Baghaichhari (Bengali: বাঘাইছড়ি) is an upazila of Rangamati District in the division of Chittagong, Bangladesh.[1]

Geography

Baghaichhari is located at 23°09′00″N 92°11′30″E / 23.1500°N 92.1917°E / 23.1500; 92.1917. It has a total area of 1931.25 km2. It is bordered by Khagrachhari district to the west, the Indian state of Tripura to the north, Mizoram (India) to the east and Barkal and Langadu upazilas to the south.

As of the 2011 Bangladeshi census, Bagaichhari upazila had 20,171 households and a population of 96,899. 24,183 (24.96%) were under 10 years of age. Bagaichhari had an average literacy rate of 41.9%, compared to the national average of 51.8%, and a sex ratio of 915 females per 1000 males. 19,875 (20.51%) of the population lived in urban areas.[2] The ethnic population was 72,837 (75.17%), of which Chakma were 67,279.[3]

Administration

Baghaichari Upazila is divided into Baghaichari Municipality and eight union parishads: Amtali, Baghaichari, Bongoltali, Khedarmara, Marisha, Rupokari, Sajek, and Sharoyatali. The union parishads are subdivided into 19 mauzas and 303 villages.[4]

Baghaichari Municipality is subdivided into 9 wards and 14 mahallas.[2]
