The Central Québec School Board (CQSB; French: Commission scolaire Central Québec) is an English-language school board in the province of Quebec, Canada, with its headquarters at 2046 chemin Saint-Louis, Quebec City.[3] It is one of nine English-language school boards in the province, having served the English-speaking community, under various names, since 1867.[7]

As a school board, CQSB's jurisdiction covers the largest territory in the province of Quebec, at 493,495 kilometres (306,644 miles).[7] The Central Québec School Board administers 18 schools and one adult and vocational education centre.[8][3] In 2012, eight of its nine secondary schools had a student population of less than 500.[8] CQSB's largest elementary school served almost 500 students, and its smallest one served less than 60 students in 2012.[8]

MY LIFE'S LIKE THIS BACKPACK I CARRY WITH ME. THE CONTENT INSIDE IT BRINGS COMPLEXITY. MY CLASSMATES ALL HAVE THEM, BUT NONE ARE THE SAME. EACH HAS ITS OWN ITEMS, EACH ATTACHED TO A NAME. THESE BACKPACKS GET HEAVY, THEY NEVER ARE LIGHT, THESE BACKPACKS IMPACTED BY EVERYDAY LIFE. TODAY FOR EXAMPLE, WHILE SITTING IN CLASS, A QUESTION CAME TO ME, THAT I WAS AFRAID TO ASK. I WONDER IF THIS TEACHER, STANDING IN FRONT OF ME HAS PRE-CONCEIVED NOTIONS OF WHO I SHOULD BE. AND WHAT ABOUT THE KID, WHO LIVES DOWN THE STREET, COMES TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY WITH NOTHING TO EAT. HER BACK PACK IS EMPTY OF PHYSICAL THINGS, BUT PACKED WITH THE FEELING EMBARRASSMENT BRINGS. BARRY IN MY CLASS, HE SITS NEXT TO ME HIS BACK PACK SAYS MARY HAUNTED BY ‘HIS” STORY. HE SITS IN HIS CLASS SHOULDERS UP STRAIGHT BUT WALKS BY THE RESTROOM WONDERING WHAT DOOR TO TAKE. MY BEST FRIEND AND I SIT TOGETHER ON THE BUS SHE HAS TWO MOTHERS, WHICH CAN CAUSE A FUSS. BULLIES POKE FUN OF HER FROM ONE STOP TO THE NEXT, BY THE END OF THE BUS RIDE, HER BACKPACK’S A WRECK. THEY CALL JOHNNY NAMES, 'CAUSE HE CAN’T READ OR WRITE. THOUGH THEY’RE ONLY WORDS, THEY KEEP HIM UP ALL NIGHT. AND WHAT’S EVEN WORSE, THEY PUSHED HIM AROUND. HIS BACK PACK WENT FLYING, AND FELL TO THE GROUND. WHAT I SAW COME FROM JOHNNY’S BACKPACK THAT DAY, WAS ANGER, SELF-HATRED, SELF-HARM AND DISMAY. AS I HELPED JOHNNY UP I WHISPERED IN HIS EAR, I’LL LIGHTEN YOUR LOAD, PASS THAT BACKPACK HERE. MY SCHOOL'S FULL OF BACKPACKS, NOT ONE IS ALIKE, SO HOW CAN YOU HELP MAKE THESE BACKPACKS LIGHT?

History

In 1997, the Quebec government abolished denominational school boards, adopting linguistic school boards instead.[1] Born out of the Eastern Quebec Regional School Board, Greater Quebec School Board, Mauricie School Board and the Saguenay "P" School Board, it has sprouted from their denominational origins, also incorporating English-language schools from other school boards.

Schools

Central Québec School Board comprises the following schools:

The school board also provides services through its Eastern Québec Learning Centre, which dispenses both adult general education and vocational education at its location in the Sainte-Foy district of Quebec City.[9][10]

School board profile

Enrollment is small comparatively to French-language school boards in the administrative regions where the schools are located; some remote schools have student populations of under 100; the largest schools have nearly 600 students.

Because of the small number of English-speaking students in the area served by the school board, its schools are spread hundreds of kilometres apart. Some schools, as in Jonquière or Valcartier, serve Canadian Forces bases; the school board also has students of the Naskapi Nation in northern Quebec under its care.

The school board holds an annual basketball tournament, which is held at a member school, generally in Quebec City, but at times elsewhere.
