Anwesha is the annual cultural festival of Indian Institute of Technology Patna. It is a three-day-long event usually held towards the end of January every year.[1]

The fest hosts cultural, literary, ecological and management events.[2][3][4] The first edition of Anwesha took place in 2008.[5] It draws a footfall of about 35,000 from more than 200 colleges across the country.[6]

Management events such as Stock Mart, B-quiz, Vendre and ecological events like Eco-debate, Green quiz give participants ample scope to showcase their talents. Anwesha enjoys a cult status among the youths of Bihar. Eminent personalities such as chief minister Nitish Kumar, Padma Vibhushan, G. Madhavan Nair, Ravindra Kumar Sinha (the Dolphin Man of India), have been part of Anwesha in the past.

The theme for the 2023 edition of the festival was The Isles of Utopia.

Introduction

Anwesha ( Motto: Think. Dream. Live. ) is the Annual Cultural-Management Fest of Indian Institute of Technology Patna. Witnessing an ever-increasing footfall of nearly 35,000 from more than 200 colleges across the country, it has evolved into one of the most prominent extravaganzas in North-East India. Anwesha, which began its first edition in 2008, is a multi-faceted festival hosting cultural, literary, ecological, and management events.

At the fest, students hailing from IIT Patna and various colleges across the nation participate in numerous social and cultural activities. The spectrum of events encompasses various categories such as dance, music, drama, photography, literature, quizzes, food festivals, and fine arts and received ton of participation.

Anwesha conducts a series of events and campaigns both in and out of the host university before culminating in a 3-day grand fiesta usually towards spring. Eminent personalities such as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Padma Vibhushan G. Madhavan Nair, Ravindra Kumar Sinha (The Dolphin Man of India) along with musical luminaries like Swarathma, The Local Train, and the Late Legend KK have been part of previous editions. Last year’s extravaganza saw the performances of the renowned pop rock band “Sanam” and EDM DJ Aerreo.

Last year’s gala centered around the theme "Isles of Utopia.”[7]

History/Inception and Growth

In 2010, Anwesha made its grand debut, marking the initiation of a remarkable journey that has since unfolded with resounding success. Over the years, the festival has not only become a staple in the academic calendar but has also evolved into a sprawling spectacle that captures the hearts and minds of thousands of students annually. The extensive reach of Anwesha is evident in the enthusiastic participation it garners from esteemed colleges across the nation, solidifying its position as a premier platform for cultural and artistic expression.

For more than a decade, Anwesha has been at the forefront of hosting a myriad of events that transcend the conventional boundaries of artistic expression. From the eloquence of literary arts to the electrifying performances of the stage in performing arts, the festival has been a melting pot of creativity and talent. The diversity of events has not only enriched the cultural landscape but has also provided a unique space for students to showcase their multifaceted talents.

As Anwesha enters each successive year, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of creativity, collaboration, and celebration. The organizers' unwavering commitment to fostering a platform that transcends artistic boundaries has undoubtedly contributed to the festival's decade-long success story. The history of Anwesha is not just a chronicle of events; it is a narrative of inspiration, innovation, and the indomitable spirit of the creative community.

Events

Over the years, pro-nights have starred various artists, rock bands and personalities. These have included the rock bands Sifar (2011),[citation needed] Swarathma (2015)[citation needed] and Euphoria (2016),[8] together with classical music performances from the likes of Kamala Shankar (2012) and Priya Venkataraman (2013).[9] The most famous poet Dr. Kumar Vishwas performed in 2012.[citation needed]

Other attendees have included an audience with Miss India International 2013 Gurleen Grewal (2014)[10] and Miss India Earth 2013 Sobhita Dhulipala (2015).[citation needed]

  • Pre Anwesha

Before the final 3-day extravaganza, the Anwesha team conducts various events such as Garba nights, Halloween celebrations, Christmas and new year parties, throughout the year to keep the exuberance of its participants high and promote engagement.

Some events conducted are:

1.Flash Mobs

Organized in shopping malls and public gatherings, Flash Mobs become a powerful street spectacle, attracting media attention in Patna.

