COMMENCEMENT IS AN EXTRAORDINARY DAY. A DAY OF PRIDE AND CELEBRATION. I HOPE EACH OF YOU WILL EMBRACE THE JOY OF THIS DAY WHILE YOU GIVE THANKS TO THOSE WHO HAVE SUPPORTED YOU. YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED MUCH! WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU. I WISH FOR EACH GRADUATE TODAY WHAT I WISH FOR MY OWN GROWN CHILDREN, AND FOR MY GRANDDAUGHTERS. I HOPE THAT YOU WILL CONTINUE TO LEARN AND GROW, THAT YOU WILL LAUGH AND LOVE, THAT YOU WILL EMBRACE A NOBLE PURPOSE AND THAT, ULTIMATELY, YOU WILL DEVELOP TO BE THE PERSON YOU HOPE TO BE. I HOPE THAT YOU MAY FIND CHALLENGES WORTHY OF YOUR TALENTS AND ENERGIES. I TRUST THAT YOU WILL HAVE OCCASION TO USE, TEST, AND EVENTUALLY SURPASS, THE LESSONS YOU HAVE LEARNED THUS FAR. I EXPECT THAT YOU WILL COME TO FEEL AND APPRECIATE THE RHYTHMS OF LIFE, AND THAT YOU WILL LEARN TO WALK MORE LIGHTLY ON THE EARTH. I TRUST THAT YOU WILL CONTINUE TO DISCOVER YOURSELF AND THAT YOU WILL CONSIDER THAT SELF A WORK IN PROGRESS. I HOPE THAT YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO VALUE THE WONDROUS DIVERSITY OF THE HUMAN CONDITION, AND THAT YOUR MIND AND SPIRIT WILL ALWAYS BE OPEN TO THE THOUGHTS, ABILITIES, AND NEEDS OF OTHERS. AND FINALLY, I HOPE THAT YEARS FROM NOW, WHEN YOU SIT IN A CEREMONY LIKE THIS ONE, CELEBRATING THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF A CHILD OR FRIEND, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO LOOK BACK ON YOUR OWN LIFE WITH THE SATISFACTION THAT COMES FROM KNOWING YOU HAVE ENDEAVORED TO MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE; ENDEAVORED TO ELEVATE RATHER THAN DIMINISH THE HUMAN SPIRIT; ENDEAVORED TO DISCERN THE MOVEMENT OF THE HUMAN STRUGGLE - AND THAT YOU HAVE BEEN A PLAYER IN IT. I RECOGNIZE THAT SOME OF YOU MAY FEEL UNCERTAINTY AT THIS MOMENT. LET ME OFFER SOME PERSPECTIVE. I HAVE BEEN AT A UNIVERSITY AS A STUDENT OR A MEMBER OF THE UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY FOR 92 SEMESTERS. YES, I AM NOT A 4TH-, 5TH- OR 6TH-YEAR SENIOR. I AM A MANY, MANY, MORE SENIOR! I NEVER LEFT. AS SUCH, I KNOW WITH CERTAINTY THAT EVERY DAY BRINGS NEW AND UNEXPECTED SITUATIONS. I CAN, HOWEVER, ASSURE YOU THAT NO MATTER THE TWISTS AND TURNS OF THE FUTURE, BY VIRTUE OF YOUR SDSU EXPERIENCE, YOU ARE PREPARED. YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED MUCH HERE. YOU HAVE THE CAPACITY TO LEARN, TO GROW, AND TO MEET CHALLENGES THAT WE CANNOT EVEN ENVISION TODAY. YOU ARE MEMBERS OF OUR SDSU FAMILY. ALWAYS. YOUR FUTURE AND OURS ARE INEXTRICABLY LINKED. AS YOUR LIFE AND CAREER DEVELOP, WE HOPE YOU WILL RETURN OFTEN, HERE, TO YOUR UNIVERSITY, TO YOUR ROOTS. WE WILL MOST ASSUREDLY ALWAYS WELCOME YOU BACK. YOU GRADUATE TODAY WITH OUR DEEP AFFECTION AND OUR GREAT RESPECT. WE ARE SO HONORED TO HAVE SHARED A PART OF YOUR LIFE. WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE PART YOU HAVE PLAYED IN THE LIFE OF THIS GREAT UNIVERSITY. CONGRATULATIONS, GRADUATES! [APPLAUSE] >> DEAN OLEVSKY: