♪ upbeat music ♪ Amy Hurst: There she is. Oh my gosh this is so awesome. ♪ KU fight song ♪ Amy Hurst: My name is Amy Hurst and Baby Jay was my idea. I remember sitting down with Dick Wintermote, president of the Alumni Association, and I pitched the idea to him and I'm sure he never thought he would see me again and he said, "Sure fine." But he did say that the university can't fund this. So I went home after my freshman year and sat at the dinner table my first night back in Ohio and when my parents asked me what I was going to do that summer, I said, "Well this is what I want to do," and I pitched them the idea of building a Baby Jay and oh my gosh I hadn't even finished the pitch and my dad was up, my mom, and everybody. They were just so excited. We wrapped her up in some trash liners and strapped her on to the roof of the family station wagon. I remember sitting down with Dick Wintermote and he was saying, "Well ok you've gotten this far. How do you envision us introducing this to the university?" And I said, "Well clearly I have to hatch out of an egg." My first realization that I'm actually hatching was when they lifted the lid and cracked the egg and there I was. When I did step out, I did remember the collective awe, or the astonishment of all of the people in the stands. It was the "ah-ha" Jayhawk moment. Wow! We really pulled this off. (voice off-camera) If you were to be able to say something to Baby Jay, what would you say to Baby Jay? Amy: I would say I miss hanging out with him/her... Ohhh! Baby Jay! Oh my goodness! What a treat! I'm your biggest fan.