2.Garba Night

Witnessing enthusiastic participation from various institutions, including AIIMS Patna, NIT Patna, Patna Women’s College, and NIFT, Garba Night draws a promising footfall of more than 4K.

3.City Rush

Offering a real-life uncharted experience and an on-ground opportunity to be a treasure hunter, City Rush creates a golden opportunity for city-wide marketing with active public inclusion.

  • Multicity Auditions

The multi-city auditions for talent search occur throughout various metropolitans, including cities like Dhanbad, Allahabad, Patna, Kanpur, Lucknow, Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore, and Varanasi. Moreover, Anwesha has been expanding its influence by adding even more cities to the list viz. Mumbai, and Noida. The one-day-long auditions comprise various cultural competitions and events varying from dance to drama, music to art, and much more. Earlier editions have seen performances judged by a panel of esteemed jury members working in their specific industry.

The winners are awarded prizes, certificates, and goodies and are given a chance to perform in the main fest alongside leading dignitaries. Winners also get a chance to interact with many talented and accomplished dignitaries during the fest.

  • Campus Ambassador Program

Introduced in 2014 as an attempt to expand the audience base, The CA program seeks students from various colleges and has them collaborate with the Anwesha team to garner experience and promote the fest in their colleges and communities. Additionally, the ambassadors help out with marketing programs for their target demography by suggesting feasible events, workshops, and initiatives. In return, perks like free tickets, certificates, and goodies are awarded from Anwesha.

  • Alumni Engagement Program

Anwesha is a legacy carried on from one batch to the other and so Anwesha team keeps in touch with its previous organizers and their college seniors to seek guidance and help for the fest. For that, it organizes special meetings in tech hubs like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Gurgaon, etc.

Social Initiatives

  • Meal For Smile

Meal for Smile was Anwesha's hunger eradication drive. Under this campaign, Anwesha hosts free meals and distributes them to those in need.

  • Flash Mob

Anwesha plans the sudden flash mob performances at most unexpected places like malls, roads and railway stations. Though this it channels the awareness in most interesting way on various social concerns.

  • Nukkad Naataks

Anwesha organizes several nukkad nattaks on various locations every year where it presents the social problems live and suggest a solution to create social awareness.

  • Children’s Day celebration in Slum areas

Team Anwesha collaborated with ABL JIO Natural Academy, a part of Prayas Bharti Trust, to make a difference. Anwesha T-Shirts, chocolates, were distributed among children. Awareness regarding importance of education was raised in slum areas.

  • Collaboration with NSS
  • Prayaas : A joint initiative from Anwesha and National Service Scheme that aimed to help underprivileged children by providing them with basic necessities like food, shelter, and education. Started in 2019, the campaign held book and cloth collection drives among other capacity building activities for the indigent sections of society.
  • Breaking the Silence: Empowering girls with importance of Menstrual Health : Anwesha’s Menstruation Awareness Event was a successful initiative organized in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS), aimed at educating, empowering, and supporting girls in overcoming the challenges associated with menstruation. The event, held to ensure that no girl is hindered in pursuing education or opportunities, included a range of impactful activities.

Structure

Anwesha is an entirely student-run non-profit organization composed of students from over 10 departments selected through several rounds of interviews and appraisal of work history.

The entire team is divided into committees -

Events :The events committee is a group responsible for planning, organizing, and executing the various activities and programs that make up the core experience of the event. This committee plays a central role in curating an engaging and diverse lineup of entertainment and attractions for festival attendees.

Sponsorship and Marketing: The sponsorship committee of a festival plays a crucial role in securing financial support, resources, and partnerships from corporate entities and organizations. The sponsorship committee's effectiveness can significantly impact the success of the festival by securing necessary funding and resources while also enhancing the festival's overall experience and reach.

Media and Public relations: The MPR (Media and Public Relations) committee is tasked with formulating and implementing an extensive publicity strategy aimed at promoting the festival. This strategy involves leveraging a variety of media channels, including print, electronic, and digital media, to enhance awareness and generate interest in the event. Furthermore, the MPR teams are responsible for the management of the festival's social media accounts, actively engaging with the audience, disseminating timely updates, and fostering anticipation.