ONE OF THE FINEST COLLEGE RECOGNITIONS IS TO BE SELECTED FROM ONE'S DEPARTMENT AS THE OUTSTANDING GRADUATE. IN TURN, THESE STUDENTS SELECT THE MOST INFLUENTIAL FACULTY MEMBER OF THEIR ACADEMIC CAREER. THIS RECIPROCAL RECOGNITION IS GREATLY RESPECTED. LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO THESE FINE GRADUATES AND THE PROFESSORS THEY HAVE CHOSEN. WHEN I CALL YOUR NAMES, PLEASE REMAIN STANDING AND I WOULD LIKE TO ASK THE AUDIENCE TO HOLD YOUR APPLAUSE UNTIL ALL ARE INTRODUCED. DEPARTMENT OF AEROSPACE ENGINEERING STUDENT TIMOTHY WILKINS AND DR. DULGEROFF: ON BEHALF OF THE MORE THAN 400,000 ALUMNI OF SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY, I WELCOME YOU TO THE ALUMNI FAMILY. WE ARE PROUD OF YOU AND THRILLED TO RECOGNIZE YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT. AS YOU MAKE THE MOVE FROM STUDENT TO ALUMNI, WE INVITE YOU TO REMAIN CLOSE TO SDSU. COME BACK FOR HOMECOMING, VOLUNTEER AT AN EVENT ON CAMPUS, NETWORK WITH ALUMNI AND PARTICIPATE IN THE AZTEC MENTOR PROGRAM. YOU ARE AN AZTEC FOR LIFE, AND HOW ABOUT THAT NEW BUILDING! [APPLAUSE] YOU ARE AN AZTEC FOR LIFE, AND YOUR SUPPORT IS CRITICAL TO THE UNIVERSITY'S FUTURE. ONE OF SDSU'S FUTURE PLANS INCLUDES A VISION FOR A NEW CAMPUS IN MISSION VALLEY THAT WE HOPE TO BUILD. IT'S THE CAMPUS THAT WOULD CARRY OUR TRADITION OF PROVIDING THE HIGHEST QUALITY, RESEARCH-ORIENTED EDUCATION THROUGH THE NEXT 100 YEARS. IT ALSO WOULD PROVIDE MUCH NEEDED STUDENT HOUSING AND IT CAN INCLUDE A NEW MULTIUSE STADIUM THAT MATCHES THE AMBITIONS OF OUR INCREDIBLE SDSU FOOTBALL TEAM. IT IS NOW MY GREAT PLEASURE TO TAKE A MOMENT AND ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS YEAR, YOUR CLASS-- THE CLASS OF 2018 HAS LEFT AN UNPRECEDENTED LEGACY. MORE THAN 3,500 OF YOU MADE A DONATION TOTALING CLOSE TO $50,000 TO SUPPORT CURRENT AND FUTURE STUDENTS! WE WANT TO TAKE A MOMENT AND RECOGNIZE YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE. DONORS, YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN A DISTINGUISHED COMMENCEMENT CORD TO WEAR PROUDLY ON THIS SPECIAL DAY. WILL THOSE OF YOU WEARING THE RED-AND-WHITE LEGACY CORD PLEASE STAND AND BE RECOGNIZED? [APPLAUSE] THANK YOU FOR HELPING STUDENTS ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS. CONGRATULATIONS SDSU ALUMNI! LET US ALL STAND NOW FOR THE SINGING OF THE ALMA MATER LED BY MR. TUG WATSON. THE WORDS MAY BE FOUND ON PAGE 5 OF THE COMMENCEMENT PROGRAM. >> MR. TUG WATSON: HAIL MONTEZUMA WE WITH LOYAL HEARTS OUR HOMAGE PAY; PROUD WORKING AND GLORYING IN THE SPIRIT OF THE AZTEC NAME. TO THEE, SAN DIEGO AND THE FOND TRADITIONS, OLD AND NEW, A TRIBUTE RAISE OF LASTING PRAISE AND STEADFAST FAITH, HAIL, MONTEZUMA. [APPLAUSE] >> DEAN OLEVSKY: PLEASE BE SEATED. NOW, WE HAVE A VERY SPECIAL PRESENTATION TO COMMEMORATE THE EXCITING EVENTS OF THE PAST YEAR. [VIDEO PLAYING.] [APPLAUSE] >> DEAN OLEVSKY: WHAT A GREAT REVIEW OF THE EXPERIENCES OUR GRADUATES HAVE HAD OVER THE PAST YEAR! I WOULD NOW LIKE TO INTRODUCE OUR GUEST