The 45th International Emmy Awards took place in November 20, 2017 at the Hilton Hotel in New York City. The ceremony was hosted by Iranian-American comedian-actor Maz Jobrani.[2]

Aasif Mandvi, Melissa Villaseñor, Larry King, Italia Ricci, Tom Cullen, Kevin McKidd, Margot Bingham, Carmen Aub, Rodrigo Santoro, Helene Yorke, Freddy Rodriguez, Marina Ruy Barbosa, Renato Góes, Les Twins and Sebastian Koch served as award presenters.[3]

The Directorate Award and 11 Emmy statues were presented by the International Academy during the evening.[4]

Entries and Judging

There are three rounds of judging. The first round takes place in the spring; the semi-final round takes place in the summer - hosted by Member companies; and the finals take place in September. Nominations are announced in October. Four nominees are selected in each category and winners are revealed at the International Emmy Awards Gala, held in November.

Ceremony

Nominations for the International Emmys were announced by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on September 27, 2017. There were 44 programs nominated in 11 categories from 18 countries. Brazil stood out with the largest number of nominations - a total of nine - in several categories. Rede Globo, meanwhile, scored the most nominations, with six.

The winners were announced on November 20, 2017 at a Black-Tie Gala held at the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel, hosted by comedian Maz Jobrani. Kenneth Branagh won the International Emmy for Best Actor for her performance on the British television series Wallander, while Anna Friel won the Best Actress Award for her role in Marcella. Branagh and Friel were among 11 winning performers and programs spanning eight countries: Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Norway, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States.[5]

Norwegian detective series Mammon II won for Best Drama Series. Steve Coogan won the Best Comedy prize for Alan Partridge's Scissored Isle. Turkish drama series Kara Sevda won in the Best Telenovela category.[6]

Canada's Hip-Hop Evolution won Best Arts Programming category. United Kingdom's film Exodus: Our Journey to Europe won the award for Best Documentary. Belgium's Sorry Voor Alles won for nonscripted entertainment;[7] best non-English-language US primetime show went to HBO Latin America and Lemon Films’ Sr. Ávila; and German project The Braun Family, from Polyphon in Berlin, won in the Short-Form Series category.[8]
