The 1992–93 UEFA Cup was won by Juventus, who beat Borussia Dortmund 6–1 on aggregate in the final, a record score for a UEFA Cup final. It was the third victory in the competition for the Italian team (first club to reach this record).

Three seasons had now passed since the ban on English clubs in European competitions as a result of the Heysel disaster (1985) had been lifted, and for this campaign the number of English clubs in the competition was increased from one to two. English league runners-up Manchester United were joined by third placed Sheffield Wednesday, though both teams ultimately had a short-lived run in the competition. Poland earned one more seat, while Finland and Hungary lost one.

Ajax were the defending champions, but were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Auxerre.

East Germany ceased to participate as an independent association (having merged with the West German association due to the German reunification). This left UEFA one country short for the UEFA Cup, and therefore a new country (Slovenia) were given one spot.
East Germany were no longer counted for the 1991 UEFA Country Ranking (decisive for the number of spots in the 1992–93 UEFA Cup). Turkey moved up to 21st place in that ranking and therefore were entitled to enter two clubs. Former Soviet Union now Community of Independent States had three places, and clubs qualified according to 1991 Soviet Top League, but after that UEFA recognized to Ukraine its own spot in the Cup Winners Cup, Chornomorets ceded their place in UEFA Cup to Dynamo Moscow.
Albanian clubs were excluded from all competitions in the 1992-93 season which allowed Scotland to have three entries.
Yugoslavia was disqualified after UN ban: UEFA awarded one of its two places to Romania, while the other one was given to Austria.

  • ^
Wales: There was no national league in Wales before 1992 and the only competition organised by the Football Association of Wales was the Welsh Cup, so Wales had just a single participant in European competitions, the winner (or best-placed Welsh team as several English teams also competed) of the Welsh Cup, which competed in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Its virtual ranking (14.000) is only an original research, because the UEFA country ranking was only used to allocate the UEFA Cup spots at time, so Wales was not included.
  • ^
East Germany: The slots previously allocated to East Germany did not apply due to the reunification of Germany, and the end of the NOFV-Oberliga. It was the first time a country disappeared since the introduction of the UEFA ranking, requiring an unprecedented decision. As two spots vacated, UEFA no more considered East Germany. Consequently, Turkey moved to the additional spot zone, and another place became available at the bottom of the list for the title holders. As the latter did not need, it was given to a new country, Slovenia.
  • ^
USSR, Russia & Ukraine: USSR had three spots according to its ranking. As a result of the last Soviet season, two Ukrainian and one Russian clubs earned those places (while both UCL and CWC places were Russian). Even if Ukraine applied for a full UEFA membership in 1992, an immediate separation would have banned the provisional CIS squad for the UEFA Euro 1992. Following an agreement between Russia, Ukraine and UEFA, Ukraine relinquished all Soviet football heritage to Russia, that in turn immediately accepted a separate Ukrainian representation in UCL and CWC, while the UEFA Cup spots were divided upon the last Soviet championship results. However, Chornomorets won the Ukrainian Cup and ceded their place in UEFA Cup to Dynamo Moscow, so two spots went to the Russians and simply one to the Ukrainians.
  • ^
Albania: As the political situation in Albania collapsed and the national team could not complete the UEFA Euro 1992 qualifying, Albanian clubs were excluded from all competitions for the 1992–93 season, and their one slot in the UEFA Cup was assigned as usual to the best ranked association with a single additional spot.
  • ^
Yugoslavia: Yugoslavia was disqualified after a United Nations ban due to the breakup of the country and the ensuing warfare there. As Yugoslavia was banned from European club competitions, their two slots in the UEFA Cup were assigned as usual to the two best ranked associations with a single additional spot.
