Hello my friends welcome to Vagabundeando, the program that take you to funny and entertaining places around Mexico city, and Atlantis image right behind me, we start this trip… ¡¡To wander away!!. Today we are in two sacred places for Mexican wrestling, I´m talking about Arena Coliseo and Arena México; this one known for everybody as “Wrestling Cathedral” located in Doctores neighborhood of México city. The origin of wrestling in Mexico goes back to XIX century during French intervention in 1863. In 1910 during Mexican Revolution arrived an Italian Theater company and its champion Giovanni Relesevitch, in that year one of the main wrestling enterprises from Europe managed by Antonio Fournier showed at Teatro Colón a show-bill “Conde Coma” and “Nabutaka”, this wrestling or rivalry between both enterprises brought on great expectation among the crowd and the business men discovered a profitable business. In 1921 arrived more companies with their stars as Contand Le Marín showed to León Navarro former of Europe, as well as Romanian Sond, among others. Two years later they came back showing on their show-bill the Japanese Kawamula who together with Hercules Sampson played at Fronton México. On September, 1933 Salvador Lutteroth González founded Wrestling Mexican Enterprise, today known as Consejo Mundial de Lucha de Libre (CMLL). It was in 1929 when Salvador Lutterot saw a wrestling show at Liberty Hall del Paso, Texas this event motivated him to performance wrestling shows. To make of this dream Salvador Luttherot was in charge to look for a place to performance this sport show, getting on Mr Lavergne and Fitten box business men of Arena Nacional(National Arena today Chinesse Palace) he didn´t gain any good news. On the other hand there was other precinct Arena Modelo which was in wretched conditions, Salvador Lutterot talked to Manuel Castillo to rent that place. The Arena had to be conditioned but this one didn´t have roof and planks, It must be fixed to performance the opening show of the new Enterprise which wrestled “Chino Achiu” the American Bobby Sampson, the Irish ”Cyclone Mackey” and the Mexican “Yaqui Joe”. It was on September 21, 1933, 20:00 hours, The first wrestling show was performance in Mexico, and Mexican Enterprise of Mexican Wrestling since then millions of people added to the lines of this popular sport. Official sources to the Arena México say that the first shows didn´t attract attention of the crowd therefore Salvador Lutterot made the decision to create a show-bill integrated by foreign such as Ray Ryan. His idea was, to combine national wrestler with foreign ones. Due to notorious convening power of wrestling shows Mr. Salvador made a decision to construct a new place, the old Arena México was demolished on October 7, 1954, to be moved to Doctores neighborhood, this new building will shelter 17 thousand 678 fans on a surface of 12 thousand 500 square meters. All of that under inspection of Distrito Federal Department. On April 27, 1956 it was inaugurated the new Arena México. The printed media opinion didn´t wait such as sport daily “Esto” that say about it “Today open its doors the New Arena México that will be a proud for sporty México… … it will be one of the best shows under dome around the world. Capacity over 20 thousand viewers, the new Arena México was constructed using new technical advances in the topic and it can assure all tickets will be sold out”. The next year of Arena Mexico´s inauguration the fortune smiled to Mr Salvador Lutteroth but his lottery ticket 4242 was prizewinner with 40 thousand pesos. Then it started between decades of 40´s and 50´s the boom of modern Mexican wrestling. So it is friends, Mr.Salvador Lutteroth used the money to construct other place, The famous Arena Coliseo inaugurated on April 2, 1943. Great encounters took place here as Balck Shadow vs Santo “el enmascarado de plata” (the silver masked), they wrestled for the masks, hundreds of people attended. It´s time for the break, I´ll talk you about Santo´s legend known as the Enmascarado de Plata (silver masked), so we´ll be right back! As I told you before the break Santo the silver masked whose name Rodolfo Gúzman Huerta was born on September 23, 1917 being fifth one of seven brothers. Rodolfo persevered to get a place within wrestling’s show bills using nicknames as “El Rudy”, “Hombre Rojo”, “el murciélago II” y “Demonio Negro”. Rodolfo got his famous name by petition of star referee of Mexican Enterprise of Wrestling today (CMLL) Jesus Lomelí, who gave him to choice several names as el diablo, el ángel y el santo; choosing the last one. Making himself the mask with only 7 pesos, the material was pig leather, it says “that was very warm”. His