During the mid-20th century of Hollywood, there was an actor who stood out in the western genre of American cinema.[2] That actor was Tim McCoy who is credited for his various roles in Western movies such as The Fighting Fool or Daring Danger (1932 film).[3] When looking for an actor to play a protagonist for gambling western film, Tim McCoy was an excellent choice to bring audiences in to a familiar genre with an actor that was well known in western films.[4] When picking a love interest to be paired with Tim McCoy for the film, an actress with an extensive portfolio of films she has acted in, brought the casting department to Luana Walters.[4] Luana Walters was young starlet who was often found in sci-fi, horror and most importantly western movies.[4] Walters had an advantage over other actresses as she had horseback riding experience which made her a solid choice for the co-star role of Aces and Eights.

Editing and Film Techniques

Aces and Eights is a film that relies on a slower plot and dialogue segments that take their time.[5][verification needed] The film begins by immediately pushing the audience into the lifetsyle of the world the movie is set in so that there is less confusion later on. This makes it easier for the narrator to identify who the characters are and what makes each of them unique.[5][verification needed] This slow introduction allows the audience to identify an issue with the inciting incident that accuses Tim Madigan of murdering Jose Hernandez. From there on out in the film, there is an intentionally slow, process that leaves the audience in suspense of what fate is in story for Tim Madigan.[5][verification needed]

Another important aspect the film brings in is, Cutting on Action.[6] Any shots that portray action in horseback riding or fighting, there is a break in the action usually to a reaction of another character.[5][verification needed] This allows the reaction of a character to the action, become more important than the action itself.[6]

Continuity editing was another heavily prominent aspect of Aces and Eights during dialogue and suspenseful moments.[7] To allow rhythm and consistency in the film, Sam Newfield morphed clips together with a fluent transition that made it hardly noticeable to the audience.[6]

In the end, the film combined modern and old film techniques to create a western movie that could be recognized and easily understood by many audiences.