SPEAKER, DANIEL GODDARD, TECHNICAL ADVISOR FOR THE AIR FORCE LIFE CYCLE MANAGEMENT CENTER GUIDING DEVELOPMENT OF THE AIR FORCE'S NEXT GENERATION AIRCRAFT. MR. GODDARD IS ALSO A GRADUATE OF SDSU ENGINEERING AND A NAVY VETERAN. >> MR. GODDARD: SO HOUSE YOUR DAY GOING SO FAR? PRETTY GOOD? SO HELLO AZTECS! CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU GRADUATES. YOU ARE THE COOL SIDS! YEAH, AND YOU HAVE A VERY BRIGHT FUTURE. IT'S TRULY VERY SPECIAL TO BE INVITED BACK AND SPEAK TO YOU TODAY BY DEAN MONTY. HE IS AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE MISS AND HAD IT MEANT A LOT TO ME TO BE INVITED BACK. I THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT TO SAY TODAY, WHAT I WANTED TO KNOW WHEN I WAS SITTING IN YOUR SEATS, EXCITED ABOUT FINISHING MY SCHOOLING AND EXCITED ABOUT MOVING AUTO TO A CAREER IN ENGINEER, WHAT WOULD I I AM PART TO YOU THAT WOULD HELP YOU ALONG THE WAY SO I HOPE TO DO THAT. BUT FIRST LET US ME TELL YOU ABOUT ME TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND WHERE I'M COMING FROM. I'M SPEAKING TO YOU AS AN AZTEC ENGINEERING ALUMNI. I'M A VETERAN. I SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY AND I USED THE GI BILL TO ATTEND HERE AT SDSU. [APPLAUSE] FIRST IN MY FAMILY TO ATTEND AND GRADUATE A UNIVERSITY. MY WIFE IS ALSO A GRADUATE. SHE IS ALSO THE FIRST IN HER FAMILY TO GRADUATE WITH A DEGREE AND SHE IS ALSO AN AZTEC. WE MET AT A PARTY AND EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVE -- [CHEERS & APPLAUSE] MY STORY IS SHE PICKED ME UP, SHE HAS A DIFFERENT VERSION! [LAUGHTER] EITHER WAY THIS SUMMER WILL BE OUR 30th ANNIVERSARY. [APPLAUSE] WE HEARD SOME STOCKS ABOUT CONTINUING EDUCATION. AFTER I GOT MY AEROSPACE ENGINEERING DEGREE I WENT ON TO GET A MASTER'S DEGREE IN PRODUCTS ASSISTANCE MANAGEMENT AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING. [CHEERS & APPLAUSE] AND I ALSO AM A GRADUATE FROM THE AIR FORCES STAFF COLLEGE AND AIR WAR COLLEGE. [APPLAUSE] I LEFT SAN DIEGO STATE AND MY FIRST JOB WAS TO PLAN FLIGHT TEST MISSIONS AND THEN ANALYZE THAT DATA. I PROGRESSED AND I GOT TO ACTUALLY FLY IN THOSE MISSIONS AND EXECUTE THOSE TEST MISSIONS. I PROGRESSED AND BECAME IN CHARGE OF THE ORGANIZATION RESPONSIBLE FOR THOSE MISSIONS. I MOVED O BECAME THE DIRECTOR OF AN ORGANIZATION THAT DEVELOPED AND SUSTAINED SOFTWARE. I WORKED AT HEADQUARTERS AND WAS THE TECHNICAL DIRECTOR FOR AEROSPACE AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS, A LOT OF CYBER STUFF, COMPUTER ENGINEERING. I HAD AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY. I WAS THE DIRECTOR OF A RESEARCH LAB WITH OVER 1200 FOLKS AND 1.3 BILLION DOLLARS ANNUALLY IN A BUDGET. WE CREATED CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY AND IT WAS A FANTASTIC JOB. AS I SAID I'M THE TECHNICAL ADVISOR FOR NEXT GENERATION AIRCRAFT AND THAT ALL START WITH A LAUNCHING PAD HERE AT SDSU SO THAT'S WHERE YOU'RE GOING. BUT YOU KNOW, THAT SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD, RIGHT? BUT