The bobcats of western Dube YOOUK taking on the top-ranked and top seeded cyclones of Harlan. What a match-up we have for everyone in class 4a. This is a great sandwich game if you will for the triple header because these two teams are really going to go at one another. >> I think they really are. The one thing that western Dube YOOUK needs to do is they need to guard against the turnovers. They've turned it over a lot in this tournament. But they're in this title game in spite of all of that. And I think what Harlan needs to do, they need to get the ball inside. They need to establish that paint. And that's where they've been living most of this tournament, is on the inside game. >> Western Dube YOOUK trying to go for their first championship since they won the first five-player title back in 1987. And for the Harlan cyclones. Five starters who were on the state championship volleyball team but they're also in search of their first ever girls' state basketball championship. So here we go. That's what's at stake. A 4a title. And a lot of history here tonight at Wells Fargo arena as they are fired up for western Dube YOOUK and Harlan. And the head coach for Harlan is Zack clausen. The floor officials tonight are Royce reminger, Dave shownrock, and Jason slaughter. Welcome, western Dubuque, and Harlan to the 2014 Iowa girls' tournament. >> It's time to go. Harlan against western Dubuque. The cyclones will be wearing their home uniforms with red numbers trimmed in black. And for the bobcats their away black with red numbers trimmed in white. Your starters for western Dubuque, Armstrong, lenseater, web WRER, HARL SXN moss. For Harlan Shafer, moss, Frederick. SHABin and moss in the center circle. And this one is under way. They want to go uptempo there has not been a team that's averaged better than 50 points a game. Harlan leads all 4a scoring teams average's 48 1/2 per game. One-run of the things Zack clausen told sis wants to go fast and he does to the hoop right there. They did a good job of getting that set up for the first bucket. >> Harlan got off to a quick start in their semifinal victory against Carlyle. They scored 21 but scored 27 the rest of the way. And had to hold on to knock off the upset-minded team from Carlyle. Turnover early on by western Dubuque. The bobcats entering at 23-2. The 23 wins is a school record. >> Let's look at the Harlan keys. They need to establish inside. Get the ball down low and get inside and get the easy points and no second chance points. They don't want to give up any second chance opportunities. They gave up 18 second chance points to Carlyle. >> Did a great job of stepping through two defenders to get to the rim. >> The three from the side. Can't get it to fall. Here come the bobcats. >> You can see where they got the dribble penetration, knock the defense out. You see that a little tonight out of Harlan. >> The bobcats are methodical offensively as Moss fires the three. They're only scored 60 points or more in just three games this year. The pace really not where they would want it. As Harlan tries to go inside and it's stole Anne way by Western Dubuque. >> Little bit better station on the inside. >> Top defender for Harlan. >> All these teams with the dribble penetration and dish outside. >> We are tied at 4. Harlan with three starters back from last year's team that fell in the final. Here's Schaben. Good position and count it. She'll go to the line to try to TFRT the three-point play. >> Schaben did a great job. Keeping it above her head. Making that drop step to the hoop. That's a familiar name there, D.J. Any relation to you? >> We're all related in western Iowa. What are you talking about? Every Schaben. Like Smith. >> I'm sure it is. A phone book full of Schabens. >> Western Dubuque. >> What they need to do is handle the pressure. They cannot turn it over. We talked about it. 26 turnovers in the first game, 17 in the second. And they need to be efficient on offense, move that ball around the defense until they can find an opening, high percentage shot. >> The team's second against the bobcats. Wagner inside to Schaben. Can't get the shot to fall. Schaben going to be called for going over the back. >> Not letting her catch the ball so deep in the paint. >> Harlan's first team foul. Three-point lead for the cyclones. 4:44 to play in the opening quarter. And right away the bobcats go to their bench. Draws contact. >> Good ball fake. In amongst three defenders. She really took it in there. Drew the contact. Went hard to the floor. >> Nine points, 12 rebounds, five blocks against the bombers in the semis. >> Frederick just got a steal right there. Now a foul called against western Dubuque. >> Second season for Harlan in back-to-back championship game appearances. Back to the athletic director at Harlan, Mitch Osborne, will have his team here in Des Moines next week as the top seed in 3a. Zack of course played under Mitch at Pomeroy palmer. Must have had a pretty good connection there. Of course western Dubuque, they've got a history with their head coaches, Amy ostWinkle. >> Also known as Amy Hellie. >> The fouls are starting to mount in this one. >> It looks like right now western Dubuque very intent in trying to get the ball inside. Seeing if they can get some foul trouble, get a little bit of that height out of the line-up for Harlan. >> Frederick picks up the foul. That's her first. Moss takes the free throw and an opportunity to tie it up at 7. Don't expect to see a lot of perimeter shots in this one too as well. Each team likes to go inside. >> They have the personnel to do it. Both these teams have a very good inside presence. Why not start there and establish that early on in the game and then see what happens and see how you can adjust your game plan? >> Harlan with the one-point lead. That's Moser. The freshman will slow it down. Now to the side. Drills the three. >> All set up by the steal. The freshman, who really didn't play varsity until late January, read that perfectly to get the steal and get that started. >> Another turnover by Harlan. That'll be their third. >> That'll be the fourth turnover on western Dubuque. >> Good look at the ball movement around the outside of the defense. And Harlan was not able to adjust to get out and challenge the three-point shots. >> There's a reason why Western Dubuque has rattled off a school-record, we mentioned 23 wins, but they had a hot streak through much of the season where they registered 15 straight wins, which was also a school record. Now a foul here called underneath. Speaking of hot streaks, that on Harlan. 25-0 on this one, which also sets a school record. >> Both of these teams played at a high level all season long. That's why they're here vying for the state title. >> Wagner in to Schaben. Inside of 3:00 to play. Goes up high. And uses her 6'2" frame to put it through. Tied at 9 here. >> I said it before. One of the things she does so well is keep that ball above her head. A lot of times the center will bring the ball around her waist, allow the defense to come and strip the ball or tie them up. >> Taylor leinen one of the seniors on the squad. Western Dubuque and Harlan shooting lights out. 80% from the floor for western Dubuque. 