court. Now let's go up to Paul. >> Five games, five great GRAMs at the state tournament. Let's see how this one played out in class 5a. The rematch between southeast Polk and Dowling Catholic. We begin early in the first quart. Hittner gets the steal -- controls it. Gives it to Hayden butler for three. Then southeast Polk, a beautiful pass inside to Annie Penquite. That's Daniel for the jumper from are the left side for the maroon. To the second quarter now. Butler had a big game shooting. She had nine first half three point -- nine points at the three point line. There was the ninth of the first half. That's Ira. Here's Mitchell for three. The freshman comes up big for the Rams. Keeping them in this ball game. They end the half on a 7-0 run. Dowling by five at the break. Second half inside. Sarcone has a great defensive night against Iowa city. A good offensive night. Again, Penquite makes the drive and one. Rams within seven. The three at the buzzer. That's as close as they would come. Sarcone. The freshman, Mitchell doesn't know when to quit. Led by Faber. 26 points. Bob and Sharon Hanson for a fifth title. Let's go to the court to talk with BAB Hanson. >> I'm here with Audrey Faber and coach Hanson. First, 26 points. You had a great performance tonight. You played the team last year this the championship. You weren't afraid to say the word revenge. How did it feel? >> Always. We have been focused and wanted the game. It's an amazing feel. We're happy. >> I love your fundamentals and the way you worked it. What's your mentality when you catch the ball be inside. >> I'm trying to be a threat in the lane. If I get double or triple teamed I try to get the easiest shot for the team. >> You were a threat. Congratulations. Coach, if I told you that you would win tonight and Hittner would score only five would you believe me? >> No. I was hoping she'd play more. You get that night where everything you do is just a little off. You pick up fouls. She had three of those. The other two kids did a good job. We got back in and she's aggressive. She was heart broken not to play much in the game. The other kid stepped up and did a good job. >> You were one of the best in the game of basketball. You and your wife. Your fifth state title. It's a cliche. How does it feel to win five? >> Coming back from Creighton and not coaching for five or six years and coming back for five years. Sharon said, I just can't do this college athletics. I have to get in there and work with kids. To come back, win one and to get close last year. It's always on your mind. What if it happens again for you. I told the kids you only get here so often. MAJ the best of it. Enjoy it. Play well. We had kids step up tonight. >> You and Sharon took time off from coaching but didn't miss a beat. >> Thanks. >> A great 5a game.
