Adam Richards: Leading the Hybrid Vehicle Team
Transcription
Adam Richards: Leading the Hybrid Vehicle Team >>Richards: As a freshman, I didn't really know what I wanted to do. >>Richards: I was always screwing around with stuff, so I knew engineering would be good for me. >>Richards: Oh, a jaywalker, huh? It's efficient! [background music starts] >>Richards: I like the whole green automotive field. >>Richards: I like the way it's sort of progressive, always changing -- good area to get into right now. >>Richards: When you're having the experience where you sit down in an interview and you just start talking about the projects you've worked on? and you start realizing, like, you know, what you've done in school is pretty similar to the things that they're doing at their company. >>Richards: You've already done it! >>Richards: I've had the engine running before; it's just never *in* the car, so it's not officially like a full car yet. [music pauses] >>Richards: [beep] A pass to get in here. All right. >>Richards: This is our eco-car project. OK, so, welcome to the shop. >>Richards: It's home to six different auto shop teams. >>Richards: My team is the hybrid vehicle team. >>Richards: So, let's go check out the car some. See what they've done. >>Richards: [aside] Hey, Micah. >>Richards: [laughs] Hey, OK, we're still missing the steering wheel. All right. >>Bower: The people on the team really wanted Adam to be the team leader. >>Bower: And so Adam's really filled that role. >>Bower: But he's making sure everybody's on the right page, and that each party is aware of what everybody else is doing. >>Richards: Let's see what they're up to. >>Richards: They run a competition every three years, three to four years. >>Richards: This is the brand-new one we're on right now. >>Richards: We're actually in year two. >>Richards: This car here took second place overall at a seven-team competition of teams. [background music starts] >>Richards: The car before that won, took first place, you know, straight, all four years in a row. >>Richards: Beat every single competition, blew them away. >>Richards: Oh. Yeah, do it. >>Richards: I want to get a job where I'm going to be interested in what I do. >>Richards: Something that's going to, you know, to actually have a purpose. >>Richards: [in car] And we're off! >>Richards: At UW, we really learn the skill set to go off and make the world a better place. >>Richards: That's really what I've learned here in Madison. Cars
Nissan Cefiro A31
Adam started in the D1NZ series using a modified Nissan Cefiro with camouflage coloured paint by Steven Sole Customs. Not Stickers. He swapped the standard engine with a RB26DET from a Nissan Skyline GT-R to increase the power output. This helped him to get a spot on the podium in four out of the six rounds of 2005.[1] Adam stopped using this car competitively after the first round of D1NZ 2006, making way for a sponsored Nissan Silvia.
The Cefiro made a return in round 3 of Drift Revolution 2007, sporting a new exterior design.[3] After a few competitions in New Zealand the car was shipped to America to compete in the D1 All stars. He is currently competing in the European Drift Championship with the car.
Nissan Silvia S15 (HKS)
After winning the 2005 championship, Adam approached with new sponsors HKS and Dodson's, built a new car for the upcoming 2006 season. Starting from a ground up rebuild, primarily with HKS parts, the total build cost was roughly $150,000 (NZ). He competed with this car throughout 2006 and 2007, although struggled, finishing eighth in the 2006 season.
