Asalamu alaikum warahmatoAllahi wabarakatoho Quran Weekly. This is your brother Omar Suleiman. Today inshaAllah we'll continue to talk about the Superstar series. Last week we talked about Talha ibn UbaidAllah radiaAllahu 'anhu and we said that there is a name that is almost always associated with Talha radiyaAllahu 'anhu. And that is the name of Az-Zubair ibn Awwam radiyaAllahu 'anhu. Part of that reason was because he was related to Talha, because he was the son of Al-Awwam ibn Khuwaylid, who was the younger brother of Nawfal ibn Khuwaylid and who passed away at a very young age. So the person that would actually raise him was Nawfal, the half brother of Khadija radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anha, who happened to be the same person that tortured Talha radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu. Also, his mother was Safiyya, the aunt of the Prophet (SAWS) so that made him a first cousin of the Prophet (SAWS). But when he accepted Islam, he was very young. He was only 12 years old. So Nawfal took full advantage of this child and Nawfal used to torture him so severely, he would wrap him up in a mat every single day and he would suffocate him with smoke. And every single night the people of Mecca could hear the screams of Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu, this 12 year old child that was being tortured for the sake of Allah. Now Az-Zubair, and Ali and Talha, may Allah be pleased with them all, became sort of like a trio of children surrounding the Prophet (SAWS). And Az-Zubair had this certain type of courage. Now imagine when we are talking about the persecution of a 20 year old, or we are talking about the persecution of a 30 year old, that is much different than talking about the persecution of a 12 year old who bears that with bravery and courage. And in fact one time he even heard that the Prophet (SAWS) was being attacked. So he took his sword and he ran to the Prophet (SAWS) and the Prophet (SAWS) said, "What are you doing?" He said, "Ya rasool Allah I heard that you were being attacked." So the Prophet (SAWS) asked, "So what were you going to do then? He said, "I was going to strike the one that was attacking you." So this became, as the scholars said, the first sword drawn fee sabeel Allah (in the way or for the sake of Allah). So we have this young boy that truly loved the Messenger (SAWS), that had this special quality of courage and bravery. In the battle of Badr, he earned a special title. He was one of the 2 people that had horses. So the Prophet (SAWS) only had 2 horsemen, whereas Quraish had 300 horsemen against the Muslims. One of them was Az-Zubair, radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu. He learned a special talent. Basically, he had the skill of being able to fight with 2 swords while controlling the horse just with his legs. And on that day, he worse a yellow turban and he fought so bravely that Allah (SWT) honored him with something that no other man had been honored with. When Allah says that on the day of Badr he sent 3000 of the angels to fight alongside the Muslims, Allah (SWT) sent those angels all imitating and following Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu, as the Prophet (SAWS) informed us that they were all wearing yellow turbans in following Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu. So can you imagine this man, this young man, was being followed by 3000 angels even in his dress, radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu. Also, in the battle of Uhud, there was a man by the name of Talha ibn Abi Talha Al-'Andari. Talha ibn Abi Talha, not Talha in UbaidAllah, was from the army of the mushrikeen and he had the best horse that belonged to the mushrikeen. On top of that, he was known for being a fierce warrior. So he called out the Muslims several times before the battle of Uhud started. And Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu 'anhu insisted that he would fight him and so he went forth. And Safiyya, the mother of Az-Zubair, she went to the Prophet (SAWS) and said, "He's going to kill my son." And the Prophet (SAWS) said, "No no no. Az-Zubair will kill him inshaAllah." And Az-Zubair was a very special warrior. Ali radiyaAllahu 'anhu says about Az-Zubair, "يغضب كالنمر" [Yaghdabo kal nimr]- he gets angry like a tiger, and then he attacks the way a lion would attack. So he says that Az-Zubair walked up to Talha ibn Abi Talha Al-'Andari, he put down his sword, he climbed the best horse that belonged to the mushrikeen, he took his sword and he killed him with his sword. Then he threw him off and brought the horse back for the use of the Muslims in the battle of Uhud. So we are talking about a fierce and courageous and brave warrior in Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu. In fact, he always served next to the Prophet (SAWS), he played a key role under Abu Bakr radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu in the battle against Musaylama, the false Prophet. He played a key role in some of the conquests that took place at the time of 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu and in the time of 'Uthman radiyaAllah ta'ala 'anhu. He also had something very special happen to him. When the Muslims first moved to Madinah, when the hijra took place, some of the people said that the Muslims would not be able to bear children. So Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu was married to Asma bint Abi Bakr, radiyaAllahu 'anha w 'an waalidiha, may Allah (SWT) be pleased with her and her father. And Asma radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anha would be the first woman to give birth 3 months after the hijra when the Muslims thought that they were cursed. She gave birth to Abdullah ibn Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu, the