24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Circuit de la Sarthe track
Circuit de la Sarthe track

The 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual was a sim racing eSports event held over 13–14 June 2020. It was held as a placeholder for the postponed 2020 24 Hours of Le Mans in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was hosted on rFactor 2.[1]

Background

The 2020 24 Hours of Le Mans was postponed from its scheduled dates of 13 and 14 June to 19 and 20 September due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in France.[2] In place of the postponed race, the automotive group the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), the FIA World Endurance Championship and Motorsport Games elected to organise a simulated version of the event called the 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual on the RFactor 2 gaming platform on the original dates.[3] The ACO allocated a maximum of 50 entries, 30 Le Mans Prototypes and 20 LM GTE cars. Each entry consisted of 4 drivers, with at least two of the drivers being FIA-licensed drivers.[4]

Reception

The event was generally considered a success.[9] The ACO, FIA WEC and Motorsport Games were praised for the quality of event organisation and the number of big-name drivers attracted to the event, leading Charles Leclerc to state his intention to enter the real race in the future.[10] The rFactor 2 software that ran the event are very experienced with these kind of events, and even though there were two red flags in the race due to server crashes, the race continued quickly due to the developers having put in measures beforehand. The software was praised for it's great realism.[11]

Notes

  1. ^ Entry had three laps deleted for exceeding maximum driving time.