67 for Harlan. >> No nerves at all. >> Charge called for Taylor Wagner. That will be her second. And the bobcats of Western Dubuque have a three-point edge here. >> Wagner their floor general and she's able to create off the dribble either for herself or getting her teammates involved. That time got a little too aggressive and picked up the charge. >> Hannah havick into the game. 5'5" senior. Inside here's moss trying to work it in on Schaben. >> Taylor Wagner going to the line to shoot two with 1:40 in the opening quarter. >> They put the ball on the floor, go right at Simon-ressler. >> Wagner able to hit the free throw. And now Harlan will have three seniors out on the floor. In Ana Petersen, Taylor linen, and Hannah Havick. >> They do have nice balance. They have starters that are underclassmen but they can bring in the seniors. So you have some experience coming in off the bench. >> Jordyn Moser in for Wagner, who will sit with those two fouls now. Tied at 11. And each team shooting lights out here. >> Simon-ressler rises up and knocks one down. >> Just kind of that spot shooter. They give her the ball and she sizes it up. Rotating out to get a hand in the face. And she's just firing away. >> Simon-ressler with six. Scored 21 points in the victory in the quarterfinals against Elam. And this one will stay with Harlan. As passing has been the key for the bobcats here at the tourney. >> Dribble penetration and just gave her enough room. They did come out on her but just gave her enough room to be able to shoot the ball. >> Ana Petersen will check into the scoring column. Harlan ties it up again at 13 apiece. From the corner. Schaben will clear the boards. >> When you get ahead of that first wave of the pressure, you do have numbers and you have to push tempo, and that's what they did. Now Harlan I think is going to hold for the last shot. >> Western Dubuque. Tied at 13 here. Coming up in a few moments we'll see how these two teams got to the championship as we'll go through the journey to the championship. Paul Yeager's standing by here as this one going to be held for the last shot. Western Dubuque has had every game in their postseason run even in the regions come down to a possession. So they're used to having something strung out here. >> They know how to handle the ten seconds on the clock. They're making their move. Simon-ressler will dribble out the clock. We've played one quarter in the 4a championship. We're going to start where we started when we return for the second tied up at 13. Let's go to Paul Yeager, who's standing by with a journey to the championship. >> You have a low-scoring game and a wild game. That's how these two teams got here. But let's show you those highlights again. We showed them to you in the pregame. But now let's give you a little refresher course. Harlan played. The story in the tournament. Carlyle. They have one win coming in. Only one win last year. Here they are playing a game for state. Inside early. It was Mary grace watchel for Carlyle. Taylor Wagner for three. Carlisle. Watchel takes the dribble. Harlan determined to run the table. And so far that's possible. They win 45-42. The other semifinal game was the nightcap. Of Thursday night. Western Dubuque and Ballard. Great hustle and great defense. Lembezeder to Megan moss for the two. And the pass inside again to moss from Armstrong. Western Dubuque advances. 30-22. Let's go back to the second quarter action down inside at the court. >> We've got a foul here called underneath. This one going against Harlan. Picking up the foul is Ana Petersen. That'll be her first. The fouls starting to mount for both these squads. The second quarter. The jumper goes through for McKayla Armstrong. >> Wide open at the free-throw line. >> Harlan now with their sixth turnover. There's Amy oft Winkle we saw just a moment ago. She likes to use line changes, bringing two, sometimes three, and even four players into the ball game. Picked that up from her former head coach at U.N.I., Tony di cecco. Got to have a Tony D. Reference in the state championship. >> Great coach. Really got that U.N.I. program rolling again. And they're still rolling. But he was a big part of that resurgence up there at northern Iowa. >> Doee weber into the contest. Bobcats trying to bring some hardware home for the first time since 1987. That was the first five player championship. Moss from behind has it stripped by Schaben. And this one will stay with western Dubuque. >> The blocks from behind. Kloewer gets the clone block, but western Dubuque keeps the possession. >> Kloewer will pick it up. To the rack. >> Able to pick up the loose ball. Nobody out in front of her. For the easy layup. >> Seen a lot of lead changes. Some ties in this one. Here's weber. >> I tell you what. Both teams are hustling. And they get a time out. Simon-Ressler went to grab the loose ball and smartly called a time out. >> She was looking at the official saying -- >> Help me out. >> Help me out. >> I'm trying to call a time out. Give me it. >> Western Dubuque gets a time out. We want to tell you about the ingredients, the passionate chefs who grow them and season 3 of Iowa ingredients premieres on April 4th. Quick time out there. Tied up at 15. 6:24 to go in the first half. Checking back into the game is Clark. >> Going straight up on Simon-Ressler. >> Travel called on moss. Who has the upside in the tempo department? >> That's a great question. I don't know. I think both of these teams are trying to figure out where they can get the upper hand and get the momentum on their side. Neither team has been able to control the tempo. >> The possession arrow, we'll keep it with Harlan. >> Look for a little lob inside to Schaben, maybe. >> There's Wagner. She'll do that. Schaben now with her sixth point of the game. And a foul called and backward against Jordan Moser. That'll be the team's seventh -- or make it their sixth. >> Starting to get a little aggressive. Little things like that can maybe shift the momentum. So you try to gamble a little bit to see if you can make a play. >> The turnovers have been mounting for both. The field goal percentages remain high. They just haven't been able to get many shots off. Simon-Ressler guarded by Kloewer. Now to moss. Good move to the inside. The spin with the right hand. >> They came down to double-team, and then a third player came as well. The triple-team. She was able to step through that. And Schaben with the nice move to the hoop. >> Gets the answer back on the other end. And this one -- officials are going to talk it over. And it will be Harlan basketball here. >> This has been a game we talked about nobody's taking control of this game. Getting on the floor for loose balls. Battling underneath for rebounds. >> Here's Frederick. Trying to get it to fall. And the rebound comes down to western Dubuque. Matty Clark at the point. >> Again, another opportunity. >> Another offensive rebound for the bobcats. Now from the top the three. In and out. For Lembezeder. And the cyclones control the basketball. And the two-point leader at 19-17. Kloewer goes back inside to Schaben. Her tenth point of the night. >> You've got to get some back side hope. They're doing a great job. They're fronting her and she's able to haul it in and the defense didn't come over to get on the back side. >> Matty Clark, her second triple of the ball game. Their best three-point shooter in Matty Clark, the junior. Harlan lead down to one. >> They had the high-low that time with Frederick and Schaben but they didn't give her the ball. >> Frederick repositioned herself into the low block. >> Steal by Harlan. They'll try to take it out ahead. Simon-Ressler will track it down. Good hustle that time by the junior. Here's moss spotting up. From 17. And western Dubuque pulls a little closer. Harlan wants to run a little bit. Here come the bobcats. >> Every time they get a little bit of a lead, western Dubuque comes right back. >> Schaben will go to the line. A foul on Moss. >> Megan Moss coming into the tournament 0 of 1 from three-point range. >> You know, when we talked to Amy ostWinkle, the head coach of western Dubuque, she said they will put her out on the perimeter. >> And she obviously has that range. She knocked that one down, had great form and nothing but net. But only one attempt on the season coming into the tournament. But knowing that she's a threat and that she does have that kind of range, she knocks one down. That's going to change your thinking a little bit defensively. >> Bobcats go to their bench. Checking in is Jessica. >> She's a leader on the floor. Sometimes a quiet leader. But will speak up when she needs, to when she thinks her team needs to hear. >> Schaben with another rebound. A foul called against western Dubuque. A hard punishment for the crime for Armstrong as they gets to the top. >> Trying to stay in the passing lane to see if she can get a quick steal. Right there you're right. She just got one right to the jaw. >> Taylor Wagner to the line. Had a team-high 14 points the other night against Carlisle. 