In 2019 Aprilia decides to present at the show of EICMA 2019 two prototypes of sports averages, the RS 660 and the Thunder 660: two motorcycles designed to fill a void in the catalog of the house of Noale and thus be able to compete with Japanese companies in the medium displacement motorcycle sector. Designed as a smaller version of the new RSV4 1100, it shares its line and chassis, the result of a project born in Piaggio Group Style Center.[2][3]

The engine, a 659 cm³ twin-cylinder with distribution a double camshaft on the head and connecting rod pins at 270°, is capable of delivering 100 HP of power maximum at 10500 rpm and 67 Nm of couple at 8500 rpm. The frame is in aluminum double beam for a total weight of the entire motorcycle of 169 kg dry, him shock absorbers they are both adjustable with one fork with 41 mm inverted stems Kayaba on the front. Electronics is entrusted to Marelli which dedicated the APRC system to sports, which gives it 5 delivery settings, traction control on 8 levels, ABS cornering, 3 engine brake levels, anti-skating and gas ride-by-wire.[4]

In spring 2022 the Factory version was introduced, which brings a technical update.[5]

At the end of the year a version called is presented RS 660 Extrema, with devices and calibrations of the chassis for track use and various lightening with the use of carbon parts, reducing the weight to 166 kg.[6]