HERE IS THE REST OF THE STORY. I'VE HAD FAILURES. I MADE MISTAKES. I'VE COME TO UNDERSTAND MY OWN IGNORANCE AND LIMITATIONS. I'VE NOT ALWAYS BEEN THE BEST AT WORK RELATIONSHIPS AND I UNDERSTAND THAT BOTH -- I'VE COME TO UNDERSTAND THAT RISK, BOTH PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL CAREER RISK WITH MAKING THE RIGHT DECISION IN WHAT YOU BELIEVE IS THE RIGHT DECISION BUT NOT THE POPULAR ONE AND, YEAH, I'VE PAID THE PRICE. I'VE COME TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE NEED TO MAINTAIN A GOOD WORK/LIFE BALANCE. GUESS WHAT? THAT'S PRETTY NORMAL IN LIFE. YOU HAVE YOUR UPS AND YOUR DOWNS AND IT'S A GREAT RIDE. ANY SUCCESS I'VE HAD HAS BEEN BECAUSE I'VE MADE ADJUSTMENTS ON THE WAY. I'VE TRIED TO CONTINUOUSLY ADVANCE MY KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE. I'VE LEARNED FROM MY MISTAKES AND I CONTINUE TO WORK HARD AT MY RELATIONSHIPS AND MY WORK/LIFE BALANCE. WHAT DO I HOPE TO CONVEY TO YOU? NOTHING RIVETING OR NEW, REALLY TIME-HONORED ADVICE. WHILE TECHNOLOGY ADVANCES, ORGANIZATIONS AND PEOPLE REMAIN FAIRLY STABLE AND THAT'S WHY A LOT OF ADVICE IS TIMELESS BUT IT HELPS TO BE REMINDED AS WE GO THROUGH LIFE BECAUSE IT IS THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS. TODAY IS ABOUT YOU. THE COOL KIDS. THE WORLD NEEDS YOU TO SOLVE TOUGH PROBLEMS. TOUGH PROBLEMS THAT INVOLVE TECHNOLOGY. THIS CHALLENGE IS PERENNIAL. MY CLASS WAS CHALLENGED WITH THAT, THE CLASS BEFORE ME WAS CHALLENGED WITH THAT AND YOU WERE CHALLENGED WITH THAT TODAY. TECHNOLOGY IS EVERY-CHANGING AND CREATIVE TECHNOLOGY IS ADVANCING FASTER TODAY THAN WHEN I WAS IN YOUR SHOES. WE ALL KNOW WHAT A BYTE IS, A COMPUTER STORAGE MEMORY, WE KNOW THAT A GIGABYTES IS A MILLION BYTES AND WE WRITE AS A 1 FOLLOWED BY 180S, THAT'S JUST STICKIN' BIG! THERE ARE 3.6XOBYTES OF INFORMATION GLOBALLY EVERY DAY. HOW DO WE MAKE SENSE OF THAT? RIGHT NOW IT GOES ON AN ELECTRONIC SPECTRUM, IT'S GETTING MORE CONGESTED EVERY DAY. HOW DO WE USE THAT, YOU MECHANICAL ENGINEERS, AEROSPACE ENGINEERS, THAT'S GOING TO BE IN CARS, PLANES, BUILDINGS, EVERYTHING. HOW DO WE MANAGE THAT? THAT'S ONE OF THE CHALLENGES WE HAVE. NOW IN MATERIAL SCIENCE IT'S EXPLODING, WE PRINT PARTS FOR SOME TIME NOW. TECHNOLOGY IS ADVANCING AT AN AMAZING RATE AND IT'S ACROSS ALL YOUR ENGINEERING DISCIPLINES. SO AS PRESIDENT ROUSH SAID YOU MIGHT FEEL UNCERTAINTY TODAY AND IT NEVER GOES AWAY, BECAUSE IT'S A MOTIVATOR, AND IT MOTIVATES YOU TO LEARN AND BECOME BETTER SO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AS YOU GO FORWARD. YOU HAVE DEMONSTRATED THE CAPACITY TO GO FORWARD. PETER VON KARMON SAID SCIENCE IS THE STUDY OF THE WORLD AS IT IS, ENGINEERS CREATES THE WORLD AS IT NEVER EXISTED. THAT'S YOU. [APPLAUSE] YOU ARE ENGINEERS. YOU MAKE TOMORROW HAPPEN. YOU GET TO MAKE TOMORROW HAPPEN. THAT'S A PRETTY COOL JOB. YOU ARE THE COOL KIDS. WHAT'S IMPORTANT IS TO FIND YOUR PASSION, WHAT DRIVES YOU, ENGINEERING IS A BROAD AREA. YOU NEED TO ULTIMATELY UNDERSTAND YOUR RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN LIFE. IT IS YOU THAT HAS YOUR HAND ON THE RUDDER. ENGINEERING IS A BROAD AREA. YOU DECIDE WHERE TO FOCUS YOUR FUTURE, WHERE YOU WORK, WHERE TO TAKE YOU'RE CAREER AND HOW FAR TO TAKE YOUR EDUCATION. YOUR LEARNING SHOULDN'T STOP TODAY. THERE IS NO END TO LEARNING. I'M STILL LEARNING. YOUR DEGREE IS YOUR LAUNCHING PAD TOWARD THE FUTURE. YOU ALSO NEED TO THINK ABOUT BROADENING YOURSELF. ENGINEERS HAVE GOOD ANALYTICAL SKILLS, MAY NOT NOT AS GOOD AS WRITING OR VERBALLY COMMUNICATING. YOU NEED TO BECOME GOOD AT THAT. YOU COULD HAVE THE FINEST INNOVATION EVER BUT IF YOU CAN'T COMMUNICATE THE IMPORTANCE OF THAT YOU MIGHT NOT BE AS SUCCESSFUL AS YOU'D LIKE. PRODUCT MANAGEMENT, BUSINESS, IF YOU WANT TO ADVANCE IN THE RANKS AND BE IN CHARGE OF ENGINEERING TEAMS AND ORGANIZATIONS YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT HOW TO BECOME A GOOD LEADER, TOO, A LEADER OF WOMEN AND A LEADER OF MEN. DO NO HARM. INNOVATIONS COME WITH RISK. WE NEED TO ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RISK, WHAT'S THE TYPE OF RISK, IS IT SAFETY RISK? PRIVACY RISK? BUSINESS RISK? CYBER SECURITY RISK IN WHAT'S THE PROBABILITY OF THAT RISK HAPPENING AND WHAT'S THE CONSEQUENCE OF IT HAPPEN? WHO IS THE RISK TO? IS IT TO A COMPANY? PERSON? YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT DOING NO HARM AND ENGINEERING WITH INTEGRITY. FRUSTRATION IS INEVITABLE. YOU NEED TO MANAGE YOUR FRUSTRATIONS. YOU'RE GOING TO RUN INTO ORGANIZATIONAL ROAD BLOCKS, RESISTANCE TO CHANGE OR INNOVATIONS, ORGANIZATIONAL STAGNATION, BAD BOSS'S AND INTERPERSONAL CONFLICTS. DON'T ROADBLOCK YOUR CAREER WITH FRUSTRATION. YOU NEED TO CHECK YOUR OWN BIASES, YOUR OWN EMOTIONS AND MAKE SURE IT'S WORTH THE RISK. IS IT ANNOYANCE? SOMETHING MINOR? DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF. BE A PHOENIX. YOU'RE GOING TO FAIL. PEOPLE WHO NEVER FAIL PROBABLY HAVE NOT ACCOMPLISHED VERY MUCH. YOU WILL GET KNOCKED DOWN BUT BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, YOUR PERSEVERANCE, YOUR PERSISTENCE, HOW ULTIMATELY OPTIMISTIC AND TENACIOUS YOU ARE WILL DETERMINE YOUR SUCCESS. NEVER GIVE UP AND NEVER QUIT. KEEP IN THE GAME, DON'T LET 'EM WIN. AND FINALLY YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE. WORK HARD, ALWAYS STRIVE TO IMPROVE BUT TONIGHT FORGET YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE. YOUR FAMILY IS THE FOLKS YOU ROLL WITH, THEY ARE YOUR SUPPORT IN THE GOOD TIMES AND MORE IMPORTANTLY IN THE BAD TIMES. YOU REALLY NEED 'EM. THEY MAKE YOU STRONG, THEY ARE YOUR ROCK. YOUR LEGACY, YOUR IMMORTALITY IS THROUGH YOUR FAMILY. THAT'S WHO WE REALLY WORK FOR. MAKE SURE YOU SPEND TIME WITH THEM AND MAKE FANTASTIC MEMORIES WITH THEM. [APPLAUSE] NOW WHAT'S REALLY EXCITING ABOUT LIFE IS THERE IS NO CORE CURRICULUM. IT'S ALL AN ELECTIVE. THE PATHS ARE MANY, DETERMINATION, AND THE ENDING IS UNDARNEDED. IF THERE IS ANY ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU IT'S TO GET GOOD AT SOMETHING, EXPERIENCE