51% on the season. Can't get that one to fall and a foul on the rebound on Frederick. Will pick up the second. And we'll WUM down to the other end. Two great communities. This is really breaking out in the first half. >> It's a physical game. It has been physical from the opening tip. And that's why we're seeing these teams go to the free-throw line. >> You don't get a small trophy. You get a big trophy when you win it. >> That's why you need to concentrate when you do get to the line. >> 2:5520 play. Harlan with a one-point lead. Simon-Ressler at the TLIEN try to tie it. And she does. And Harlan will turn it right back over. We've got a tie game. And the bobcats trying to get another lead here. As this one has swiveled back and forth. It will stay with the bobcats. >> You really have to be on your toads. You have to step to the ball. You have to be good with your passes. And both of these teams defensively may be gambling a little bit. You have to throw in your ball fake every now and again. >> Another turnover by Harlan. The team model for western Dubuque is to be unselfish and balanced. Just those two words. Unselfish and balanced. >> You can see with the passing and extra passes that they make on offense and looking to get their teammates open. >> A lot of turnovers in this one. >> 2:30 to play here in the first half. All knotted up at 24. And it will stay with Harlan. Harlan shot just 35% in that victory from the field against Carlisle. Here tonight a little bit better of a clip. But again, the possession. No one has really cradled them. >> The long arms of Schaben. >> Third opportunity. Go to Schaben on the block and she'll bang it home for two. Schaben racking them up in the first half to the Harlan cyclones. >> Season high is 22 points. The freshman able to knock down the three. And western Dubuque with another lead here. >> That will send Schaben to the line. And western Dubuque back to their bench. Molly Lembezeder will check back in. Schaben an Iowa state volleyball recruit. Just a junior. But declared early that she warranted to play for Christie Johnson Lynch, who's having quite a state basketball tournament with the recruits that she's brought in. >> You think coach Afghanly might be knocking on that coach's door and saying you know what, can we split them, can we have them for both seasons? >> All-tournament team player. The captain, Alexis Conaway. 28-27. Harlan with the one-point lead and the ball here. And a time out going to be taken here by Zack lawson and Harlan. Well, the Harlan cyclones, we mentioned, have had -- they want to get their first ever state championship as they're trying to battle their way through here in the first half. One-point lead. Let's look in on head coach Zack clausen in the huddle. >> Set that second screen. Don't force the ball inside. We're going to go at eight seconds. Don't foul. Don't get over the back. Nothing like that. Let's finish strong. Team, one, two, three. >> Harlan, who was the runner-up in 1995 and last year against Xavier lost by a point in a very thrilling finish here in the 4a final. >> They had three performers who stepped up big in that ball game. Wagner 16 points, Schaben 13 points. 19 rebounds in that title game a year ago. And four blocked shots. Frederick had 10 points and 9 rebounds. >> Harlan looking to hold for one here. >> Sorry. You heard coach clausen say hold until eight seconds. We're going to go at eight. But Western Dubuque coming out and really pressuring. >> Pitching out to Wagner. Who's played really well since picking up those two quick fouls. Trying to avoid the double-team. Wagner driving it and 230U8D. And will go to the line. >> They did exactly what they wanted to do. They started the motion with about ten seconds on the clock. Got the dribble drive. Wagner got inside. Got the contact. >> Wagner able to hit the free throw. Coming up at the half. We have some festivities for you. You don't want to miss. We're going to honor the 1964 team and the hall of fame. Plus the E. Wayne Cooley tribute. We've got first half highlights, analysis, a lot more. That's all coming up at the half. Wagner able to key in the free throw shooter. Harlan with a three-point lead. 30-27. And here comes Western Dubuque at the horn to lob it off. Can't get a shot off. That will be that. Harlan at the halfway point, halfway home to try to get their first ever girls' state basketball championship has a 30-27 lead. As Western Dubuque's team is really battling here. Let's go to Paul Yeager who's standing by. Paul? >> Thank you very much, B.J. And we're going to be joined here in just a moment by the coach of the Western Dubuque bobcats, Amy ostWinkle, and find out what she thinks about this first half. A lot of stuff going on. Coach, it was close, a lot of lead changes. What's going right for you? >> Our defensive pressure is kind of where it needs to be right now. They're getting it in to their bigs, which we kind of need to eliminate. We need to put more defensive pressure on their guards and really extend out more. But just crashing the defensive rebounds and then offensively we're getting some good looks on the inside as well as the outside. >> And Schaben continues to have her points inside. You're going to have to maybe change things up on her? >> Yeah, we're going to have to make sure we have that weak side. I think our posts are doing a great job of covering her on the front. Our weak side isn't there quick enough right now. So we'll just have to make some tweaks in the second half. >> You're having good shots there by Simon-Ressler. She's been big for you. >> She knows what to do when she has the ball in her hands. We just need to have more spacing offensively and keep moving the ball. >> All right, coach. And also, Morgan Pitts also had another couple of big moments for you. >> She did. She's really been stuffing up the last couple games. We need her to step up in the second half and look foreher shot. She can do that. She's quick, she's long, she can get to the bucket. >> Coach, thank you very much. >> Thanks. >> Head coach Amy ostWinkle. Let's take a look back to a team from 50 years ago to west Winona and some of the highlights from when they played this legendary game. >> SCHEEZly to Maccenburg. A beauty. SCHEEZly comes up with it. >> Stolen away by west vinona. There is the ball game. Look at this team out on the floor. >> And the ball game. And look at this team out on the floor. >> West vinona school district was just in its second year as a reorganized school district. In their first season playing together the spartanettes enjoyed a stellar season only to have a heartbreaker to shaler in the postseason. The loss motivated the team to make 1964 their year. Led by no nonsense coach mark Murray who instituted a 9:00 p.m. curfew with no date during the postseason, the spartanette R08D into the state tournament unbeaten and ranked number one in the state. West vinona steamrolled its first three state tournament opponents beating Guthrie center, west Marshall and everly by an average of 24 points. However, the spartanettes met a formidable foe in Southampton in the finals. South Hamilton owned a ten-point lead with four minutes left to play when west Winona rallied. Taking advantage of missed free throw opportunities the spartanettes took the lead with 33 seconds remaining to complete their dramatic comeback. Two free throws later and the spartanettes were the 1964 state championships with a 70-67 victory. Let's welcome this great team back to the state tournament center stage. Presenting this year's honor team, the 1964 west manona spartanettes. Sherry Menckenburg. Carol scheesly groves. Mary cartNell ruble. Regina retino. Diane zima karwer. Pam Beatle Epperson. Jeri Heistercamp. And representing head coach mark Murray, his daughters Jill Houseman and Valerie Payne. Congratulations and welcome back, spartanettes. Iowa has produced some outstanding players in its rich basketball history. Tonight three more of Iowa's all-time greats were honored with induction into the Iowa girls' high school athletic union's basketball hall of fame. Presenting this year's hall of fame awards by the Iowa farm bureau is Craig hill, president of the Iowa farm bureau. Today's first honoree was a three-year starter for Sioux City north from 2003 to 2007, helping the stars reach two state tournaments. A first team starter as a senior she averaged 15.5 points, 5.4 assists, and 3.4 steals in leading north to the class 4-5 state championship. She earned all tournament honors when she managed a 4a best 19.3 points and two steals in tournament play. She went on to enjoy what could be called the finest career in Iowa women's basketball. After earning Missouri's freshman of the year honors she was a three time Missouri valley conference first team all conference performer and led the Panthers to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances. She finished her career as the Panthers' career leader in scoring with 2,081 points, was the career leader in three-point goals made, free throws made, free-throw percentage, assists, and games played, starting all 136 games she played in. She was a two-time Missouri valley conference player of the year and was the Missouri valley conference's scholar athlete of the year in 2013. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Iowa girls' basketball hall of fame. From Sioux City north, Jackie kalen. Jackie is currently playing professional basketball in Israel and is unable to be present to accept her award. Accepting for Jackie tonight is Jackie's high school coach, Kurt walker. Congratulations. Our next hall of famer was known for her sweet stroke in an outstanding career at Mason city and Drake university. Playing for Mason city from 1995 to 1998, she averaged over 20 points per game and was a three-time first-team all state selection. She led the state in free-throw percentage three times and scored 1,826 career points to complement her 735 career rebounds. Her career free-throw percentage of 88% ranks third highest in state history. She went on to become a four-year starter at Drake university. Helping the bulldogs reach the wnit and three NCAA tournaments include a trip to the sweet 16. She averaged over ten points per game in her career at Drake and earned all conference honors three times. When her career was completed at Drake she scored 1,334 career points and was the school's career leader in free-throw percentage at 89.4%. She was also the school's career leader in three-point field goal percentage. She now resides in Charlotte, North Carolina with her husband Brett where she works for federated insurance company. Ladies and gentlemen, let's welcome one of Iowa's finest pure shooters into the Iowa girls' basketball hall of fame. From Mason city, Erin Richards Taylor. Congratulations. Our final inductee is making the hall of fame in her first year of eligibility. Starring at southeastern western grand she did it all. She was inducted into the Iowa girls' softball hall of fame last summer after BHK Iowa's stolen base leader and all-time hit queen. She was also a multiple state champion long jumper. However, she really shined in basketball. She led southeastern Webster grand to a pair of state tournament appearances, earning all-tournament honors in 2008, despite playing just one game. A two-time first team all team selection, she finished her career second in five player history with 2,708 career points. She ranked eighth in Iowa history with 1,184 career rebounds and ranked sixth in state history in career assists. As a senior she averaged 30.5 points, 13.4 rebounds, 8.8 assists, four steals, and 1.6 blocks per game, leading the state in scoring, free throws made and attempted, rebounds and assists. After playing one year at the university of the Pacific, she transferred to grand view university and was a three-time naia all-American. As a senior she was the naia division 2 national player of the year, averaging 23.2 points and 10.6 rebounds while leading the Vikings to the quarterfinals of the naia national tournament. An outstanding student, she was chosen as the college division academic all-American of the year in women's basketball. She now works in the Illinois state athletic department and just finished her second season as coach at Illinois Wesleyan. Last summer she married former grandview baseball player Eric Watson. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Iowa girls' basketball hall of fame, from southeast Webster grand, Jennifer Jorgenson Watson. >> Congratulations to those hall of fame inductees. 2014 marks the first girls' basketball tournament since 1954 that one legendary man is neither running the show nor watching it from retirement. E. Wayne Cooley loomed large over girls' athletics as the director for the state union over half a century. His passing last spring marked the end of an era. Iptv sports sat down with the man who wrought book on Cooley and has the Iowa -- the Iowa boy has unique perspective. Together with Cooley's own words, we look back at the legacy of Iowa's own national leader in women's athletics. >> The first thing I would tell anybody, but especially students today, is that E. Wayne Cooley's one of the most significant persons that ever lived in the history of the state of Iowa. >> In 1954 when I came in think thought to myself, I'm leading an organization, administering the affairs of these girl students, and they're secondary in the minds of the general public. I wanted the girl to walk down the street equally tall with the boy. Maybe no taller but certainly no less tall. And that was the driving force behind my thinking in my administration, was to bring the girl into an equality position with that of the boy. And it came about. It happened. >> He was very forceful in insisting that the girls had equal access to gyms, practice times, all of that. And so he did ruffle feathers. >> In 1954 when I came in I didn't know about title 9. Nobody else did. There was no such thing. But the matter of equality for the girl was uppermost in my mind, and I never lost sight of that. >> The emphasis on women in sports is something new in most parts of the country. But not here in Iowa. The Iowa girls' high school basketball tournament is in its 57th year. >> When the rest of the nation was awaken 25 years ago by title IX federal legislation that mandated equity for girls' and boys' sports programs in our schools, the other states looked around to see that Iowa was already two decades gone down the road toward equity. >> It took someone who understood sports. But that was probably the least important part of it for E. Wayne Cooley. More important was that he understood the culture of Iowa and that he knew of the importance of an equal opportunity in educational activities for girls as well as boys. He understood that and lived that. But then on top of that he was a shrewd business person. I mean, a really smart operator in terms of finances. And the critical piece about what made E. Wayne Cooley so successful is he was just a master showman. I mean, people referred to him as the P.T. barnum of Iowa. He knew how to package and present events that the public would fall all over. >> And tonight the fans in this vast auditorium will be joined by many thousands more watching on a huge television network reaching into nine Midwest stations. >> We will have a state player champion. Down in the crowd it's the Iowa boy. That being chuck offenburger. Chuck, come in please. >> Governor, governor, governor, my goodness, we've got emMettsburg versus polo coming up. >> It's very attractive to see a high school kid come in to vets auditorium over here and be able to score 70 or 80 points. It's a great small town. And then it comes down to the difference is E. Wayne Cooley. It's a sociological thing. It's an Internet thing. It's a cultural thing. >> He resolved he was not going to leave that job until he felt that five-girl game was pretty well established. Because had he just stopped when they ended the six-player tournament, if he'd stopped there would have been concern about whether the girls' union would have survived and how the new tournament was going to work. >> Two seconds. One second. And that'll be the buzzer and the ball game. And a great tournament and a great