Web & App : The Web and App Development Committee within a festival is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the festival's online presence, including websites and mobile applications. This committee plays a crucial role in ensuring that attendees and participants have access to up-to-date and user-friendly information about the festival.

Hospitality : The Hospitality Committee within the context of a festival is a dedicated group responsible for providing a welcoming and comfortable environment for attendees, guests, and participants. This committee plays a vital role in ensuring a positive festival experience for all.

Each committee further consists of a panel of Coordinators from the Junior Year followed by a group of Sub-Coordinators from the Sophomore Year.

First Years form the Volunteers team where they get introduced to various aspects of event management. The Previous Year’s Core Team act as an Advisory Committee and are responsible for guidance and support over important issues.

The Fest Coordinator ( or FC ) from the Junior Year is the overall in-charge and is responsible for gluing together all the committees.

Media, Publicity and Sponsors

Anwesha, one of India's prominent college festivals, has successfully secured sponsorships from various corporate entities, a testament to its extensive student participation from across the country. Over the years, the extravaganza has been sponsored by notable brands such as Coca-Cola, Pizza Hut, Monginis, The Chocolate Room, Frytos, and others. Corporate giants like Indian Oil, State Bank of India, Union Bank, Decathlon, UltraTech, among many others, have also contributed to the success of Anwesha.

Renowned for its vast student participation and diverse cultural events, Anwesha has achieved widespread publicity and media coverage. Leading newspapers like The Times of India, Dainik Bhaskar, Jagran, and various local dailies regularly cover Anwesha's cultural events throughout the year. In the electronic media landscape, the festival is featured on platforms such as Red FM, Radio Mirchi, Patna Beats, and various local television and digital platforms.

Anwesha 2023: Isles of Utopia

Anwesha'23, the annual cultural fest of the Indian Institute of Technology, Patna, took place from March 17 to March 19, 2023.

Day 1:

The inaugural day of Anwesha'23, held on March 17, 2023, marked the commencement of the festival with the presence of esteemed dignitaries. Notable figures, including Padma Shri Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Padma Shri Swami GCD Bharti, contributed to the event's grandeur. Adding an artistic touch, classical dancer Padma Shri Vidushi Shovana Narayann graced the occasion.

Day 1 featured a diverse array of captivating events. The dance competition, "Heel Turn," was adjudicated by Mr. Akshit Juyal, while the musical extravaganza, "Syngphony," saw judgment by Mr. Swastik. Participants engaged in intellectually stimulating quizzes and experienced a theatrix workshop conducted by Mr. Tarun Kohli, offering insights into the realm of psycho-physical theatre.

Day 2:

The second day of Anwesha'23, held on March 18, 2023, commenced with a distinguished guest lecture by BJP Lok Sabha Member of Parliament, Mr. Jayant Sinha. Renowned for his significant contributions to India's growth, he shared valuable insights, setting a thoughtful tone for the day's proceedings.

Prominent events included the "Ekal" monoact competition, adjudicated by Mr. Tarun Kohli, and the entertaining "Not So Lame Quiz." The band competition, "Satanz Tantrum," was judged by Neptune. The day also featured a graffiti workshop by Jaxxer, an animecon with elements of cosplay and quizzes, as well as legacy events such as Verve and Mr/Ms Anwesha, with judging conducted by Aashna Malani.

The day concluded with an electrifying EDM night featuring DJ Aerreo, marking the culmination of a successful day of celebrations during Anwesha'23.

Day 3:

The final day of Anwesha'23, held on March 19, 2023, commenced with an insightful guest lecture by IPS Vikas Vaibhav, inspiring the audience with his wisdom. A series of engaging events unfolded throughout the day, including the impactful street play "Maidan-e-Jung," which was adjudicated by Mr. Tarun Kohli. Participants also took part in a dance workshop led by Mr. Akshit Juyal, and the Bespoke event, judged by Dr. Ajay Kumar. Intellectual stimulation was heightened through a slam poetry competition and "The Moveable Feast" quiz.

The day concluded with a thrilling pronite sponsored by Coca-Cola, featuring electrifying performances by the Trap band and Sanam, leaving everyone in high spirits. This marked a memorable end to Anwesha'23, a day filled with cultural vibrancy, artistic expression, and intellectual engagement.