LIFE, AND FIND YOUR PASSIONS. SO HAVE CONFIDENCE IN YOURSELF, WORK HARD, NEVER STOP LEARNING, DEMONSTRATE YOUR EXCELLENCE, MANAGE YOUR FRUSTRATIONS, NEVER GIVE UP, HAVE A BALANCED QUALITY OF LIFE, LOVE THE ONES YOU'RE WITH, THERE YOU GO, YOU HAVE THE EDUCATION, YOU'VE DEMONSTRATED THE INTELLIGENCNCNCNCNCNC LE,E, TENACITY. NOW AS YOU SETOFF INTO YOUR CAREER REMEMBER IT'S ABOUT THE JOURNEY, THE GOODS AND THE BADS. WHAT YOU OVERCOME AND MORE IMPORTANTLY HOW YOU OVERCOME IT. IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE MOUNTAINS TO CLIMB, THE SETBACKS, THE TRIALS, THE CHALLENGES, IT WOULD BE BORING. THE SUCCESS YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE WOULD BE NOTHING IF ONE'S LIFE WAS EASY AND UNCOMPLICATED. THE WORLD WILL BE SHAPED BY YOU OVER THE NEXT DECADES, SHAPE THE WORLD INTO A BETTER PLACE, BE THE CHANGE. CONGRATULATIONS, BE PROUD OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS, ENJOY THE JOURNEY AND BEST WISHES ON A GREAT VOYAGE. [CHEERS & APPLAUSE] >> DEAN OLEVSKY: THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR INSPIRING WORDS. NEXT, I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME OUR VALEDICTORIAN, ALICE SOKOLOVA, BACK TO THE PODIUM. IN ADDITION TO EARNING THE HIGHEST GPA IN THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, I AM PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT SHE HAS BEEN ADMITTED TO THE SDSU-UCSD ENGINEERING JOINT DOCTORAL PROGRAM THIS FALL. [APPLAUSE] >> MS. SOKOLOVA: THANK YOU. WHEN I WAS A HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE I WAS OFTEN ASKED WHY I CHOSE TO GO TO SDSU FOR COLLEGE. I WAS TOLD THAT SURELY I WOULD HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED INTO MANY PRESTIGIOUS SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, I HAD ACCEPTANCE LETTERS FROM A NUMBER OF HIGHLY RANKED UNIVERSITIES HOWEVER I WAS CONFIDENT ABOUT MY CHOICE AND NEVER DID I REGRET IT. EVERY DAY SPENT AT SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY CONVINCED ME THAT SDSU IS THE BEST SCHOOL FOR ME. SDSU HAS A GREAT ENGINEERING PROGRAM WHICH EMPHASIS PRACTICAL SKILLS FOR REAL APPLICATIONS, WE HAVE A WIDE SET OF LAB COURSES CULL HIM IN NATURE BE WITH THE GRAND SENIOR DESIGN PROJECT AND LEND DEAR ENGINEERING FACULTY AMONG WHOM THE NAME OF FRED HARRIS IS THE MOST FAMOUS. [APPLAUSE] WE'VE GOT A BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS BUILD IN SPANISH COLONIAL REVIVAL STYLE, A HUGE LIBRARY WHERE I NEVER FAILED TO FIND THE BOOK I NEEDED IN VARIOUS LANGUAGE. WE HAVE A GORGEOUS NEW ENGINEERING AND INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENCES BUILDING WHICH IS EVERYBODY'S NEW FAVORITE HANGOUT SPOT. TOP EDUCATION, ALL AT A REASONABLE CSU PRICE. OF EVERY PERSON AND ORGANIZATION WHO HELPED ME ALONG THIS JOURNEY I AM MOST GRATEFUL TO THE SDSU MERIT SCHOLARS PROGRAM. IT COVERED ALL MY TUITION AND BOOK EXPENSES THROUGHOUT ALL FOUR YEARS OF STUDIES AT SDSU. I AM FOREVER GRATEFUL TO SDSU FOR FUNDING MY STUDIES AND RELIEVING