basketball game. >> I went in, and I just grabbed his hand. I said, well, Wayne, it's check offenburger. And he just kind of squeezed my hand a little bit. I said I just want to tell you that in my career I've been privileged to cover some of the most interesting people of our times and you'd be top three. I just want to thank you for being a good friend, telling you all the stories you told me over the years. But even more than that, I want to thank you for what you did for girls in Iowa because we've got something here no other states have, and it's all because of you, bud. So that's how I said good-bye to him. >> I've always been riding on the girls. She's the one that's carried me along. And made it look successful because it's been fairly successful, some of these factors have been created. And I am duly appreciative. Some of these things will last beyond whatever years I have left. They'll continue on. >> And another one of those traditions is the tuxedo sweep. And tonight no different. The floor is clean and they're ready for half number two. But let's take a look. As you can see, the gentleman from valley south woods high school in west Des Moines. Let's take a look at those first half highlights. We had a good one. We still have a good one. Between 23-2 Western Dubuque and 25-0 Harlan. Inside it goes to Taylor Frederick for the inside bunny. Western Dubuque comes back. They kick it to the right side for Simon-Ressler. That's a pretty-looking shot. Again RESsler gets the basketball. That's a spot-up j. Tied at 13 when they started quickly inside. To Jess Schaben. She had a nice move there. They go back inside to Taylor Frederick. Turnaround shot is good. Two very good post players for Harlan continuing. Western Dubuque would counter. Three-point shot for Morgan Fitch. 27-26. And we're joined by the two coaches who know these two very well. Brian white from Carlisle and Kelly Anderson of Ballard. Good to see you let's start with you, coach Anderson. Western Dubuque, what are they doing right so far? >> One thing they do very well is play defense. And they're doing a nice job on the bigs from Harlan but they're also shooting from the outside a little bit more tonight. They did some of those. >> Thank you, coach. And coach white, great season for you. Very close. But what's Harlan doing tonight? >> That one-two punch of Schaben and Frederick inside is pretty tough. When you've got shooters on the outside, it makes it really tough on opposing coaches. Let me tell you. But Harlan's for real. >> Coach Brian white from Carlisle, coach Kelly Anderson from Ballard. Next year we'll see you down there, right? >> That's a good plan. >> Let's go down for the second half. B.J. and Laura have it. >> 30-27 our score as we're just about ready to get the third quarter under way. A lot of stats in the first half. You take a look at the field goal numbers, each team shooting the ball remarkably well. Harlan ran it 65 WERS and Western Dubuque at 50. The turnovers have been the story and there is a foul situation developing. >> You look at points off of turnovers. Western Dubuque with eight. Harlan with ten. That's fairly even. But points in the paint, 18 for Harlan. So they're pounding it down low inside to the low blocks. >> Points in the paint the difference. We're going to get the second half under way. Out on the floor here for Western Dubuque. Armstrong, Lembezeder, weber, Simon-Ressler and moss. And for Harlan Schaben, Wagner, Kloewer, and Frederick. 16 minutes. A title at stake. Harlan trying to win their first ever state championship. And for Western Dubuque trying to win their first title since 1987. What a shot there by Zoey weber. Her first bucket of the ball game and she ran it in from her hips. >> She's been playing varsity since she was a freshman. So she's got a lot of experience. Off balance. Got it to go. >> Weber now 1 for 7 from the state tournament. That was a huge bucket as Western Dubuque is within one here. >> Coming out to start this quarter being down at halftime and you get a big pick-me-up kind of shot from your guard. >> And right away Harlan attacks inside to Jess Schaben now with 18 points. >> You could hear the coaches talk about the fact that they were establishing Schaben on the inside. She's for real. And they're getting her the ball. >> Lembezeder on the perimeter finds Moss. Only taken one three-pointer entering the state tournament tonight. She has fired away with five of them. Inside, moss with the rejection. Here's Kloewer. And Western Dubuque up with the ball. Here come the bobcats. >> Picking up where it left off at halftime. It is rugged out there. >> Man-to-man defense for Harlan. And a foul called away from the ball against the cyclones. >> Look at the defense of Moss. Right there. Stays on her tiptoes. Able to get back. >> That foul on Kloewer, that will be her second. Three-point game and trying to tie it up is Clark. In and out. >> Getting a lot of good looks from the perimeter. Just can't get them to fall. >> Foul here called way out front. Lembezeder will pick up her first. >> So much talk about that foul out front. That hand check, that body up. And that's been an emphasis this season to call that. >> Way to bring it out, though, in the championship game. Here's the three by Harlan. They can't get it to fall. The cyclones up with the loose ball. Kloewer tied it up. Possession arrow will keep it with Harlan. >> Again, bodies all over the floor. Everybody fighting for loose balls. A few elbows flying and body flying. So it is pretty tough going down low. >> Kloewer fouled on the play and will go to the line to shoot two. Harlan's game. 0 for 4 tonight. They've led the class 4a field shooting 45% from downtown. 14 threes entering this game. But really rising to the occasion in that category. They've hit three of them. As Kloewer SINKDS the free throw and builds the four-point lead here. Kloewer now with four in the game. >> All about balance. You want to have a nice balance of inside-outside. Not necessarily outside meaning a three-point shot. You do want to have those two-point shots on the perimeter as well. >> Bobcats being very patient. Trying to find Simon-Ressler. She'll drive it here with weber, who will get it knocked away by Schaben. >> Simon-Ressler face guarding her down in the post. Out on the perimeter. >> Here's the swat. >> Blocks at both ends. Schaben averages a little over five rebounds -- or excuse me, five blocks a game. >> Here's Simon-Ressler. This time takes it right out to Schaben and gets the deuce. Three-point game. >> Almost got another block there but able to maneuver around her to get it off the glass. >> Kloewer goes inside to Schaben and it will be pushed out of the way. It will be ruled on the floor. As Harlan had the mismatch down low with weber and Schaben. >> Zoey at the front position on Schaben just trying to black her down. Waiting for some back side help. That's a lob pass. And they got weber in front. >> Time out taken by Western Dubuque as coach Amy Ostwinkle wants to talk it over. Three-point game in the third quarter. One thing we've seen out of Western Dubuque just looking through the stat sheet is they've had a big junior varsity move up during the regular season in January. Let's take a look at the bench with the bobcats. >> Use your quickness to get around her. Extend it out. >> Three-point game. Ostwinkle. Had her playing career at McCokina valley, assistant at cascade before become head coach at Western Dubuque and when she talked about that big jv move-up that established a lot of player confidence as they rotated some new faces out on the floor. Frederick has it stolen away by weber, and now a foul. >> See the ball down low, she makes her move. Looks like all ball. Harlan has the ball. Picked up against RESler. Weber comes up with the loose ball for the bobcats. >> You can see Simon-Ressler flashing to the high post. That's where they want her to try to get the ball. You heard coach Ostwinkle talk about that. Flash into the high post area. >> She does. And she draws contact. And that'll be the third personal foul here against Taylor Wagner. The second against Harlan here