at a crossroads West of Elma you come to what is essentially the middle of nowhere fields and sky meet on the horizon and seemingly go on forever with a gentle breeze that's quite peaceful that is until 10 a.m. when what can only be called organized chaos ensues the this is the Cedar Valley produce auction. from April through October three days a week the bounty of Iowa comes forth. It the sight unlike anything else. that seemed to work getting everybody's for the optimistic one gonna work out here in the middle nowhere It took ahold and our sales have increased every year since we're in operation the Cedar Valley produce action consists of a group up a local growers who saw the need for a wholesale produce auciton to sell fresh fruits vegetables and flowers the idea of a wholesale auction migrated from pennsylvania and found success here in Iowa. According to the organizers the auction creates a fair supply and demand environment. I've done farmers markets for five years ago for quite a few years the marketing part is is fine but basically at the end of the day you're gonna have to go through all your vegetables that didn't sell. The major advantage for me comparing the two is you pick what's ready you bring it to the auction, you unload and you're done you can go home pick some more. Yeah even have some days was not gonna be you don't bring too much over that price but at the end of the day you know you take your averages and that's been working very well for us. Everything is loaded on palets. and the'll line up here and we'll unload everything When it's time to start the auctions, we pick your number. Whatever rows get picked, that's where we start. at you can come even if you're not a wholesale buyer the produce action brings in individuals from across the area who just want to experience the event we can happen as we can and we like to see what's available for sale sometimes we do by produce to put in our freezer but mostly it's like an outing and bring family down when they come to visit so they can see this as I an experience I guess I'm with that quite a bit could you call it organized confusion it everybody has their job a forklift operators obviously are the ones that I had the headache summit you know it only last for a couple hours during the say all they may not be doing too much but then after the sale there you know everything has to go out again it may look like chaos to that folks at on here a lot but guys just kinda the way this off from work yeah one thing is undeniable the effort a organizing for two large operation while sustaining high quality produce creates a unique relationship it helps the local economy and it brings great food closer to your door as somebody couldn't keep up with the quality other basically they're just kinda go by the wayside quality is job that's what's driving the same basically local politician