ME OF THE FINANCIAL BURDEN HINDERING THE EDUCATION OF MANY BRIGHT STUDENTS IN THIS COUNTRY. I AM EQUALLY GRATEFUL TO MY PARENTS FOR THIS EDUCATION, I ALWAYS HAD A WELCOMING HOME TO RETURN TO. MOREOVER MY FATHER BEING AN ELECTRICAL ENGINEER HIMSELF WAS ABLE TO ADVISE ME AND ANSWER QUESTIONS I HAD. I'M GRATEFUL TO EVERY PROFESSOR WHO PUSHED ME TOWARD GREATER KNOWLEDGE AND OFFERED TIME AND ATTENTION. THANK YOU, PROFESSORS, FOR BEING EDUCATE ORES AND CARRYING THE DAUNTING TASK OF PASSING ON KNOWLEDGE TO THE NEW GENERATION OF ENGINEERS. [APPLAUSE] THANK YOU FOR THE AMAZING LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION YOU WROTE FOR ME WHEN I APPLIED FOR INTERNSHIPS AND GRADUATE PROGRAMS AND FOR MENTORING ME. I GREATLY APPRECIATE EVERY PROFESSOR WHOSE LECTURES I'VE HAD THE HONOR OF ATTENDING BUT I WANT TO GIVE SPECIAL MENTION TO DR. ANDREW ZITTO THE MOST INFLUENTIAL FACULTY MEMBER FOR ME. WHEN I FIRST MET THE PROFESSOR IN EE330 LAB HE TOLD ME IF I KEEP UP MY GOOD WORK, I WOULD BE VALEDICTORIAN. I GUESS HE WAS RIGHT. HE PUSHED ME. I ALWAYS WANT TO EXPRESS MY GRATTITUDE TO PROFESSOR OXSONLY WHO AGREED TO BE MY MENTOR WHEN I BEGAN DOCTORAL STUDIES THROUGH THE JOINT PH.D. PROGRAM. I WANT TO THANK MY FRIENDS WHO SAT NEXT TO ME AT LECTURES, STUDIED WITH ME, GRABBED COFFEE WITH ME, GRABBED THE TROLLEY WITH ME AND OFFERED A LISTENING EAR, THANK YOU FOR INVITING ME TO YOUR HOUSES, GOING TO THE MOVIES WITH ME AND SHARING MY NERDY INTEREST. YOU MAKE MY WORLD BRIGHTER. [APPLAUSE] I'M GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK BEFORE Y'ALL TODAY BUT I WANT TO RECOGNIZE ANOTHER STUDENT WHO IS EQUALLY WORTHY OF DELIVERING A SPEECH TODAY, MOHAMMAD ALSAHALI IS A STRAIGHT-A STUDENT. HE IS A DEDICATED ENGINEER WHO ALWAYS SITS IN THE FRONT ROW OF THE CLASSROOM AND NEVER MISSES A SINGLE LECTURE. HE CAME TO THE UNITED STATES FROM SAUDI ARABIA TO STUDY. [APPLAUSE] HIS GPA IS 0.02 POINTS BELOW MINE. DEFACTOR, OUR GRADES ARE IDENTICAL AND I WISH THE CEREMONY RULES ALLOWED MORE THAN ONE STUDENT TO SPEAK. SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF MOHAMMAD, THE PEOPLE HE IS MOST THANKFUL TO ARE HIS FAMILY IN SUED DISTRICT ATTORNEY ABRIBE YA AND HE MISSES THEM DEALER. WHEN HIS NAME IS CALLED DURING THE CEREMONY I ASK YOU ALL TO PLEASE GIVE HIM LOUD APPLAUSE AND GRANT HIM THE SAME RECOGNITION YOU BESTOWED ON ME. [APPLAUSE] MY HIGH GRADES ARE THE REASON I'M HONORED TO SPEAK TO YOU TODAY. HOWEVER, I WANT TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE OF GRADE POINT AVERAGES AND STUDENT COMPETITION. YOUR GPA IS NOT A MEASURE OF YOUR WORTH. [APPLAUSE] YES, I HAD TO WORK HARD TO EARN MY GPA BUT HERE ARE SOME THINGS I DID NOT HAVE TO DO. I DID NOT HAVE TO WORK A FULL-TIME JOB OR PART-TIME JOB IN ORDER TO EARN ENOUGH MONEY TO SUSTAIN MYSELF. I DID NOT HAVE TO PERFORM THE BASIC TASKS OF KEEPING MYSELF ALIVE, SUCH AS GROCERY SHOPPING, COOKING AND PAYING BILLS. I DID NOT HAVE TO OVERCOME PHYSICAL OR MENTAL CRIPPLING ILLNESSES OR DISABILITIES. I DID