in the late half. And out she goes and comes in as Hanna Havick. The 5'5" senior. Last year she was a starter with Havick, but really a turnaround coming off the bench. And really kind of shows the type of character that she has. >> Yeah, role changed a little bit. Willing to come in off the bench. Still getting some playing time, and a big contributor to this team. So you're right. You have to have a big personality and confidence in yourself when you are moved to the bench from the starting role but you know what your role is, you can contribute at any time. >> Here come the cyclones. Kloewer out ahead. Here's Frederick. Pulls up. This one will stay with Harlan. Last touch by the bobcats. >> Couldn't get it to fall. Three Western Dubuque players fighting for the rebound fell out of bounds. >> Ana Petersen into the game for Harlan. Said she's an all effort player and this might be her moment. In a game earlier this year she went up against three players and got a concussion. As she took a couple of elbows to the head. We'll see what happens. >> Battle tested, that's for sure, both of these teams. >> Last touch by Harlan. The cyclones will turn it over. Turnovers are mounting. Harlan with 12 in the ball game. Western Dubuque with 10. >> They've been able to survive their turnover woes in their first two games. But they kept the number down a little bit in this ball game. But when they've turned it over, Harlan has capitalized. >> Moser running the point for Harlan. Game-winning shot against north Scott earlier in this tournament. She goes inside and how about the high arcer by Ana Petersen? Her fourth point of the game. >> Down low, isolated, was able to get the arch on that shot to get it up over the extended arms of the defense. >> Bobcats in need of a basket here. 3:13 to play in the third. >> Moser will pick up her third. Fourth team foul against Harlan. >> Kind of get the feeling Harlan is used to this kind of a game. They played them close throughout the tournament. And they were in this state title game a year ago in a close battle. They have the experience on their side. >> Taylor Wagner will come back in to spell Moser. >> Ten in the game for the bobcats. >> The defensive adjustment has been pretty good. >> Simon-Ressler inside. Here comes Harlan. Kloewer almost went across the half-court line. Didn't get the ball over. Bobcats wanting to apply some pressure here. They go inside. Three by Havick. >> Insideout basketball. Havick all alone in the corner. >> Harlan's first triple of the ball game and they have their largest lead here at eight. The cyclones are starting to flex their muscles. Simon-Ressler off the mark. And the rebound to Kloewer. >> And you're right. They're starting to turn the tempo up too a little bit. They're seeing if they can run. Don't have the numbers here. So they're going to get set up, two people high on the high post. >> Inside to Schaben. She's got 20 to lead all scorers. It's a ten-point cyclone lead. >> They set up the two players on the elbow. And they get Schaben down to the low block, work the ball around in rhythm and got it off the glass. >> An 11-2 run by Harlan. The cyclones really showing some tenacious d out there. >> Sometimes when you make a big shot, you get the crowd into it, it helps you pick it up on the defensive end. If they're patient here, see if they can go back inside. >> They do to Petersen. Petersen swimming for something. Gets her own rebound. The put-back not there. As the bobcats haul it away. >> She worked so hard to get that ball into possession. Just could not get the ball. >> 53 seconds to play here in the third quarter. Harlan with a ten-point lead. And a full time out will be taken here by Western Dubuque. Despite being a very young team, this team all this week and throughout the postseason hasn't seemed to get rattled. Right now the cage is starting to shake. >> They have really cruised through this tournament. Not really overwhelmed by the size of the floor or the arena. And they've just been very business like. And now all of a sudden things are starting to get a little shaky for them. Good time out to try to rally the troops. >> Let's go inside that cyclone huddle and hear head coach Zack clausen. >> Last middle. Jess, you're right here. Soon as we start sliding up the court, start sliding down the court. Remember the inbounder. The inbounder's always open. We're coming down right now. Tie it. Tie it. Do not force any passing. Team, one, two, three. >> A ten-point lead for Harlan, who won the hawkeye conference convincingly. Sporting a 25-0 record. >> I think they're going to see some pressure. And that's what they were talking about a little bit. Heard him say don't force passes. So you need to know they're going to turn it up a little bit, try to get into the passing lane. You have to value the ball when it's in your hands. >> Harlan going to be very patient with the ball. Starting to put the brakes on offensively with this ten-point lead. And holding for one here at the end of the third quarter. >> They're really making Wagner work up top. >> Havick. Goes out of bounds. Western Dubuque. Harlan will hold on to it. >> Set up nicely for them. 13 seconds left. They can get the ball in and start their motion offense right away. And agai -- >> Jordyn Moser will come back in. >> Trying to match a little height with height on the inside. >> 13.5 to go in the quarter. The quarter has been owned by Harlan. And the bobcats with a near steal. And now a foul as heading to that was Zoey weber. >> Able to be up on their toes defensively. They were being aggressive. They wanted to get that steal. >> With 5:00 to go in the quarter the bobcats have to get going. Harlan will take a ten-point lead. The final eight minutes of play. Wow, these two teams from eastern and western Iowa. But how far do they have to drive to get to Wells Fargo arena? Let's take a look. >> Well, not a bad drive for Harlan just down i-80. 189 miles for western Du Buick. So a little bit of a trek for them. >> But the new highway 20, it's great. >> It makes everything easier. Why, it does. >> A lot easier. Let's go inside the huddle for the bobcats head coach and Amy Ostwinkle. >> You're on that dark spot. So you're going to start inside. It's almost like we're in Denver in our baseline. >> McKayla, you're going to dribble over to this side. Meg is going to set a screen for rose. Meg look to steal. If we have to reverse it you're right into today's -- >> We need to extend the pressure. Really extend the pressure. They rotate. They're going to really look to spread it out. They're going to look to spread it out. >> The bobcats trying to win their first championship since 1987. And by the way, that '87 team who beat number 7 in the nation, members of that team actually visited with this year's prior to the departure down to Des Moines. And now they've got the challenge. A ten-point deficit against the top-ranked team in the state in 4a in Harlan. And the bobcats with the ball first. Here's Simon-Ressler. >> They ran this exactly like coach Ostwinkle drew up. They rotated the ball and got the 1409. >> Zoey Weber with the bucket. Her fourth point of the second half. The lead down to eight. Here's Frederick. Sitting on the bench in foul trouble. Her sixth point of the night. >> That's the name of the game. They're trying to extend the pressure defense so they can't get that easy look inside. >> Headline of the night for Harlan offensively has been Jess Schaben with 20. Moss's three off the mark. Harlan really some big-time separation in that third quarter. Schaben with the block. And it will be picked up by Kloewer. Heads-up basketball there by the cyclones slowing it down. >> You can afford to take some time. >> Moser for three. >> I tell you what, you're hitting the groove at the right time. They're catching fire. Dribble penetration and kick out for the big three. >> They may start celebrating here right now. But Western Dubuque starting to have an answer here. >> They get the big bucket. Now they try to extend the defense. >> And a time out going to be taken here by Harlan. 