great premiere was on July 26, 1942, facing to Lobo Negro. El enmascarado de plata along of his career gained several victories as welter weight champion, midi weight, heavy weight, worldwide midi weight, being a very gifted wrestler immortalized many wrestling moves among which “la de a caballo” y “la descorchadora”. Among Santo´s encounters we can say, the one what faced against Black Shadow a hard-fought battle which Santo won to submit Black Shadow with his famous wrestling move called as “La Rana”. It was such popularity Santo gained that soon was catalogued as justice defender, staring a weekly comic book starting to bring out on October, 1951 adding the name “El enmascarado de Plata”. It was wrestling against zombies, vampire women, female werewolf, and whoever would do the evil, El Santo sets as national hero that missed in collective imaginary. This remarkable character during 50 years of career has participated over 10 battles, defeated hundreds of wrestlers that dared to defy him. The man behind the mask who gave life to Santo, Rodolfo Gúzman Huerta left this world on February 5, 1984. I must tell you there were other greatest legends of Mexican wrestling such as Blue Demon, Mil Mascaras and Huracán Ramírez all o f them recognized and adored around the world. What do you think about Wrestlin Cathedral, I´m talking about Arena México, interesting doesn´t it? But it´s time to go to other one Arena Coliseo, don´t go away, we´ll be right back! The construction of Arena Coliseo before called it Arena México started in 1938 in Lagunilla neighborhood. On Friday April 2, 1943 was the premiere, eight wrestling, six o f them no time limit. So my friends, we are with Guerrero Maya Jr. one of the great stars of CMLL, thank you so much, to grant us this few minutes, we know you are exhausted, ¿How did the idea rise to be wrestler? It rose by pure hobby since I was a kid, I came to Arena Coliseo and Arena México my parents took me, in those time there was Arena Pista Revolución, it was pure emotion. Someday I found wrestling gym, I started to train, so since then; I have been a wrestler by 9 years, I started when I was 14 years, now I´m 28 years old. Very good! ¿Can you tell us what you inspired to create your mask? This character is the sequence of a wrestler called “Guerrero Maya” I´m the Junior version. In the 90´s there was in the CMLL the Guerrero Maya, and he used the same image like me that´s why I continue with his legacy. Very Well! ¿Which have your achievements been? I have many achievements such as Black Terry´s hair, Cyborg´s hair, I have been trio national champion with Atlantis and Delta, Welter champion and I have fought for many championships and Alex Segura´s hair; many satisfactions. Greatest stars don´t they? Which are the sacrifices that you have done in these 9 years of career? I think like each profession, you have sacrifices, but for me it´s not like that because I love my profession what I do. It´s a process that I must follow to keep on developing myself. To train at the gym and the Arena, on weekends I cannot be with my family, so these processes will give me many satisfactions. Of course you´re right! For all our friends want to be wrestlers, ¿What would you recommend them? For being wrestler and each profession, to be eager to do whatever you want, never hesitate, never stop to dream of. You have to fight for dreams never give up. This is the goal not only as a wrestler, if you have goals you can do it. So thank so much Guerrero Maya for this interview, but you, don´t go away, we´re still by the arena in CMLL, we continue… The Arena Coliseo has 5 400 tickets, the assistance per month is 5 000 persons. The main event was Carlos “El tarzan” López vs. the sensation rookie el Santo in the evil alignment. They wrestled for midi weight championship in hands of Tarzan. Currently the Arena México feats greatest as Atlantis, Blue Panther, Mistico the new age, and Ultimo Guerrero. In the new century on March 17, 2000 the Mexican wrestling cathedral was eyewitness of an unforgettable duel, a wrestling Mask vs. Mask, between Atlantis and the Villano III an exciting and thrilling battle of wrestling talent. The past September 13, The Arena México celebrated its LVXXX anniversary with all tickets sold out to enjoy a battle Averno vs. Blue Panther, for closing with an epic duel La Sombra and Volador Jr. Like this the Arena México has seen to parade greatest characters and their masks and outfits, which their amazing wrestling moves and incredible flying have astonished all audiences of many ages, no matter their alignment evil or good. So my friends that´s all for today, I hope you´ve enjoyed this trip by Mexican wrestling as me. Background

