Transcription

[music] E: My study abroad experience was in Copenhagen, Denmark. W: My study abroad experience involved me going to Copenhagen University. E: It was the best thing I've ever done. W: Copenhagen University is spread out throughout the state and has many different campuses. Whereas here we have one campus. [music] W: The classes in Denmark are way different from Purdue. E: They are four hours long with breaks in between. W: I had classes three days a week. E: You don't have daily homework or quizzes and tests. But all together it was good to see how other people learn and get the experience of being in a classroom with people from all over the world. [music] E: I made friends in many different countries. I lived in the city center in an apartment building with primarily all students who were studying abroad. W: You stay with a lot of international students so I made tons of international friends E: I had six different roommates from all over the world, Spain, Holland, France, a girl from California, Chicago. [music] E: The people while I was there were really nice. Everybody was really friendly. W: Danes are nice, they're super nice. E: I really felt there was no language barrier. Danish people speak English probably better than we do. W: They are the most helpful people. I miss Danes. E: As far as communication barriers, there was absolutely none. [music] E: There's really endless things to do. W: In Copenhagen there's so much to do. You can always go down to the harbor, it's called New House. It's a really famous, picturesque harbor. Alll these colored houses. E: It's a beautiful city to start out. It's really clean. There's always people walking about. There's a lot of great restaurants to go to. W: Everyone's walking, everyone's biking. If you go you should probably get a bicycle because everyone bikes. You feel so Danish once you're biking. E: You can go to the Carlesberg Museum, you can see the Little Mermaid. [music] W: Studying abroad is one of the best things I have ever done for myself. E: I'd recommend every student study abroad. It is one of the best things you can do while you're in college. W: I feel like I just grew up really. E: There's really no other time that you can travel to a different country for months at a time and have really no worries. W: You get to really find out what you do and what you don't like versus what you're just used to. E: Being in a different country for an extended period of time not only broadens your views on where you're from but it opens your eyes on how other people live as well. W; It was one of the best times of my life.

Overview

Festsalen in the main building located on Frue Plads.

In all, the City Campus occupies five sites:[2]

  • Center for Health and Society
  • Copenhagen Botanical Garden (Natural History Museum)
  • Geocentre Copenhagen, which is located on Øster Voldgade. It houses the Department of Geography and Geology and the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland.
  • The University Quadrangle, which is located on Frue Plads and used mainly for administration and representation.

Center for Health and Society

The Center for Health and Society is located in the former Copenhagen Municipal Hospital. As of January 2016, the Centre houses the entire Faculty of Social Sciences, most of the Department of Public Health and the Copenhagen School of Global Health.[3]

History

Copenhagen Municipal Hospital

The Copenhagen Municipal Hospital was one of the first buildings to be constructed on the glacis outside of the North Rampart when the fortifications were decommissioned. It was the first major project to be designed by Copenhagen's new city architect, Christian Hansen, who had recently returned to Denmark from Greece. Construction began in 1859 and the hospital was inaugurated on 19 September 1863.

Christian Hansen's original hospital building consisted of two three-story main wings joined together by two connectors.[4] In 1954, the complex was expanded by city architect Frederik Christian Lund in a style similar to that of the original buildings. The Copenhagen Municipal Hospital closed on 1 May 1999. The buildings were then taken over by University of Copenhagen.[5]

In 2005, the university established the Center for Health and Society in the former Copenhagen Municipal Hospital. A new building designed by Erik Møller Arkitekter was completed on the corner of Øster Farimagsgade and Gammeltoftsgade in 2013. It contains auditoriums for the University as well as a daycare for children of university faculty.[6]

Copenhagen Botanical Garden

The University of Copenhagen Botanical Garden covers an area of 10 hectares and is particularly noted for its extensive complex of historical glasshouses. The garden is part of the Natural History Museum of Denmark, which is itself part of the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Science. It serves both research, educational and recreational purposes.

The Botanical Garden had previously been located at Charlottenborg Palace, and was relocated to its new site in 1870.