46-36. And the threes have been falling here. >> You can see dribble penetration. Frederick drives in, draws the defense, able to kick it back out. Getting a good balance. Getting the ball into the low block, high percentage shot down low with the two bigs. But then they're helping out the perimeter by dishing it back out and getting the shots and the looks from three-point range. >> Tenpoints in the game for rose Simon-Ressler for the bobcats. Zoey Weber right now with seven. Western Dubuque needs to find some scoring and some stops at the other end. >> That's the name of the game now with a little over six minutes. You've got to get stops and get efficient on offense. >> Harlan with the ball out of the time out. Their average margin of victory here in the state tournament has only been 2 1/2 points per team. But during the regular season winning their games by nearly 20. Tonight really starting to open it up with their strengths, going inside and being strong. And now the perimeter game starting to get going. Take a look at the three-point numbers. >> You can see that not a lot of them shot here. When they've had the open look, they've been pretty consistent. >> Trying to bring it in is Lembezeder and a foul will be called on Harlan. The bobcats are tentative. The officials are going to talk about this. >> The one side official had travel the other official had the foul and the one that had the foul is going to win that. >> Jess Schaben picks up the foul. That is going to be her first. The fifth team foul on Harlan. >> If you're Western Dubuque you want to be a little more uptempo. Have that sense of urgency to start scoring. >> Simon-Ressler's been quiet here in the fourth. Now to the outside. Weber's shot off the mark. And Schaben will be fouled by Simon-Ressler, for a third. >> That's actually her fourth. >> Yeah, I beg your pardon, her fourth. Sixth team foul here on the bobcats. >> You're going to have to decide at what point in time you bring her back. She's going to have a seat I'm going say for maybe a minute or so, depending on which way this game goes. And they might have to get her back on the floor. >> So Frederick will put it in play. The bobcats starting to crank up the pressure. And they do force a turnover as Harlan falls to the double dribble. >> Wagner couldn't handle that pass. Picked it up. Got called for that double dribble. >> 14 turnovers for Harlan in this title game. A near steal. This one knocked her backwards but it will be tracked down by Lembezeder. Bobcats need to hit the go button inside of five minutes to play. >> Zoey Weber open but they're not looking to her. >> Here's Moss. They'll count it. Going to the line to try to convert the three-point play. >> Dribble drive. Good take right at the high post. Right in. >> That'll be her second. Moss with eight. Make it nine. Make it nine. The bobcats edging a little closer. Still wanting to get stops. >> They've eaten it up a little bit. >> And the foul called at half-court. Harlan at the line. Going there is Wagner. Averaging just over ten points per game. Here tonight, 4 of 5 from the line. On the season just at 51%. And the rebound to the bobcats. Amy Ostwinkle going to go to the percentages to try to get back into this one. >> If she can get results like that, you might see that happen again. >> Tied up. Possession arrow will give it to Harlan. >> Just couldn't get the angle to get the reverse layup. And then there's a scramble for the loose ball and the tie-up. Advantage to Harlan. >> Weber out of the contest. Will pick up the loose ball. Going to be called for a walk prior to taking the shot. >> Saw the defense back. Couldn't decide if she wanted to pull up for the jumper or take it all the way in. Scrambled for that loose ball. They're really battling on defense. They get the turnover right here. She couldn't make that decision. Do I pull up? Do I take it in? >> Let's take a listen inside the huddle of Western Dubuque. >> We're trapping hard right here on the ball. She's stepping into that reversal pass. This guard is too far back. Get away from her and when she dribbles then you can go on the one side. We're only looking for that initial tap before we go back. We've got to work for those traps all the way down the floor. Okay? Look at that back hip just like you did the last time. Let's have the opposite guard step in even more so you take away the reversal pass on the floor. Slide away and take away the reversal. We are baseline. >> Laura, what is she saying? >> She said hustle and get a steal. She said you need to on the inbound -- the inbounder is stepping in and getting the reversal pass. So you need to get off your guard and get over and try to teal that return pass. They're going to trap hard in the corner. And then you have to try to get that reversal past. Let's see if they do it last time out of the time out. They run exactly what she had drawn up. >> Frederick. Will lob it out ahead. Goes to Moser. Moser at the point. >> They're going to spread the floor, work the clock. They want a little motion. Schaben down low. They're not going to try to stick it in there. But now they reverse positions. >> Each team in the single bonus here the rest of the way. Or at least at that point right now. And the bobcats give up Frederick inside. That's a big bucket to move the lead back to nine. >> They didn't switch. They both went over into the corner. That left Frederick open to flash to the hoop. Now to moss, it's a high post. Here's Simon-Ressler. >> They found Simon-Ressler in that short corner. A little high and low action. >> Simon-Ressler leading the way with 14 for Western Dubuque. Had a huge summer with aau. Made a turnaround in her basketball career. Trying to get that done with they are team in the state championship. >> You can see the double-team come and the kickout right there where the defense is a little weak as far as the rotation. They found her open in the short corner. >> Moss goes inside to Weber. She's hammered. >> They've been working that high post. Soon as that ball goes in to moss at the high post she's turning around and looking for somebody to cut to the hoop. Right there at the high post and the nice little step-in by Weber. >> Promptly sinks the free throw. Weber now with eight in the game. >> The captain of this team needs a big free throw here. >> And gets it done. Here come the cyclones out ahead. Schaben, great entry pass there by Moser. Gets the assist. Schaben with 22. >> How about Moser putting her head down and just drives it right through the defense. Schaben steps up nicely. >> Here's Moss getting it done! >> Now they're starting to get aggressive. >> Five-point game two, possessions with 2:20 left to play. Class 4a state championship. >> Telling them to come out and pressure. >> They do commit the foul there. Jordyn Moser will go to the line. I was going to ask you when do you think they might start to foul? This is still a 1-1. They have a couple of more fouls before the double bonus. >> She's played the percentages before. Fouled a little bit early. Might as well put them on the line. See if there's a little pressure. See if they can knock them down. They didn't respond that time. >> Back into the ball game for the bobcats. She'll be running the point. Big moment here for the freshman. And for Western Dubuque, trying to make it a one-possession game. Here's the three. Got it! >> What a huge bucket by Lembezeder. >> The U.N.I. swimming recruit getting it done from the perimeter. It's a two-point game. Pitts will pick up the foul. That's going to be her third. >> Well, they went to the fouling game early on. >> And Western Dubuque with an opportunity to tie it or take the lead. With 1:38 to play. >> A little nerves setting, in a few jitters for Harlan at the free-throw line. >> There's moss at the top. Earlier in the game was taking that shot. >> And I think now they're going to be content to get her set up at the free-throw line and let her distribute the ball. And Harlan fouls Lembezeder, a 73% free throw shooter. That'll put Western Dubuque at the line. And the fourth foul committed by Taylor Wagner. Now 18 fouls against Harlan. Here's Lembezeder. One and one. She did all of her swimming at Dubuque senior. And by the way, she owns numerous state -- or numerous school there at Dubuque senior. Confidence. Getting it done at the line. We're tied at 50. An 11-2 run. Boy howdy, Western Dubuque back into this one big-time. >> Both sides' fans are on their feet for this last 1:23. >> Harlan owned the third quarter. Western Dubuque owns the fourth so far. Time out taken here by Harlan. With 1:14 to play, the cyclones want to talk about it. Let's go to the Harlan head coach, Zack clausen. >> Relax on the free-throw line. Relax and shoot. Don't give them the same look every time. >> I want to run 25. 