- Today is the International Peace Day, which aims to be a ceasefire and a non violence day around the world. Filomena Lopes from WOPG is our guest in this 7 o'clock news. Thank you for accepting our invitation. - Thank you. - What is the aim of this International Peace day? How is it celebrated? - The International Peace Day was the result of Jeremy Gilley's efforts, who made a documentary. And it took a few years before he succeeded in 2001, that the 21st September was established as a ceasefire and a non-violence day. When this project began... Jeremy Gilley is the founder of “Peace One Day” and this project had a real impact in 2006, when they succeed Afghanistan to cease fire. And as a consequence of that ceasefire in Afghanistan, it was possible to send, with the help of UN, 10,000 vaccinators to remote areas where they could not go without being kidnapped, and 1,6 million children were vaccinated against polio. That year, there was a statement from the UN announcing a 70% reduction in violence. So this day had a great impact. - So it means that since then, some years went by, all those efforts have been worth doing. And talking about this day, as you said, Jeremy Gilley, a film maker, a pacifist, who is greatly responsible for all this process of constructing peace. We also have to mention this other name, this man, from India, I'm taking about Prem Rawat. Both already met and together engaged in some actions. So who is Prem Rawat? - Prem Rawat is an ambassador of peace who has been speaking for over 40 years about the topic of peace. The approach of Prem Rawat towards peace is that peace is essential to the human being. It's as essential as food and water. It’s fundamental for a human being to feel peace. So, whilst Jeremy Gilley’s approach is more like to ceasefire, Prem Rawat says that ceasefire alone is not enough to feel peace... - If the individual doesn’t create that humanism inside of them, if he doesn't look for that inner peace. - If he doesn’t feel peace. He also says something very interesting, not only peace is essential to the human being but the capacity to feel peace is already inside of them. The proof is, if you look at a baby, you see he's in peace. Children are in peace. So what he reminds people is, how important it is to connect to that feeling of peace. - That is the message he's been taking everywhere, to all countries. - He's been inspiring... Let's say he is a very inspiring person, very clear and very passionate about this topic. And he has been speaking to millions of people. So he reminds people how important is each human being to be in peace because if each one is in peace, they won't make war with their neighbour, or family... And finally the world will be in peace. If all of us could feel peace inside... All of us have felt peace. The question is, how much do we value that feeling? How much do we give priority to peace in our life? - But mankind itself, Filomena, does not value that feeling. - Exactly. - Actually, we see war present in all continents, one way or another. And they are more sophisticated, as we've just seen in Syria, chemical weapons. And all that means millions and millions of Euros and years of destroying... - Yes, a lot more is spent on war than in peace. That's why people like Prem Rawat and Jeremy Gilley have all our appreciation. Kofi Annan, Dalai Lama, so many who spoke for peace, they deserve our appreciation. And more, it's very important that each one of us as a human being takes responsibility to do something for peace, to feel peace and have that choice in our life. Because most wars we make every day with people that we really love, we could choose not to, it's a matter of choice. Most times we aren't even aware, we just fight and we don't have time for peace. We must run, we must conquer things and in the middle of that conquering, it became more important "to have" than "to be." And PR draws our attention to the importance of the human being and its intrinsic value. - But that old saying, if you will, that goes: "To attain peace, first you must make war." Does it make any sense? - In fact, it doesn't make sense at all. To attain peace it's important that each human being values peace and become aware that, if we want to live a life with quality, it's very important to live that life experiencing peace. Ourselves. And then, really, we won't feel like making war. - So what tools are there available for that to be achieved. Are we talking about just through dialogue or is there much more? - There's much more... Let me give you an example: I find it to be striking: in a prison in Texas, a high security prison with prisoners that aren't there for stealing bananas - real prisoners - a Peace Education Program took place, consisting of 12 seminars where the participants were invited to reflect on the inner resources that they already had to access peace. And what happened was something remarkable: the local authorities themselves said that after that program - they had been in many others - but after that specific one what happened was, the recidivism rate dropped dramatically, Which is a big problem they have. They come out of prison back to the same gangs and they're locked in again. To look at those people - you had the opportunity to see the videos - to look at them and see how they changed completely their perspective of life and how they say that, in fact, violence was ignorance of what peace could give them in order to appreciate life, it's fascinating, it's very touching. - To conclude... - So if they can, we also can. - So let's talk about the event that is celebrating this day in Hague. People at home who have internet can follow this event with musicians, conferences, right? - Right. One very relevant thing is that last year they had an audience of 280 million people. That's very important. It means that there are now many people realizing that, more important than conquering all things... - Hence the event that started at 6pm and will run for 24h, and people can follow it at home through Youtube. - Exactly. - Filomena, thank you so much for being in our 7 o'clock news. - Thank you.
