Transcription
>> Applied Geography is the study of the spatial patterns and movements of phenomenon in the world around us. >> The course includes a lot of ecology, law and planning, so it’s quite a broad course, and GIS which is basically like doing digital cartography, so digital map making, like Google Earth. >> There’s a lot of practical experience involved with our course, we do a lot of field work, visiting many parts of the coast line and we also visit the New Forest, which is another brilliant resource. But also at the University, we do a lot of lab based work, ArcGIS based work, so overall we do a lot of practical work. Over the summer of our first and second, we carried out summer placements, which were a massive benefit in terms of our future careers and also our ongoing studies. >> Our placement scheme works extremely well, we have had some fantastic success stories in the past where students have found a really good placement and have been taken on part-time for the remainder of their degree, in fact they came to graduation and their employee said “well what are you doing Monday?” and it’s ended up as their permanent full-time job. >> For my second placement I got to work at Rothamsted Research Centre, which was a massive boost and gave me the guidance towards what I actually wanted to be doing. I got the chance to do a collaborative dissertation and at the end of my placement I got offered a two year contract which continues when I graduate, which is great. >> The facilities here are actually very good. We have two GIS Labs, we’ve also got a lot of practical equipment such as total stations, laser scanners, actually at Bournemouth University, something a lot of universities won’t have is we have SmartNET Technology, which is the latest in GIS. >> Staff on Applied Geography come from a broad range of backgrounds. Common themes amongst them are their expertise in Geographic Information Systems and satellite remote sensing. Our staff have worked in various organisations in the commercial sector and in the government sector, both here and overseas before coming to Bournemouth University. >> Students doing Geography could actually have a broad range of career options. You can go into planning, teaching obviously, environmental management plans which is what I am hoping to go into, it’s so broad it just depends on what you decide to specialise in. >> Geographers should come here to do our degree because of its unique nature as Applied Geography and what goes hand in hand with that is the experience of our staff in using Geography in real world situations. >> You should come to Bournemouth University to study Geography because we are on the Jurassic Coast, you practical skills which appeal to employers, Bournemouth is a great place to live if you‘re into surfing and being outdoors. What more could you want?