25. Come in hard. Screen. Set that second screen. Come off the high post. Let's see the third. In the high post. Don't force anything right now. We are in man to man. We need one stop. Team, one, two, three. >> 1:14 to play. Tied up at 50. Harlan has a team philosophy. To prove it they printed it on a T-shirt with one word. "Relentless." >> Well, I'll tell you what. They need to be relentless right now. >> They set the play up. Harlan being led by Jess Schaben, who has a game-high 22. And they go to her on the block and they get the bucket. >> They've got everybody up high. They had Schaben one on one down low. Get her the lob pass. And you knew she was going to be able to reach up and get that. >> Can the Bobcats answer? Inside of a minute to play. Western Dubuque with two time outs remaining. Harlan with just one. Here's Simon-Ressler. Goes inside the lane. Got her shot altered. Will pick up the loose ball and take it to Lembezeder. Lembezeder fouled and will go to the line to try to tie it at 52. >> She calmly stepped there earlier, knocked down a couple. Another two opportunities for her to tie up this ball game. Nice comeback by Western Dubuque. >> Jordyn Moser picked up the foul. And Lembezeder at the line. Moser with four. Wagner with four. And Moss gets the rebound. Will go to the line and shoot two as she's fouled. >> That ball came off just enough for moss to be able to corral it and make that move to the hoop. When that free throw left Lembezeder's hand, it is going to be long. >> Moss hitting the front end of the rim. Trying to pull her team within one here. >> She hits this, you're going to see full court pressure. Going to try to get a steal right away. And if not I think you may have to try to foul if you don't get a -- >> 84% on the year. And she made two key free throws against Carlisle in the semifinals. >> Now, coming into the tournament you said 84%. 26 of 31 at the line. So very solid toeing that line. >> So Harlan has a large lead and it dwindled down to a tie at 50. 13-point lead. Now a full time out taken by Western Dubuque. Right now a two-point game. As the Bobcats want to talk P this one over in the huddle. >> Set the screen. >> They box out on her. 50 will bring the ball. So you're going to have it out. We're going to run flat. You guys really bring that defense low. Whatever side you're opposite of. So if you're -- Meg, you're going to come up, set that high ball screen. Otherwise, Megan on the roll for a three-point try. Recognize what we need, whether it's a three or a two. All right? >> 53-51 Harlan with the advantage. And back at the line after the time out, Elle Kloewer. With five in the contest. >> Three-point ball game. >> Do you foul here? Not let them get off a three-point shot? >> The Bobcats need to be urgent with the basketball. Simon-Ressler. Here's moss for the tie. Can't get it. And Schaben with a rebound. It's loose on the floor. And the cyclones up with it. Wagner fouled on the back side from Weber. 11.4 to play. And Wagner to the line to try to ice it. She'll be there to shoot two. >> Western Dubuque got a good look at it. They got what they wanted. A three-pointer from the top of the key. Just a little too strong. >> I think those relentless T-shirts could be hot sellers soon. >> I think you're right. Wagner calmly steps to the line and makes it a two-possession game. >> And here come the bobcats. Got to hurry. Needs to shoot. Does. And off the mark. Schaben with another rebound. And that will be that. Harlan is your 4a state cheep! [ Cheers and Applause ] It took them four tries, but they get it done. Harlan with their first ever state title. As they win it 55-51. Over Western Dubuque. >> A little redemption after a year ago, getting beat on the last-second shot. Getting back to the title game and winning it. >> And doing it. And this game was -- I mean, all out energy. And effort by both of these two teams. As it comes down to the final minutes here against Harlan. Who led in the ball game by Jess Schaben, who finishes with 24 points. Western Dubuque paced by rose Simon-Ressler and Megan Moss with 12 each. What a final moment in the 4a tilt. Harlan will be your champion at 55-51. >> A serious comeback by Western Dubuque. And Harlan able to withstand it. >> Rose Simon-Ressler! From Harlan, Taylor Wagner! From Ballard, Emily kanitle. From Carlisle Mary grace wachal. From Western Dubuque, Megan Moss. And the captain of the 2014 class 4a all-tournament team, Jess Schaben, Harlan! >> So Harlan wins your championship here today. 55-51 in class 4a. Now it's time for the presentation of the trophy. >> Presenting awards are members of the girls' athletics union board of directors, Greg ebbling, Greg Thomas, Kevin Elwood, and mike horMack. Your class 4a runner-up, the Bobcats from Western Dubuque and coach Amy Ostwinkle! Ladies and gentlemen, our 2014 class 4a state champions, the cyclones from Harlan and coach Zack clausen! We are the champions, my friend And we'll keep on fighting till the end We are the champions >> What a final here in class 4a. Harlan wins it 55-51. As Western Dubuque made a late rally, coming down from 13 down to tie it at 50 only to see Harlan hold them off to win by four. Let's go to Paul Yeager with these game highlights. Paul. >> 2 for 2 on outstanding games here on the final night of basketball in Iowa on the girls' side. Let's take a look at these highlights. Another great one in class 4a. Western Dubuque 23-2 coming in, Harlan 25-0. Inside right away. Taylor Frederick the layup puts up 45R8n. Then rose Simon-Ressler, she had a great game for Dubuque. Simon-Ressler said I can shot it too. At the end of the quarter tied at 13. In the second quarter back inside to Jess Schaben. Nice play over the top of the defense. This time Taylor Frederick, another great post play on the inside. Frederick would finish with eighth. Morgan Fitch gets the friendly roll. 27-26 Western Dubuque. Three-point lead for Harlan at the half as we begin quarter number 3. Nice move into the paint. Simon-Ressler with the shot. And then great inside-out ball movement for Western Dubuque there. Or for Harlan. Hannah Havick. To the fourth quarter now. Megan moss gets it to roll. She finished with 12. Within five at this point. Big shot there Pi Western Dubuque but out of the time out here comes Jess Schaben. She finished with 24 points for the Harlan cyclones. And just like volleyball, NER basketball state champions. 5-51. Let's go to Laura Leonard. >> Coach, congratulations on the victory. Last year you got beat on a last-second shot. Over the top this year. How does it feel? >> It feels amazing. He with played our hearts out last year and we had that feeling in our head all year and in our stomach and we didn't forget about it and we said if we get the opportunity again we're going to seize the moment. And we did today. >> Congratulations, coach. Let's talk to Jess Schaben. Jess, talk a little bit about first of all how it feels to get this title and tell me a little about that out of bounds play when the score was tied, when they got the lob pass to you. >> Oh, the feeling is just unbelievable. And when we were in the out of bounds play, ElLe -- she could tell I was open and went in where it was needed to. >> Talk about how physical it was out there. . >> Right now in the championship it's always going to be tough. They're a very good team. Very physical. >> Congratulations. You're state champs. Back up to Paul. >> Emotions are flowing tonight as Harlan wins the state volleyball tournament.