NOT HAVE TO SUFFER PAIN OR ANXIETY OR DEPRESSION. WAKING UP WAS NEVER A DAILY STRUGGLE FOR ME. I DID NOT HAVE TO CARE FOR AN ILL FAMILY MEMBER, SPOUSE OR PET. I NEVER HAD TO RUSH SOMEONE I LOVED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT TO THE HOSPITAL THE DAY BEFORE A MID-TERM. I DO NOT HAVE CHILDREN TO TAKE CARE OF WHILE PURSUING MY DEGREE, I DO NOT HAVE TO JUGGLE MY SCHOOLWORK AND A CHILD'S NEEDS AT THE SAME TIME. I NEVER HAD TO STRUGGLE WITH THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, I NEVER HAD TO STRAIN TO COMPREHEND THE WORDS A PROFESSOR IS SPEAKING INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON THE LECTURE MATERIAL. I NEVER HAD TO FLIP THROUGH DOZENS OF PAGES IN A DICTIONARY TO WRITE AN HE IS KAY, I DID NOT HAVE TO BATTLE ADDICTIONS OR FLEA FROM ABUSE. I NEVER HAD TO WORRY ABOUT MY SAFETY OR THE SAFETY OF PEOPLE I LOVED. I AM IN AWE OF EVERY PERSON WHO FIGHTS FOR HIS OR HER DEGREE DESPITE OBSTACLES, DIFFICULTIES AND OBLIGATIONS, I KNOW THAT I HAD TO WORK AND GO TO SCHOOL AT THE SAME TIME I WOULD NOT BE GIVING THIS SPEECH. MY ONLY JOB WAS TO FOCUS ON SCHOOLWORK AND MOST PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE THAT LUXURY. DON'T CRITICIZE YOURSELF IF YOUR GRADES ARE SLIPPING, LOWER THAN YOUR CLASSMATES. [APPLAUSE] EVERY PERSON HERE IS A HERO FOR PULLING THROUGH AND EARNING YOUR DEGREE IN A SYSTEM WHERE EDUCATION SOMEBODY UNIVERSAL, NOT FREE AND NOT EASILY ACCESSIBLE. [APPLAUSE] TODAY MIGHT BE THE LAST TIME WE SEE SOME OF OUR CLASSMATES. WE'VE GONE THROUGH MANY CHALLENGES TOGETHER BUT NOW WE ARE HEADED TO NEW ENDEAVORS AND NEW ADVENTURES. HOWEVER, DO RECALL THE WORDS OF A FAMOUS 1999 GRADUATION SONG YOU MIGHT RECOGNIZE FROM EARLIER GRADUATIONS. AS WE GO ON WE REMEMBER ALL THE TIMES WE SPENT TOGETHER, AS I OUR LIVES CHANGE COME WHATEVER WE WILL STILL BE FRIENDS FOREVER [APPLAUSE] KHANNING YOU. THANK YOU. [CHEERS & APPLAUSE] >> DEAN OLEVSKY: AT THIS TIME I WOULD LIKE TO EXCUSE THE PRESIDENT'S PARTY AND THANK THEM FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION. [APPLAUSE] DEAR GRADUATES, OVER THE COURSE OF YOUR JOURNEY AS ENGINEERING STUDENTS, YOU HAVE: LEARNED THE MATHEMATICAL AND SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES WHICH YOU HAVE USED TO INNOVATE AND DESIGN; RECOGNIZED THAT THE RESOURCES OF THIS EARTH ARE FINITE AND NEED TO BE PROTECTED; AND GAINED AN UNDERSTANDING THAT WE MUST EMBRACE DIVERSITY AND BE ABLE TO WORK IN A A A A A A A G COMMUNITY YOU ARE NOW PREPARED TO JOIN THE PROFESSION OF ENGINEERING. PLEASE CONTINUE TO WORK ON AND ENHANCE YOUR PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, AS ENGINEERING IS ALWAYS EVOLVING; STAY ENGAGED WITH YOUR ALMA MATER; AND FINALLY, NEVER STOP WORKING TO ENGINEER A MORE MAGNIFICENT TOMORROW. [APPLAUSE] WE WOULD NOW LIKE TO INDIVIDUALLY RECOGNIZE EACH OF THE CLASS OF 2018 GRADUATES FROM THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING. EARNING A COLLEGE DEGREE REQUIRES HARD WORK, SACRIFICE, AND DEDICATION.