first child that was born after the hijra. Now Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu, he says about himself, he says that Talha used to name all of his children after Prophets. I named all of my children after shuhadaa, after the martyrs. So he named Abdullah ibn Az-Zubair after Abdullah ibn Jahsh. He named 'Urwa after 'Urwa ibn Masoud. So he would name his children after martyrs. And subhanAllah this quality of bravery and courageousness it stayed with him throughout his entire life. Unfortunately he was also amongst the people who were sucked into that fitna that took place after the death of 'Uthman radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu. He wanted the blood of 'Uthman radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu to be avenged so he was with Aisha radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anha and Talha radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu in demanding the killers of 'Uthman radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu be pursued. And as we mentioned with Talha radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu, both Ali and Aisha, may Allah be pleased with them, agreed upon this. And Ali radiyaAllahu 'anhu in fact reminded Az-Zubair of an incident that took place in the time of the Prophet (SAWS). Rasool Allah once saw Az-Zubair and Ali together. As we mentioned these 3 were a trio in the early days of Islam. So he mentioned to Ali and Az-Zubair when they were together and he asked Az-Zubair "Do you love Ali?" And Az-Zubair said, "Of course I love Ali." And the Prophet (SAWS) said, "تقاتله وأنت ظالم" [Tuqaatilho w ant thaalim]- You will fight him and you will be the transgressor in that case. Now does that mean the Zubair became a kaafir? Does that mean Zubair, radiyAllahu 'anhu, was a thaalim oppressor in his nature? No because if that was the case, the Prophet (SAWS) would not have said that they are my neighbors in Jannah. The Prophet (SAWS) would not have said at the end of his life that I am pleased with Talha and Az-Zubair along with the other 10 promised paradise. But the Prophet (SAWS) was saying when that time comes you should relinquish your cause and you should leave that cause. So Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu was standing infront of Ali radiyaAllahu 'anhu and 'Ali reminded him of that incident and Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu actually gave Ali bay'a, gave him allegiance, and then the left the battlefield but he was pursued by one of the khawaarij by the name of 'Amr ibn Jarmooz who pursued Az-Zubair and he asked Az-Zubair and said that I want your companionship, I just want to travel with you. So Az-Zubair allowed him to come with him and be his companion. So when the time of salaat al-Asr came, Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu went and made wudu. And 'Amr ibn Jarmooz, he made the iqaama. When Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu started his salaah, 'Amr ibn Jarmooz attacked him and he mutilated him. And he thought that he was going to be pleasing 'Ali radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu. He thought that he was going to be rewarded. So he took the limbs and the sword of Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu and he took them to the tent of Ali. And when he wanted to enter into the tent of 'Ali radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu the guards told him not to come in. He gave his sword to the guards of 'Ali who took the sword of Az-Zubair to 'Ali radiyaAllahu 'anhu and 'Ali radiyaAllau 'anhu started to cry. And he said, "I heard the Prophet (SAWS) say, "بشروا قاتل إبن صفية بالنار" [bashiroo qaatil ibn Safiyyah bil naar] - if you see the murderer of ibn Saffiyyah, Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu, give him the tidings, or give him the news that he is of the hell fire. So he started to yell. 'Ali radiyaAllahu 'anhu started to yell, "بشروا قاتل إبن صفية بالنار" [bashiroo qaatil ibn Safiyyah bil naar]- tell the one that murdered Az-Zubair that he is going to hellfire. And when 'Ali came out, Amr ibn Jarmooz had already run away and he had committed suicide, subhanAllah. Now that is a very very sad ending to his life. But there is something that is very significant here that some of the historians pointed out with Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu. Now if you look at the lives of his children, Abdullah and 'Urwa, may Allah be pleased with them both, both of them died in their salah. Both of them died in their salah. And you see Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu also died in his salah. So what does this show you? The courage that Az-Zubair had was not from arrogance, was not from pride. But rather the pride was in Allah (SWT). He loved Allah (SWT). This courage was coming from his belief in Allah (SWT). And that is why Az-Zubair radiyaAllahu ta'ala 'anhu was given the honor of dying in his salaah as were his children, radiyaAllahu 'anhuma. So I ask you, what kind of courage do you have? How much do you love Allah (SWT)? Whenever you feel like you're being humiliated, or embarrassed or awkward because of your Islam, shy to say Asalamu alaikum in public, may be pulled over by TSA for an extra random search, how do you feel? Do you feel proud to be a Muslim and do you love Allah (SWT)? Do you have only fear of Allah (SWT)? We ask Allah (SWT) to grant us that same courage coupled with humility to Allah (SWT). And we ask Allah (SWT) to make us from the righteous and to join us with Talha and Az-Zubair, the neighbors of the Prophet (SAWS), and the Prophet (SAWS) in the highest level of jannah, jannatul firdaous. Allahumma ameen. jazakomAllahu khayran. I'll see you next week. wasalamu alaikum warahmatoAllahu wabarakatoho.
