Abbey Lane Cemetery

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abbey Lane Cemetery is one of the city of Sheffield's many cemeteries.[1] The cemetery covers 32 acres (13 ha), and the first interment took place 26 July 1916. The cemetery stands between the suburbs of Beauchief (near Beauchief Abbey) and Woodseats, directly east of the River Sheaf as it flows through Millhouses Park.[2] Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium is located at the cemetery. Following the demolition of St. Paul's Church in the 1930s, many of the remains were transferred to Abbey Lane.[3]

The cemetery features a number of Commonwealth War Graves, including 59 casualties of the Second World War and 21 casualties from the First World War.[4][5][6]