Arena México, CMLL's main venue and location of the Anniversary Show

The Mexican Lucha libre (professional wrestling) company Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) started out under the name Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre ("Mexican Wrestling Company"; EMLL), founded by Salvador Lutteroth in 1933. Lutteroth, inspired by professional wrestling shows he had attended in Texas, decided to become a wrestling promoter and held his first show on September 21, 1933, marking what would be the beginning of organized professional wrestling in Mexico.[3] Lutteroth would later become known as "the father of Lucha Libre" .[4] A year later EMLL held the EMLL 1st Anniversary Show, starting the annual tradition of the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre Anniversary Shows that have been held each year ever since, most commonly in September.[5]

Over the years the anniversary show would become the biggest show of the year for CMLL, akin to the Super Bowl for the National Football League (NFL) or WWE's WrestleMania event.[3][6] The first anniversary show was held in Arena Modelo, which Lutteroth had bought after starting EMLL. In 1942–43 Lutteroth financed the construction of Arena Coliseo, which opened in April 1943. The EMLL 10th Anniversary Show was the first of the anniversary shows to be held in Arena Coliseo.[5] In 1956 Lutteroth had Arena México built in the location of the original Arena Modelo, making Arena México the main venue of EMLL from that point on.[5] Starting with the EMLL 23rd Anniversary Show, all anniversary shows except for the EMLL 46th Anniversary Show have been held in the arena that would become known as "The Cathedral of Lucha Libre".[5] On occasion EMLL held more than one show labelled as their "Anniversary" show, such as two 33rd Anniversary Shows in 1966.[5] Over time the anniversary show series became the oldest, longest-running annual professional wrestling show. In comparison, WWE's WrestleMania is only the fourth oldest still promoted show (CMLL's Arena Coliseo Anniversary Show and Arena México anniversary shows being second and third).[3][5][2] EMLL was supposed to hold the EMLL 52nd Anniversary Show on September 20, 1985 but Mexico City was hit by a magnitude 8.0 earthquake. EMLL canceled the event both because of the general devastation but also over fears that Arena México might not be structurally sound after the earthquake.[5][7]

When Jim Crockett Promotions was bought by Ted Turner in 1988 EMLL became the oldest still active promotion in the world.[6] In 1991 EMLL was rebranded as "Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre" and thus held the CMLL 59th Anniversary Show, the first under the new name, on September 18, 1992.[5] Traditionally CMLL holds their major events on Friday Nights, replacing their regularly scheduled Super Viernes show.[2]

Storylines

Villano V, who risked his mask on the outcome of the main event

The event featured six professional wrestling matches with different wrestlers involved in pre-existing scripted feuds, plots and storylines. Wrestlers were portrayed as either heels (referred to as rudos in Mexico, those that portray the "bad guys") or faces (técnicos in Mexico, the "good guy" characters) as they followed a series of tension-building events, which culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches.[2]

Due to an injury CMLL's most popular tecnico Místico was not booked to wrestle on the show, only appearing as the corner man for Blue Panther in the main event. Panther's opponent Villano V would be accompanied by Perro Aguayo Jr., Místico's longtime rival. With Místico's injury CMLL was not able to book a match for the CMLL World Tag Team Championship despite repeated challenges by La Peste Negra (Negro Casas teaming with either Heavy Metal or Mr. Niebla). Instead they announced that Mr. Niebla and Heavy Metal would team up with Lizmark Jr. to face half of the tag team champions, Héctor Garza, teaming with Dos Caras Jr. and Marco Corleone in the third match of the night.[8]
