2024 North Sumatra gubernatorial election

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

2024 North Sumatra gubernatorial election

← 2018

Governor before election

Hassanudin (Acting)
Independent

Elected Governor

TBD

Gubernatorial election will be held on North Sumatra in 2024 alongside other local elections nationwide to elect the Governor of North Sumatra to a five-year term.[1] The election will be held on 27 November 2024.[2]

Electoral system

The election, like other local elections in 2024, follow the first-past-the-post system where the candidate with the most votes wins the election, even if they do not win a majority.[3] It is possible for a candidate to run uncontested, in which case the candidate is still required to win a majority of votes "against" an "empty box" option. Should the candidate fail to do so, the election will be repeated on a later date.[4]

A political party or coalition of parties must held at least 20 seats in the North Sumatra Regional House of Representatives to be able to field a pair of candidates for Governor and Vice Governor.[5] With 22 and 21 seats each, both Golkar and PDI-P are able to field their own pair of candidates for Governor and Vice Governor without the need to form a coalition of parties.[6] Candidates may alternatively demonstrate support in form of photocopies of identity cards, which in North Sumatra's case corresponds to 814,046 copies.[7] No such candidates registered with the General Elections Commission by the provided deadline.[8]

Incumbent governor Edy Rahmayadi is eligible for re-election for the office of Governor of North Sumatra.
