Chester D. Thompson

Chester D. Thompson is an American keyboardist. A rock, funk, jazz and soul artist, he was the keyboardist for Tower of Power from 1972 to 1983, and the organist for Santana from 1983 to 2009.^[1][2]

Biography

Thompson was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He started playing piano at age five.^[2] He moved to San Francisco Bay Area in 1969,^[3] and took a day job working at a bank.^[2] In 1972, he was hired by Tower of Power to be their first keyboards member after being heard playing at a gig.^[2] He remained in T.O.P. until 1983, when he left to join Santana. Coincidentally, a year later another member called Chester Thompson joined the band on drums. Thompson was with Santana for twenty-six years (1983-2009), during that time he helped co-write many tracks on Carlos Santana's 1987 album Blues for Salvador.^{[citation needed]}
